IRV, I tell you what... Begin saving your money for that M-15 or M-17 right now today! It seems that those who want something bad enough... actually end up with what they want. I used to have another brand of boat. I was scared it would "turtle" each time I went out in a decent blow. I sold it, went sail-boat-less for quite some time and lo and behold the perfect M-17 came my way. Chance? Maybe... Destiny? Where did I read - you don't pick your boat... it picks you? You want an incredible deal on an M boat? Buy one brand new from Bob, keep it ten years and sell it for all that you paid. Now, that's a bargain! The alternative... Buy a lesser boat. But I can assure you... as my pappy used to say "It's better to want something you don't have - than to have something you don't want." Factually, I've never sailed the Compac Boats. However, I have driven a cement mixer truck. Strange that Concrete is used as ballast. I've help build lots of structures - never used it as ballast. Suppose it's okay. By the way, I'm not specifically being negative towards Compac... I'm just a whole hearted Montgomery convert. Bill M-17 SF Bay

Hi Bill, Let me chime in with my reasons for NOT trailering with a motor attached. 1. Inviting as all get out for any thieves who eye a lovely motor hanging out there with it's tongue panting - Steal Me...........Steal Me, and all they have to do is undo the mounting screws and remove it, or grab their Sazall, and it's gone. $800 or so that disappears off the back of your boat almost instantly. (See story last week on the M-site about being at a lake, and leaving boat and motor there for a launch in the morning, and then finding the motor was sawed off during the night, leaving big hole in transom) 2. Look at the physics of the trailering problem. The motor weighing probably 40 lbs, is hanging on a fixed bracket that is about 10 inches deep. On my M15, trailer wheel location to motor mount distance is about 6 feet = 72 inches. Now add the motor mount distance (10 inches) and you have a total length from bounce source (trailer wheel hitting pot hole) to motor of 82 inches. Now multiply the weight of the motor (40 lbs) x (82 inches) and you wind up with a load of 3280 inch - lbs. - which is a hell of a big hammer - that has to be held by the motor mount bolts and the area of the transom where the bolts are mounted. ...........and subjected to this punishment for (????) trailering miles? Robb Walker in one of his articles in MESSING ABOUT IN BOATS, recounts finding an outboard lying in the road that had broken off the transom, with transom and motor lying in the road. 3. Best practice is to keep motor in car - locked up - and motor weight off the motor mount. That way the motor doesn't suddenly develop "a craving to travel" and disappear, and the transom remains a transom, and not a hole in the boat that you discover when you arrive at the launch ramp. Hi Scott, Thanks for your tale of the orcas............... That must have been quite a sight and experience. Sailing is not just getting from A to B, but is also composed of all the sudden surprises that the sea allows the vigilant to observe. Giant sun fish; porpoises; sharks basking on the surface; and encountering leather turtles, are a few of the memories my family share from our sailing activities. Keep telling us about your Northwest sailing adventures, they are most enjoyable to read. Connie

bunk board carpet replacement

The carpet needs replacing on "Really's" e-z loader trailer. I'm going to be keeping the boat in the water at Coyote Point Harbor for a week. I've never replaced carpeting on a trailer before. Any suggestions or recormmendations? Thank's for your help. Rich Cottrell M15

If the bunks are old, you might want to replace them too. I used the highest quality indoor-outdoor carpet (not like the astro-turf sort of stuff--the kind you might use on a covered deck or patio) I could find. I rented a high quality power stapler to attach. If you aren't changing out the boards, you can simply cut the carpet to size (based on whether you want to just tack along the sides of the bunk, or wrap under for a more finished look) and tack it on. If you're replacing the bunks, it's easier to attach the carpet, but the bunks are sort of a pain. I used hefty c-clamps to hold the bunks in place then drilled the holes for attachment. I countersunk the tops to drop the bolt heads below hull level, and just attached the carpet then slit it to get the bolts in. t Tom Smith and Jane Van Winkle M15--345 Chukar M17--064 Unnamed

Rich, You can buy precut rolls of 'Deluxe Marine Bunk Carpet' at West, or you can do what I did with my Flicka trailer and purchase indoor/outdoor carpet (not the nasty green 'Astroturf' stuff, but rather a nice gray Olefin material) at Home Depot (EPA) for a fraction of the price. Regardless of which you use, make sure to use Monel staples (also available at Home Depot in EPA) for fastening the carpet to the bunks. They stock both Stainless and Monel, but the Monel will last longer. As for the bunk boards, I have been threatening to replace mine with Trex 2x4's. Trex is a plastic-wood composite, and is virtually rot proof and does not absorb water. It does not have the same grain strength as fir (and doesn't span as well), but I suspect that for the likes of the M15, it should work fine. I used it on my Flicka trailer for the keel guides. You can find Trex locally at T&H lumber in RWC, OK Lumber in San Carlos, and Bruce Bauer Lumber in Los Altos/Palo Alto. If you use pressure treated lumber, keep in mind that the chemical injected into the wood is a rot/insect treatment, and not a waterproofing. You will need to seal the treated wood to keep it from drying/splitting/getting soggy. Good luck! Have you thought of using (UHDP) Ultra High Density Polypropylene? I can get it a TAPP Plastics but other outlets, unknown. It has to be thick enough to be able to deeply contersink (5/16" - 3/8") flat stainless screws or bolts. However, I've not looked to see about the backing plate. Funny though... When I frequented the Potter Forum, there was discussion about leaving the motor attached and several people chimmed in to tell horror stories of seperated seams, large cracks, etc. Guess there are more differences than I thought. I read an article in Good Old Boat magazine that stated... It's better to have a smaller engine running at 3/4 throttle that to have a larger enging running at half throttle. Small gas outboard engines are designed to be rev'd a bit and will load up and run hotter at slower speeds. I'd think the 4HP would be just a little small for the 23? Then again if you're not fighting currents, it's probably just right. The current OB on my M-17 is a 2-stroke 6HP. California has most of it's better lakes on a 2-stroke ban, so when I get to lake use, I'll be looking at a 4-stroke to replace the current outboard. I'm just beginning to start a short list on replacements and weight will be one of the deciding factors.
