Hi again, I don't suppose there's any corners or center-mag info hiding in the fractXXX.tga image header? It doesn't look like it, but it never hurts to ask. It's not critical, as I can find other ways to get that info (i.e., from a PAR), but it's be oh-so-handy if I could just read it from the TGA... - Jason -- Cheers from Mr. Tumnus! FOTD -- September 02, 2011 (Rating ?) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image immediately impressed me as a view of a nuclear explosion seen from a distance of a couple miles. Since a nuclear war is the most likely way the world might end, I promptly named the image "Armageddon Aspect". The image is a view of the north edge of the infinitely-divided main spike of the Z^(2.000001)+C Mandeloid as it appears in the East Valley area of a minibrot located around -1.86 on the spike. Some curiously corrupt minibrots lie at the heart of the nuclear explosion. I may check one of these for the next FOTD. Armageddon is the name given to the supposedly soon-to-come ultimate battle between the forces of good, led by God, and the forces of evil, led by the evil one himself. We are assured the forces of good will triumph, but the battle will leave the planet in ruins and the survivors wishing they had believed some of that stuff the fundamentalists tried to tell them. (The full details are in the last book of the bible, but you'll need a program and score card to find your way through the symbolism.) How could I rate an image that pictures the end of the world? I could not. So I gave it a rating of a question mark, which leaves the rating to be decided by the individual viewer. The image calculates in a very brief 27 seconds, a much shorter time than it will take the forces of good to defeat the forces of evil in the big battle. FOTD -- September 01, 2011 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The month of August with its very deep Mandelbrot scenes has ended, and it produced some winners for sure. The end of August does not mean we will never return to the very deep Mandelbrot fractals, but for a change we return today to the regular FOTD routine, and start with a scene in the parent fractal that results when 11 negative parts of Z^(-1.1) are combined with 2 negative parts of Z^(-6) before (1/C) is added on every iteration. The resulting image rates a 6, a notable come-down from the 8's and 9's that prevailed during part of August. But what the heck? Even a rating of a 6 is above average, and the calculation time of 5 minutes means that little time will have been wasted if the image elicits a yawn. The name "Net of Convergence" refers to the basin of attraction surrounding the minibrot at the center of the image. The moth- eaten appearance of the features also reminds me of some type of spider web. FOTD 31-08-11 (First Light From Vega [9.5])

FOTD -- August 31, 2011 (Rating 9.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: ALERT! Do not be concerned when nothing appears at the top of the screen when you start the parameter file. The first 25 lines or so are black. Today's image takes us on one final trip to the tip of the long filament extending north from the large minibrot on the main negative spike of the Mandelbrot set. It shows an area of anti- bifurcation, though the resetting is largely hidden by the black color around the edges of the frame. The name "First Light From Vega" comes from a short story I began about 20 years ago in my writing years, but abandoned when I ran out of inspiration. The name seems rather appropriate for today's image however. The image's rating of a 9-1/2 is the third consecutive rating at this lofty level. We're on some kind of a roll here in fractal land. The calculation time of 25-1/3 minutes is faster than the time of some recent images, though still quite slow by long-term FOTD standards.
