Why we are here may be to collect stories and share them with one another. These stories are the content of our lifetime” Some years ago, I discovered the joy of telling personal stories through film, creating a short account of a trip I took to Auschwitz. The trip and the process of writing the film were emotional experiences that would profoundly change the course of my career. I followed that short film with a feature length production, Bringing Home Sardinia, a personal journey back to the Italian Island in the Mediterranean where I had spent 5 months in 1979. In the following years I produced four more feature length films. What I’ve learned is that writing compelling stories is difficult and that if you are producing for a mass audience, creating from the heart can open oneself up to personal attacks and criticism. I have often found that difficult. But more importantly, I am learning that for me it is not just the end product that is important, it is the creative process, the people I meet, and the experience of seeing and experiencing the world. I understand that personal stories can touch peoples lives, and that in a small way they can make the world a better place. What that means is that I must continue to create stories, however flawed and imperfect.
