Port of Shadows - Spoilers, ho!
Spoiler space for anyone using a preview pane. R e m e m b e r t o p q u o t i n g i s a s i n ! So. I've read Port. I've enjoyed Port. It's good to have Croaker back as narrator. However, I agree it's a bit coarser and the narrative voice seems...off. Part of that can be attributed to the Croaker's memory problems and part of it to the changes in past and present narration. I wish we know who was narrating the Postscript. There are throwaway lines in there that'll cause me fits of trying to figure things out on reread after reread. "...wars among the Taken."? The Taken all fell at the Barrowland! What happened to Two Death?! To Third? Come on, I'm dying here!
All agreed. And where is the Bone Eaters? Wanted to see it integrated into the plot line. Maybe another addition? Upcoming? Probably not. But what the heck. replying below the original, because I hear top-posting is a sin :-) On Tuesday, September 18, 2018, 4:43:00 PM EDT, Matt Cutter via glencook-fans <glencook-fans@mailman.xmission.com> wrote: Spoiler space for anyone using a preview pane. I had a hard taking taking Rain seriously. She was TAKEN (supposedly) they have been categorically described as terrifying and unsettling (even the more recent Taken, Feather and Journey seemed to be creepy in the earlier books despite not moldering in graves) . Rain didn't seem all that scary. Much of this could be explained by Croaker's memory issues - maybe she was terrifying and he "forgot" but the story had a lighthearted quality that I associate with Garrett, not the Black Company. I had trouble caring about the new characters because we know they don't show up in later books - I began assuming they were casualties as soon as they were introduced. I liked the book. I'll likely read it again in a few months to see if anticipation clouded my perception. But it isn't one of my favorite Company novels. mr
Yes I also was confused by his new attitudes towards children and responsibility.
