Larry has an Idasailor rudder, Randy Graves has one, and I have one that's not yet installed. I'll let those guys speak regarding durability over time and performance, but I'm impressed with the quality of the build. I wasn't aware of a new, lighter version, or if the Montgomery blades can be ordered in a different hdpe material than what I got or not. Ida Sailor rudders

In response to the request for info on Ida sailor rudders I can offer this. Although I just purchased a Monty 23 I still own and race a Santana 23. There is a fleet of four locally here. Three of the four have replaced their rudders with the Ida sailor replacement which is advertised as a superior foil that will increase upwind ability. I am the lone hold out with the stock foam/fiberglass rudder. We had a regatta this weekend in which we had another Santana from Phoenix sail as well. Winds were 10-20 on the first day and 20-25 yesterday. He also was sporting a stock blade. As for the increase in upwind performance? I say bunk. If anything I'd say the stock blades were better. The Phoenix boat and my boat were 1 and 2 to the first mark every time for the 5 races held. I don't know that the Ida sailor blade hurt the other competitors, but there was certainly no advantage that would make me think I'd want to purchase one. However, one disadvantage I have seen is that one of the three Idasailor blades has already broke in half on a heavy wind beat. The factory did honor the warranty on it and sent out a new blade. However this did not make the skippers job any easier as his boat spun out in some pretty gusty conditions. Idasailor claimed that the material used in that particular blade was sub standard and not UV stable causing it to break. This is supposed to be remedied in the new blade. The blade was less than 6 months old. The other two blades are still doing OK. Personaly, I'm just not sold on the product claims or its durability.

Rick Awesome. I'm so glad you picked her up and were willing to put in the effort to save her. My wife and I flew to San Francisco in July or August this year just to look at her. She was in rough shape. The owner wanted $15,000 for her as she sat. He had told me that she was in great shape prior to our trip, so I was a little disapointed. When I told him that I didn't agree with his valuation he said that he was goning to have a lot of work done to the boat and then I would agree that she was worth $15,000. I offered him $7500 on the spot as she sat. My conditions were that he do nothing to her 'cause I wanted to do the work and have control of the quality of work that was done. We couldn't come to an agreement so we went home to AZ and waited. About three weeks later I got an email from him telling me how great the boat looked and that now it was definitely a $15,000 boat. You can imagine my heartbreak when I saw the "paint" job. By that time we had located another 23 in Bokeelia Florida which we purchased with the agreement that we couldn't take delivery until Nov 15th. 3 months,two hurricanes (one almost a direct hit on the boat) , one brand new trailer, and 5200 miles of driving we have her here and are starting work on her. I saw the price on Tonina begin to drop and hoped that someone just like you would get her rather than someone shopping for a bargain basement priced junker who would just leave her in the state she was. I'm stoked. Glad you stripped all that paint. Had to be a thankless job although I gather there wasn't much prep work so maybe it didn't stick all that well anyways! Hope not! Hi Joe, A test ride in any Montgomery is often hard to come by. I'm in Pacifica and recently sold my M-17 which will be replaced with a "new" M-15 in the Spring. I do know of a couple of other M-15's in our area and I'm fairly sure one of them will see your E-mail in the next few days or so and offer a test sail. However, as you may know, this isn't the time of year in the bay to test any boat. Much to calm. You'll be fortunate to get a spotty 5 to 10 knot day. If you wait until the wind is available (spring), and then do a couple of test sails, the M15 will be your boat. I have researched the small trailerable boat options on the market and have decided an M15 would be my best choice ,but I would like to have a look at the boat and talk to some of the local skippers in the SF Bay area, if any. Please respond if you can assist. Thanks. Joe Steffan

Is Dhana the same boat that was in 'Frisco a few years ago named Sadhana? There can't be that many light blue 23's.HI Listers! Mark, Thank you for posting the info on Dhana, and the kind words. It is nice to hear from people who understand why someone would undertake such a time-consuming and expensive project. It is a labor of love...and a recognition of the honest design and craftsmanship embodied in this vessel. I like you was saddened by the pix on the Internet. The more I looked at those pictures the more I realized that this boat was probably non viable from an economic standpoint and therefor at high risk of simply being allowed to "die". When I contacted the previous owner it was clear that he was leaving S. F. and just wanted to "unload" the boat. Luckily timing and circumstances allowed her "rescue" as you put it so well and perhaps like the Phoenix she will rise from the ashes. Perhaps I should name her that. Anyway it seems that a few people are sufficiently interested in her and her transformation that I'll start posting pix of her progress. Rick

Yea Sean it is Tonina (I didn't know this until I stripped the paint off the transom). What a basket case huh? It would have been wonderful the previous owner had not blasted her with paint. she is now stripped and the port structural problems have been repaired. As I have said before every piece of hardware have been removed, old port lights tossed and holes in the cockpit bulkheads are being repaired. I suppose the reason I was able to get her was the fact the very fact she was is in bad shape. The previous owner was pretty eager by the time I came along. This project is probably a fools errand but I am glad that I could rescue this boat for the future. How big a project is your boat? Any pix yet? etc,ect. Hope to hear from you. Rick PS: Many of you out there may have seen this boat on the Internet. It was the one foolishly blasted with white paint...complete with over spray all over the trailer and anything else nearby. Ha
