Description

The Writer Joseph Dispenza has written, “Who we are may be storytellers. Why we are here may be to collect stories and share them with one another. These stories are the content of our lifetime”

Some years ago, I discovered the joy of telling personal stories through film, creating a short account of a trip I took to Auschwitz. The trip and the process of writing the film were emotional experiences that would profoundly change the course of my career. I followed that short film with a feature length production, Bringing Home Sardinia, a personal journey back to the Italian Island in the Mediterranean where I had spent 5 months in 1979. In the following years I produced four more feature length films.

What I’ve learned is that writing compelling stories is difficult and that if you are producing for a mass audience, creating from the heart can open oneself up to personal attacks and criticism. I have often found that difficult. But more importantly, I am learning that for me it is not just the end product that is important, it is the creative process, the people I meet, and the experience of seeing and experiencing the world. I understand that personal stories can touch peoples lives, and that in a small way they can make the world a better place.

What that means is that I must continue to create stories, however flawed and imperfect. I must continue to learn and improve my craft, however difficult, and I must share them for these stories "are the content of my lifetime.”
