I'm reading a lot of ideas on mounting the transducer and forgive me if what I am about to ask is taboo but what about drilling a small hole through the hull to mount it outside and sealing the hole good? I believe there is no such thing as a stupid question, and hope I'm not proven wrong. Mark A. Rick, The temperature was moving around several degrees as I moved around. I don't know how accurate it was, but it did seem to have some sensitivity from the time it was turned on. Norm

Hi Jerry, I was very happy with the short shaft HONDA 2 HP engine, but having said that, let me put in the qualifiers: I used sit on lakes, and mostly when it was calm - i.e., I couldn't sail. The San Francisco Bay sailors may have a different opinion because of the wind against the tide conditions they might face, and the types of waves they see. For calm conditions - motoring home - or getting away from or back to a dock, I found the short shaft HONDA ideal. Additional comments anyone? Chris, A lot us went smaller to the M15 and I for one don't regret it at all. It's a lot of boat and about as manageable for single handling as a sailboat can get. I went through a similar process when choosing the my M15. It was on my short list until Connie showed me his boat and then, well it was all over, I knew it was the boat for me. After two years of ownership I often gloat at what a good decision I made. As to rigging time (my best is 18 minutes) I agree with Connie, Tom and Morris that 20-30 minutes is a reasonable estimate. When I act my age I realise that a quick time will only get me in trouble. Once you learn the system and learn how to put it away when your done your next set-up will be more efficent and pleasant. Hi Norm, Thanks for the pictures. The specs for the Piranha Max 15 states that it comes with a transom mount transducer. Is that the transducer that you mounted to the hull and if so do you get water temperature on your display? And if you get temperature on the display is it water or hull temperature? The reason I ask is that I have this handheld depth/fish/temp unit which needs to be put in the water for a few minutes before it displays the correct water temperature. It seems that the thermo mass of the unit is slow to react to temperature changes. I know you haven't had it long, but what is your impression of the Piranha Max 15? I just installed and successfully tested my Piranha Max 15 dept/fish finder on my M15 #172. I put the transducer in the forward floatation locker and the U-1 battery in the inside starboard storage locker. I made a wooden bracket to hold the depth/fish finder and my GPS. You can see the installation at: http://www.yourcommunityweb.com/monty15/depthfishfinder.htm I found that the temporary silicone bedding for the transducer worked very well. I'm going to leave it as is. Are there any M boaters around the Ventura area? I would like to set up a trip around the islands in the next month or so. Norm Ventura, CA

I keep the main on the boom, and stow the whole thing in the cabin. I keep the motor mounted. So from reaching the parking lot to being ready to launch is 20 minutes, 30 minutes if I have help. Bobbie

Hi Chris, To answer your question about how long it takes to rig an M15, .... that depends.... Are you starting from scratch and have to attach the shrouds to the chain plates? Are you asking just how long it takes to step the mast itself, or totally rigged, boom, sail and all ready for sailing? To make it simple: If you are doing it the first time, with all the problems you will encounter such as twisted halyards, or shrouds hanging up on the mast support as you try and raise the mast. Figure an hour for the first time. The second time, you now know the problems to avoid. The shrouds are still attached to the chain plates, so all you have to do is raise the mast, and hold it in position (using the jib halyard) while you attach the forestay. That's it. It's simple. Half your time will be undoing the lashings / tape around the shrouds and halyards before raising the mast. By the third time I'd say you should be able to do it very easily in about 20 minutes. However, don't forget, raising the mast alone does not rig the boat. You have to hang the rudder You have to put the outboard in it's mount You have to rig your rope traveler for the main sheet .... and when you are launched, then you have to put the boom gooseneck in the mast track, rig the main sheet; put on the main; furl the main and tie it using sail stops; attach the jib hanks, jib halyard, and jib sheets, and then you will be ready to set sail. Doing this all by myself I figure about a good three quarter hour for the first sail of the year, later, I leave the main on the boom and stow it in the cabin - time saved. I have all the halyards on the mast, and the shrouds installed - more time saved in stepping the mast, and to be ready to sail. Stepping the mast alone is only part of the sailing preparation job. I had Umiaq rigged with a few time savers. Everything that could be use a Fastpin (this kind of thing: http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?store Id=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=539) had one -- I remember the forestay had one and there was even a long one that replaced the bolt in the mast step. Everything that could use snap shackles had them (halyards, jib downhaul, mainsheet-traveler). The forestay had a lever-operated tension adjuster on it and, of course, the shrouds stayed attached all the time. Putting the mast up was easy. The hardest job was hauling the motor out of the car, but that was because it was far too big (a 5HP Honda). I'd say that 20-30 minutes is a reasonable goal once you're familiar with everything, but that there will always be something that slows you down! Giles Morris
