I should have my copy of this soon. I think ebook versions are already being distributed. Amazon lists the hardcopy edition for release on January 10, while Barnes & Noble still lists the release date as January 17. However, I pre-ordered with B&N, and a shipping label was generated on December 31. The holiday means that the order won't actually ship out until tomorrow, January 3, but the book should be in my hands by the end of this week. I can hardly wait! In the meantime, you can "look inside" the book on Amazon here<http://www.amazon.com/Path-Coldness-Heart-Dread-Empire/dp/1597803294/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1325528463&sr=1-3#reader_1597803294>and read the first chapter on The Green Man Review here<http://greenmanreview.com/books/glen-cook-a-path-to-coldness-of-heart/> . Happy New Year to the list, and happy reading in 2012!
I bought a copy via Nook yesterday. I can't wait to read it. The blurb looks great and the cover art flows with the re-released Dread Empire titles. I've started An Empire Unacquainted With Defeat, so this one will have to wait a bit longer. It will be a while before I read it - I plan to re-read the existing novels before the new one, getting into the spirit of the books before reading the ending. Richard

Dear Scott, I know. However, rumour has it that Glen Cook has signed a contract for 'Garrett # 14;', I have heard nothing further such as a working title or projected completion date. I know there are many fans of the Dread Empire series, and properly so. However, I have for years found the Garrett, P. I. series unique and fascinating. Though the combination of, well, urban fantasy, more or less, and mode noir is now being used by some other authors, none of them have managed anything to compare with Garrett, P. I. Cook said in one of his online interviews (there's several up on Youtube) that he expected to be done writing Garrett #14 by the end of 2011. Then he would finish up Working the Gods' Mischief in early 2012, before writing the rest of A Pitiless Rain (the next Black Company book, the two short stories published in the last two years are the first two chapters). In a recent anthology of urban fantasy done by George R. R. Martin, starting on page 199, one will find 'The Shadow Thieves,' by Glen Cook. It is Garret, P. I. and is set after Gilded Latten Bones. Strafa is present though only through multiple indirect references The primary female villain is described in terms of her resemblance to Garrett's future grand-mother-in-law, clearly (The) Shadowslinger. Present and active are Garrett, Singe, Penny, The Dead Man, and Scithe with supporting cast. On a reassuring note, Garrett speaks of being engaged, Scithe speaks of Garrett coming down off The Hill to his home on Macunado Street (on which both John Stretch and his hench-rats and the Civil Guard/Committee for Unpublished Security are maintaining an on-going watch, albeit with John Stretch's crew being markedly more efficient)) , and, in addition to the looming threat of the Shadowslinger, Garret also worries about coming up with a dowry and notes his future family-in-laws are driving him crazy... The anthology is called _Down These Strange Streets_ - and the amazon reviews aren't entirely positive. Basically, the common complaint is that each story is set in one of the author's worlds and unless you know that author's world you might have problems following the story. I, on the other hand, see this as a plus. I've been reading Garret since the first book and I don't need a lot of back story explaining the world. The other stories... I might or might not read them, but I'll be able to jump straight into Cook's. Richard
I like the anthologies that run that way. I get the author I like and then get stories I might not have read, possibly leading to new books and series to read. It's not Garrett - but a Dread Empire novel that some of us 24 years for.... 24 years? And I had thought the six years between Dreams of Steel and Bleak Seasons we long ones. To be fair, we weren't actually expecting this book. Hoping for it, but not expecting it. Not after the Dread Empire as a whole sold so badly and the manuscript for _The Wrath of Kings_ was stolen. And back in those days, Cook wrote shorter books. A Path to Coldness of Heart reportedly covered a total of 4 planned novels. You can read more at http://www.strangehorizons.com/2005/20050117/cook-int-a.shtml Richard
I must learn to type faster... You might checkout www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYLcjTE1Bq8 Which (if memory serves) touches on what books he plans to be writing. That's the most recent interview I could ind with him. Richard

My printed copy of the book arrived, I have it here now!!!! This is a day I thought might never arrive, because I've truly been waiting since 1988 to find out how the Dread Empire series ends! I still don't know when the book will be in stores. Hopefully soon, but distribution of An Ill Fate Marshaling seems poor so far, at least in the NYC area. I hope both books get wide distribution, as the cover art should bring in new readers. On Tue, Jan 3, 2012 at 11:58 AM, Matt Cutter <thorr_kan@yahoo.com> wrote:
