I just returned from a 3,600 mile trip from Cape Cod to little Rock, Ark. and back with my new to me M-15. The p.o. had it trailered from San Antonio, Tx. to Little Rock Where I took over and dragged it from there back to Hyannis. I made it all the way without trailer lights, couldn't get the damn things to work! Several policemen passed me at night without result! Arrived in Hyannisport to the coldest day of year--- 15 degrees. Looking forward to getting her wet. Hmmm, maybe another 3,000 mile trip so. to Fla.?

Chris, We sail a 1988 M-15, bought her back in 93. We traveled 1, 600 miles each way to pick her up. But I did have a chance to see a new one before buying used. Of the boats we have owned; Laguna 24 & Capri 14.2, she is a fine vessel in every respect. Recently I've had the opportunity to sail with the N.W. Potters group. And had a chance to see close up the P-15 & 19. The Potter owners in our area are a very loyal group. They love their boats almost as much as we love our Monty. However, they are very different boats and appeal to very different sailing mind-set. Considering the price of a new Montgomery 15 and the cost to have it delivered, I would suggest you see one. Bob builds the Monty's in Ontario, CA. There is a major airport in Ontario. Perhaps you could shop an "after the first of the year airfare discount" and fly over and take a look? Even if just for the day. In an hour or so of looking you would be convinced one way or the other (I think you would be convinced to buy) and could make the purchase confidently. Also, perhaps you could check-out the M-17, if there is any question at all that the 15 is the right size for you and your family. New M-15, trailer, motor, with transportation costs is probably around $13,000. $300 in airfare represents a small percentage of your investment. You've probably already seen all the M-15 pictures online. We have our M-15 in the garage and I have a digital camera. If there is anything I can do to help you better understand the 15, please let me know. Odds are you will be happy with the boat but I would find one to look/touch/feel before buying...it will be less effort and hassle to do that compared to selling later because you needed the 17. One positive about buying an "M" boat though...resale seems easy if you do make a mistake. Few folks will drive across country to buy ANY other 15' sailboat...unseen or not. That says a lot for satisfaction.

Hi, Yes, I bought my new M15 sight unseen and had never sailed on one either. At the time I was living in NW GA and could not locate any 15's or 17's close enough to sail on. But like you I had researched them on the web and they got such good reviews and when compared to other similar boats they seemed to come out better. I had the boat delivered to me. Bob kept me informed and sent pictures of the boat all along the building process. There are a few things I would have added if I had been a bit wiser though. For one I would have had a boarding ladder installed as I feel it is a safety factor when sailing single handed. It is near to impossible to install later. Also, get a topping lift added. It makes life simpler. And I think I would have added 12 V. I don't do much after dark sailing but when staying on board it is nice to have more than Coleman lanterns to see by at night. I have not regretted doing it. I love my little M 15! Time for a cool change! Sandra(Seawitch #617)

Hi Chris, I personally think it best to buy after trying. I too followed the P forum and then bought a P-15. The Trailer Sailor Forum was wonderful, boy was I disappointed in the boat. Hi Chris.. As a M-17 owner for many years, I can say that you can't go wrong. I saw many 16-22 ft sailboats before I found my M-17. I had gone to Fla. with a list of boats to check out. When I got to the M-17 and stepped onto her, she barely moved, unlike the others. It was love at first step<GG> She felt like a much larger boat. I can't speak for the M-15...wish that I had one myself (and a M-23!!) I've taken my young grandchildren aboard and had no qualms about it. Something that I can't say about the Precision 18 and Potter 19 that I was on. Stargazer is out of the water for the winter. If you're in the Atlanta area (Lake Lanier) you can at least look at a Montgomery (1979 model) Harvey/ Ga M-17 Stargazer #294

San Juan trip

Hi Bob, I started sailing with the NW Potters after you sold Piccolo. They mentioned that you had sailed with them. Unfortunately, their group seems to be kinda falling apart. They didn't have many trips last year. I sailed with them several times 2 years ago, but the only trip I went on with them last year was the Pend Oreille Lake trip in Idaho. The Montys outnumbered them 5 to 1. Pretty much a reverse of what it used to be. We've developed quite an active group now. Are you shopping for another Monty?
