There's also the story that Bill and Jimmy originally approached Alan McGee at Creation Records to release "1987", but once they described the JAMMs project to him, he declined, assuming that they were just going out to be arrested - this story is from the "My Magpie Eyes" Creation biography. Imagine the KLF as a Creation band! The story of producing a Whitney album (or at least a single) rings a bell ... maybe something in the sleeve notes collage of "Shag Times"? Anyway, PSB similarities also include their "Go West" (released the same month as "K Cera Cera" in Israel) using the Red Army Choir, and "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You/ Where The Streets Have No Name" complete with sampled crowd noise and a JAMMs-like collision of two songs. I had a feeling I remember reading somewhere way back (late 80s early 90s) that the KLF were approached by the likes of Madonna to produce / remix her stuff...maybe off the back of their treatment of Whitney Joins the JAMS?...or perhaps it was Whitney later on? far too long ago for me to substantiate though. I think that's true. I'm sure the "So Hard"/"It Must Be Obvious" remixes were part of the dark, IGUN side of Bill and Jimmy - possibly ever a try out for some ideas that were planned for "The Black Room" or the later video/movie soundtracks ('Waiting', 'Rites of Mu' etc). The "Policy of Truth" remix seems more like an attempt to prove they can remix with a "pop sheen" - possibly with an eye on other bands asking for a remix (again, I have vague memories of Primal Scream working to work with the KLF - they did, after all, work with the Orb). Also, iirc, the Trancentral Mix of "Policy" only features on the remix CD single - the remix 12" actually features the wrong mix. Is this right? Plus, working with Depeche Mode meant that the KLF were connected to Mute. Didn't Bill say in "45" that if the KLF hadn't had their own label, he would have been more than happen for them to be on Mute (he was, after all, an old friend of label both Daniel Miller)? And of course, the 2K single came out on Mute (via Blast First). KLF imports and remixes

This is something that occurred to me today while watching some old Pet Shop Boys videos ... (one for maybe the older members of the group who were buying KLF records "back in the day"? (1) How did the KLF come to remix "So Hard"/"It Must Be Obvious"? Anyone know? Were they asked by Neil and Chris after hearing the blatant PSB homages on "Kylie Said to Jason", or did the KLF remix "So Hard" first, unofficially, then the PSB heard it, liked it, and put it out? Anyone who how these things work? Were Depeche Mode big KLF fans before the "Policy of Truth" remix??? (2) Why did the KLF plump for EMI to release the "Stadium House" video, when they released "Waiting" themselves on KLF Communications? All their records were released in the UK independently, of course, so why was the video released through a corporation? Also, the KLF have dealt worldwide with so many labels - Rough Trade Europe, Possum, Benelux, Dance Pool, TVT, Wax Trax, Arista, EMI, Blast First etc. etc. - how did they choose which one for which release? Presumably, as owners of the rights to all their own records - with no record company involvement other than themselves - they could have licenced each import record out to a different company, if they'd wanted to. Again, anyone know? (Also, thanks so much for people's generous Ebay bids on my CDs. £90 for the Swiss "Shag Times"! Whew! And good to finally "meet" Lazlo/Ernie as he has one of one my auctions - I feel like I've just been given an MBE!) :-)))

Not sure about that - Bill admits in the sleeve notes of "Indie Top 20 Volume 8" (which features KSTJ) that "we wore our Pet Shop Boys obsession on our sleeves with this track". KSTJ is almost a soundalike to "Left To My Own Devices" (which came out a year earlier, I think) so that comment is certainly true. I've never heard Bill or Jimmy say anything about DM; although I suspect that Jimmy might have been into the Mode more the Bill. As far as money is concerned, of course that's the main objective in some of their extra-curricular work; but there's also some work that (I think) is based on friendship. From the time of the KLF's height there's all of Jimmy's work with Tony Thorpe and Alex Paterson, and Bill remixing the Wild Swans "Melting Blue Delicious" (Paul Simpson was really the only one from the Zoo days that Bill has kept close contact with). Then the KLF came together and worked on some of the production for Wah the Mongrel's album "Infamy!" in 1991. I'm sure, again, that was based on friendship stretching back to the Liverpool punk days, rather than any real desire to make money on the back of two-hit-wonder Pete Wylie. Actually - here's another question: how come the KLF didn't "do" outside production for any LP other than "Infamy"? I believe that the Pet Shop Boys were big KLF fans at the time (if memory serves me correctly, So Hard came out after one or more of the Stadium House Trilogies?). I also seem to remember that it was the Pet Shop Boys who asked the KLF to remix them? Certainly, I remember reading interviews with Neil and Chris at the time that mentioned that the KLF were one of their favourite bands at the time.
