[OT] Scooter Strike Again (Weekend)

Hi all, So the latest single by Scooter is out, and I just saw the video. (Don't know if this is the same one Brendan referred to back in December on the list. If it is, then Foxtel in Oz got a very early release.) The song is called "Weekend!" Anyway, the KLF references are: - Subtitled "The Stadium Techno Experience" (but maybe that was just this show's label.) - Starts with opening horns, a la "America: What Time Is Love?" - Video starts with man in robes, a la A:WTIL? - Dancing on a "long boat" (but a small one compared to A:WTIL, which from memory was shot on the largest stage they have at Pinewood Studios.) - Helmeted drummer at back of boat looks similar to Bill and Jimmy in their "bucket helmets" from A:WTIL? - Women in robes, a la all the KLF's videos. Though in the version of the clip I saw had the women at least half-out of their robes most of the time. (I presume there is a censored clip available too.) - Final lines are "Respect to the men in the Ice cream van. Over and out." Now, I know it's very popular on this list to bag out Scooter, but I don't think this is totally deserved. They not trying to be a replacement for the KLF. They're just producing slightly better than average techno dance tracks, that let's face it, sell very well and they're probably doing quite nicely for themselves. They obviously see the KLF as an influence in their past, and they enjoying putting little coded messages in their songs and videos that allude to this. 99% of people on the dance floor today won't get these references, but we do and we enjoy spotting them even if we don't particularly go for their music. Just had this in on the resonance list, Bill will be 'selling work' at the Foundry today to raise funds for Resonance. Don't mind what I said. I misunderstood your description. I do happen to have a scanned image of similar Coca-Cola advertisement. It talks about his trip to New York in 1963, and drinking Coke in a diner. It ends with the same "Bill Drummond, money burner" line. There was at least one Zodiac Mindwarp track that he produced around the late 80's early 90's. It should be in the discography... I think it might have been called "Prime Mover", or something like that. More that there was a continuity being followed - Drummond & Balfe (as Zoo) had released the first ever single by the Wild Swans, and this was their last. The card appeared in late 1997 if memory serves. Still got it somewhere in my collection. Picked it up in an arty bar in Manchester. Think it was Coke's attempt at reaching the gin & tonic drinking people of Middle England. Always wondered why Bill would write a piece for them. Maybe it was an excerpt from one of his other works and they thought they'd cash in on his genius. T

On the subject of the Wild Swans, I once worked with a guy who was a good friend of Paul Simpson's (he apparently lives up here in Scotland somewhere). One day my mate was visiting him, and came down for breakfast and found Bill Drummond sitting in the kitchen, reading the morning paper. Apparently, he was extremely nice, a bit like a "cool bank manager", but was upset that people still remembered him more for the KLF and the Teardrops, etc, rather than for his books and articles. Bill also presented Paul with a set of Kalevala singles during this visit. John Not Scots, just Scottish

Thanks for the link to the Williams Fairey website! On a different subject, a couple of weeks ago I managed to get hold of the "St. Petersburg Mix" of the Wild Swans' "Melting Blue Delicious", which was done by Bill Drummond and Dave Balfe in 1990. Does anyone know of any other remix work Bill did around that time without Jimmy Cauty? Also, why was the Wild Swans single not a KLF remix? Had Bill and Jimmy had a fall out or something?
