>> Who TF is Lenny Dee? Lenny Dee (or "D") was (is?) a D.J. who used to be quite big on the "Happy Hardcore" scene (which was HUGE in Scotland in the mid-90s). You used to be able to get loads of mix tapes of his from dodgy dance music shops (the same shops that are now, presumably, selling skatepunk bootlegs). By that time (1994) he tastes were all 200 bpm and "I'm getting high/ In the sky/ Let me fly/ Into your eye" lyrics (no, not Oasis). Oh, and he is not in any way related to Wanda Dee, Liasons D, Tenacious D, or even Dundee. His last name was probably "Dick" or something, and he changed it. John PS - Is "Space" unlistenable? I've never thought so - although the first five minutes can cause twitching, if not in the right mood. I also know people who love "Chill Out" and can't stand "Space" - too much like Tangerine Dream, apparently.

He played at one of the seminal energy/sunrise raves (along with Carl Cox, Joey Beltram, Judge Jules) that really put rave on the map in the UK in 1988. For more info see the memoirs of Genesis promoter 'Class of 88'. So you can see he was a obvious choice of musical partner of the KLF. He also did a rather splendid remix IMHO 'of Build A fire' (apart from some of Bill's lyrics beginning to grate). Lenny released a few classic 12"s of dark pre hardcore techno very much in the vein of Beltram's 'Mentasm' and 'Energy Flash' releases. Indeed he was a promoter of nights in New York and was a stalwart of its dance scene along with Beltram and Frankie Bones. Can anyone who uses Windows recommend a good sample player? I'm effectively looking for an AKAI S1000 replacement (although it doesn't have to be able to read AKAI disks). All I really want to be able to do is load some samples (WAVS, AIFFS, etc.) up and play them back using the keyboard (ideally the numeric keypad), possibly being able to loop certain samples. I used to use NoiseTracker when I had my Amiga but I'm damned if I can find anything for the PC. Failing that, I'll write one myself! :-)

And didn't Tony Thorpe have something to do with KLF010R and KLF010RR, too? I always thought he had a hand in "Kylie Said Trance", and all its variants. "WTIL" (KLF4T) is apparently sampled from another (older) track. There is a persistent rumour that it might be "Judas' Death", from one of the many cast recordings of "Jesus Christ Superstar" - although the version I have doesn't sound like KLF4T at all (the tune, however, gets very familiar around the 2mins 30secs mark!) In "45", Bill recounts the recording of "Fuck the Millennium" as follows: "Jimmy is rummaging through his trunk of disks, which contains ever sample we've ever used ... He is looking for a disk that contains the searing synth sound that we used of the original 1988 Pure Trance version of 'What Time is Love?' He can't find it." (p340) I wonder what the original sample was, and where it came from? John

I hope this isn't too obvious, but I would probably try Gemm or Netsounds first. The Sabres of Paradise's "Smokebelch 2" takes its melody from a 1988 acid house track called "Nu Groove (No.33) The True Story of House Music" by L B. Bad (a.k.a. Lamont Booker). Anybody have any ideas where I can find the 12"?

I have been using Soundplant 26.1a (contact soundplant(a)soundplant.org) , it does exactly what you are asking , you can assign a sample to each key on your keyboard , it is , as it goes , very good. Its meant , no more taking my sampler to gigs, I am hoping to one day only take my laptop and guitar to gigs , but that may be some time off.
