I also looked at the cost of the lights before deciding to purchase them. I do quite a bit of nightime sailing on the lake and there are quite a few fishing boats around. I thought the $150 + was a fairly cheap price for safety equipment that could well prevent a much more costly accident. Now that I will have more free time to sail - I retire Jan 3 - and plan to do more coastal, and I hope near coastal (Dry Tortugas, Bahamas) sailing, I feel a lot more comfortable with that lighting system. I keep my sailboat at a dock on the lake and use an old car battery charger (fully automatic) so keeping a charge is not a problem. In anticipation of doing some longer sails, I invested in a large capacity deep cycle battery. I have been away from the dock (no recharging) for a week at a time without the battery getting down to 50% charge/discharge. Besides the lights I also have a knot meter, depth guage, VHF radio, cabin lights and a tape player. I sometimes purposely drain the battery to 25% to keep it from building up a "memory". I am now looking into using a solar panel to charge the battery while away from the dock for longer periods of time. John Edwards "Miss T" M17 # 372

In this discussion about lights, I haven't seen any mention about power consumption. I've read a little about the new LED lights coming on the market and they look like they would be worth considering, assuming the price isn't out of reason. For an extended cruise, maintaining battery charge could be critical without a way of recharging. I need to install the entire electrical system on my M17 and I hope to find a way of doing it without being dependent on frequent recharging. Larry Yake M17, #200 Tullamore

Just a small addition to the good information John presented,. Any sailing vessel, regardless of size, in addition to the side and stern lights can carry a red over green all-around lights high on the mast. The rules also allow for any sailing vessel that is less than 7 meters may show only a white light in sufficent time to prevent collision...but I don't really recommend it! I have a tri color masthead Aqua Signal light wihich also has an all around light which I use as an anchor light. I also have the original deck mounted red/green lights, and have added a white light part way up the mast for when motoring. I am going to change the deck lights to a bow mounted re/green light, mainly because when I drop the sail, (i use a downhaul from the cockpit) the sail usually hids the lights. I also upgraded the stern light to an Aqua Signal just for increased visibility. All the lights are the Aqua Signal series 25 navigation lights. John Edwards Miss T M17 # 372

We went ashore frequently for hikes, swims, etc. I too have had larger boats, and I think cruising in an M15 as more akin to backpacking or car camping (more comfortable than backpacking, actually) relative to cruising on a 30 footer, which for all purposes, feels more like camping in an RV. We have been fortunate to have good weather for most of our trips. Continued bad and/or rainy weather would be a challenge on an M15--at least one without a full cockpit enclosure/boom tent. My friend and former M15 owner (now sails a Flicka) made such a cover/tent, and when it rained, we went over to his boat. Four of us were able to take meals comfortably with this arrangement. I developed a number of systems for cooking, fresh water storage, gear storage, head, etc. that made these trips more doable/enjoyable. We were never uncomfortable (again, it did not rain much), and we slept just as well as we did on our bigger boats (the M15 berths are surprisingly long and comfortable. Hello Dave, I've spent about 3 days max with two adults & a dog. The boat is pretty comfortable and if you are skilled at organization on a small boat you will probably enjoy it. M15 Masthead lights

I am thinking of putting masthead running lights on my M15 so that I can be seen better at night among the swells on the way to the Dry Tortugas. In looking at the catalogs there is nothing that jumps out at me. Any thoughts? I currently have no lights or battery.
