Matt, thanks for the info! Here's a quote from the introduction on the web site: "When you think of that term, you might initially picture big epic fantasy battles like J.R.R. Tolkien’s Battle of Helm’s Deep or George R. R. Martin’s Battle of Blackwater. And indeed this anthology contains plenty of that: There’s “Bone Eaters,” a new story from one of military fantasy’s masters, Glen Cook, set in his Black Company milieu [...]" A new Black Company story? Cool! I've pre-ordered the book on Amazon. Steve On 12/10/14 2:51 PM, Matt Cutter via glencook-fans wrote:

Is this the third chapter or the fourth? Glen's been releasing the new novel gradually via anthologies, but Tides Elba is the only one I've read. On Dec 12, 2014 1:28 PM, "Steve Chew" <schew@interzone.com> wrote:

I hadn't realized that these were chapters of a larger story. I've only read Shaggy Dog Bridge, I think. Here are the others, from Wikipedia: "Tides Elba"—appeared in the Swords & Dark Magic compilation (June 2010) "Smelling Danger: A Black Company Story"— in the Subterranean Press anthology, Tales of Dark Fantasy 2 (2011). "Shaggy Dog Bridge"---appeared in Fearsome Journeys: The New Solaris Book of Fantasy edited by Jonathan Strahan, published by Solaris (2013) Steve On 12/12/14 1:30 PM, Marc Rikmenspoel wrote:

Hello all, A bit of dreaming here, but if you were producing the "Black Company" story for a TV/cable series, who would you like to see direct and write it? Just curious since the GoT is so big at the moment. Sincerely, Conrad
Black Co wouldn't be the only Cook world to make a great cable series: Garret, Dread, Instrumentalities...before the hurried ending..., Dragon, and Tower of Fear would make me tune in. In answer to your question: Peter Jackson is the obvious choice, but Christopher Nolan, JJ Abrams, and Aaron Sorkin come to mind too, even if they haven't all dabbled in fantasy directly. William Goldman. One of the problems with taking Cook to TV is the grittiness of his work. I'm thinking of the village where Croaker and Raven first meet Darling - the grandmother who died in a vain attempt to shield an infant and the other atrocities - which is a scene that can't be cut as it established that there were lines that even the Black Company wouldn't cross. There are critical scenes similar to that one in most of his work, scenes that wouldn't be welcome on the screen (big or small). Yes, Game of Thrones has sex and violence as did 300, but most audiences shy away from real atrocities. The only way I can see an adaptation working is as an animated one. More as a Clone Wars style CGI than an anime (I can't see Lady with a big mouth and small eyes), voiced by voice actors rather than big named stars. Maybe directed by Peter Jackson or Tim Burton - or at least by someone inspired by their movies. Garret is the only one that I can see as live action, but it would need big $$$ special effects if it used live actors. On the whole it's light enough for mainstream tastes, but many of the non-human characters would need Gollum style special effects. While those effects have really come down in price since Lord of the Rings, they would still add to the budget. As for actors playing the roles, I'm not thinking big names, not even for Garret. I'm thinking relatively newcomers who could grow into the roles as the series progressed. Sigh. What we need is a rich fan boy to fall in love with Cook's writings and finance something. Even if it was just a "available on Youtube/from iTunes" project. Richard
Any fan of Sons of Anarchy would watch that scene with Raven. That show is brutal, and brilliant.
