M15 and wild conditions

Folks, sorry to prolong this question, but how would a M15 withstand the current weather conditions just mentioned by Mark, 16 miles off the Oregon coast? Thanks, Harry Elmslie

Thanks to all who replied, especially Rick, Steve and Howard. Rowing doesn't seem viable ; and the M15's ability to withstand rough conditions has really not been found??? (taking into account changes suggested by Jerry Montgomery for the San Fran - Hawaii voyage). 14" of white stuff last night in Thunder Bay on L Superior- good for conditioning! (I'm trying to stay positive). Take care, but not too much. Harry Elmslie

I tow an M-15 with a 4 cyl. Outback with no problem. The hitch is good for 3500 lbs. The car is good for 2000 according to the manual. The trailer is rated at 1100 lbs. M15: Rowing

Steve, You make a good point regarding the issue of leverage. With the oarlocks on the coaming I needed 10 ' oars to reach the water and yes I had a minimal amount of leverage, having about 2 1/2' of oar inboard. Cutting holes for oarports seems problematic, but some sort of outrigger arm makes sense to me. I'll give that some thought. From my experience I think that would help a lot. Seated headroom in M15?

With the Porta Poti removed and a couple of throwable floating cushions there is no more comfortable a seat than the one in an M15. There are arm rests and plenty of leg room. I went as far as taking one of the cushions apart, cutting the foam and re-sewing it to fit in the footprint made for the pp. Well my wife did the sewing and the idea of making a seat there was first shown to me by Connie Benneck when he so graciously convince me what a great boat the M15 was. I usually read a bit before going to sleep when cruising and I regularly fall asleep in that seat when doing so. It's not a lot of fun waking up an hour or so later and having to make my bed while cold and half asleep. So throw your porta poti away and build yourself a real throne. Seated headroom in M15?

Anyone know the dimensions from the portable head locker cabin sole to interior roof for the M15? Wondering if a West Marine "Go Anywhere Seat" could be used in the head locker sans porta-potti and v-berth center cushion similar to the arrangement used in Edey & Duff's Stonehorse Cutter The "Go Anywhere Seat" also works well in the cockpit. I have used them in my previous sailboats. In fact, coupled with a folding chair as a cushion, they can be very comfortable. I'm still trying to decide on M15 or M17, new vs. used. I like the interior and cockpit size of the M17, and I remember that some of my most memorable sailing was been in small boats, particularly my CD Typhoon and the family canoe I learned to sail in a few (actually 50 +/-) years ago. I enjoy thin-water sailing and feel like I might actually use the M15 more. Plan on doing a lot of singlehanded sailing, most day, but also hope to trailer sail around the US. M 15 and windy conditions

I would not recommend dropping your sails and motoring in windy conditions. (I guess it depends what the windy conditions are.) I have sailed a M 15 on San Francisco Bay in 25 knots of wind with a storm jib and a double reefed main. She handled just fine. What it's like with winds of 30 knots and above I don't know. Greetings from N. shore of L. Superior: -15F,snow& wind last couple of nights but at least my M15 is safely tucked away in its dome shelter! Bob Eeg's tale of the specially equipped M17 that he constructed for the Austrian man was fascinating and raised a couple of questions about the M15: (1) Has anyone tried rowing one, and if so how was it? and (2) What were the worst conditions a M15 has survived intact (wind, waves) with all sails down and only motor power? Pardon me if these questions have been asked before- I joined just last year. If they have please point me in the right direction and I'll check it out. Thanks and safe sailing to the lucky souls in the south. Harry Elmslie

Gary, I would send you all the good luck I can muster, I think if you check the manufacturer will state it is mandatory to have brakes on a trailer over 2000# but if your boat/trailer/equipment in and on the trailer weigh more than 2400# - Be Careful. Picture this - your vehicle is rated to tow 2400# (no matter brakes - you have them) You come down a steep hill with a stop at the bottom, run the stop wipe out a car (I hope this does not happen!!) the "suits" for the car you hit will note the vehicle was being operated beyond manufacturers recommended ratings and they 'go to towm' at your expense. 1.We want everyone to be safe, 2.We don't want the "suits" to take you to the cleaners. I would weigh your boat and trailer in the configuration you are most likely to be towing it over the road for a trip. Then I would tell some guy on a web- list to 'buzz off'' (me) Good Luck, Take Care, Motor Safe. Gary O.
