That's a really nice spiral and color mapping, Mike. I usually think most spirals are "ho hum" but this one is great -- probably because it has so many "arms" and such a gentle curve to each arm.. It also responded nicely to the anti-aliasing. Was it 5x5 anti-aliasing? FOTD 10-09-11 (Squarely Rooted [9])

FOTD -- September 10, 2011 (Rating 9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The X-parameter of today's main-spike image is very close to sqrt(2). This is no coincidence. I intentionally set the X-value to sqrt(2) when I chose the parameters. The bailout radius of the image is 2, which cuts off the set at a radius of 1.414... Today's image shows the closest minibrot to this cut-off point that I could find. Today's minibrot is not the actual one closest to the cut-off however. There are an infinity of smaller ones closer than today's. It is simply the closest one that I took the trouble to find. The rating of a 9 appears justified. The coloring alone makes the image worth the brief time required to run the parameter file. Almost all the colors were randomly chosen by the Fractint program, though I did slightly tweak a few registers. The name "Squarely Rooted" refers to the X-value of the image. The calculation time of 8-1/2 minutes is surprisingly fast for an image created with arbitrary precision math. This fractal started with Jim Muth's FOTD for April 28, 1999. I added the central 32 arm interleaved spiral to the image by zooming in on a spiral in the original. I tried many color palettes before settling on this one with the sqrt mapping. It was hard to find a coloring scheme that didn't break up the long arms of the central spiral. If you continue to zoom deeper down the center of the spiral you will see the number of arms repeatedly double until you reach the minibrot at the center. FOTD -- September 07, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the East Valley of the large minibrot on the main stem of its parent Mandeloid. Nothing unusual in that. But in today's case, the Mandeloid is not the classic Mandelbrot set; it is the figure that results when the expression Z^(2.15)+C is iterated 9 levels up the hyperladder. The parent fractal resembles a Mandelbrot set rotated so that its main spike faces northwest instead of west. The southern lobe of its main bay is also grossly swollen, though this peculiarity has no significance in today's image. The shape of the minibrot at the center of the image closely resembles the shape of its parent. The pattern around the minibrot in the image gives the impression it lies close to the cut-off point of its parent. But such is not the case. The scene actually lies quite close to a discontinuity. These breaks sometimes act as cut-off points. The rating of a 7 is FOTD average. The name "Emerald Anxiety" refers to the emerald coloring of the scene. The word 'anxiety' was added for artistic reasons. The calculation time of just over 1-1/2 minutes is pleasantly brief. FOTD -- September 06, 2011 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today, we take a short trip back into the depths of the Mandelbrot set, where we check the tip of a minor filament extending from the northeast lobe of the main bay of the large minibrot on the main spike of the M-set. We find today's scene at a depth of over 10^47, where the filaments have become so numerous that they form a circular pattern that almost appears to be a series of overlapping concentric disks. The name "An Act of Numbers" is true of all fractals, and perhaps true of the sub-atomic realm as well. I'll not speculate on the 'real' physical world, which after all is composed of sub-atomic particles. The rating of an 8 shows that there is much to yet be found in the moderately deep depths of the Mandelbrot set. The calculation time of 7-1/2 minutes is surprisingly fast for an image of such magnitude. FOTD -- September 05, 2011 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: POSSIBLE NEW FORMULA ALERT! I might not have previously posted the Mandel-V-Esc formula, which allows changing of the bailout radius. I'm not sure. Today's rather weird image involves a couple tricks. The image itself is located in the East Valley of the large minibrot at -1.75 on the main spike of the Mandelbrot set. The first trick is rendering the image with the 'outside' set to 'real'. This adds the intricate detail to the scene. The second trick is coloring the image with a random color palette, though I did do a bit of tweaking to tone down the randomness at least a bit. This creates the frantic madhouse effect that inspired the name "Madhouse". The third and greatest trick is setting the bailout radius to the point just before the image gets cut off and goes blank. In today's case this point is 3.079. To see what this does, calculate the image with the real(p3) parameter set to 4, or even better, set it to 100. All these tricks add up to a rating of 7.5, not bad, but far from the super 9.5 images of last month. The calculation time of one minute is unexpectedly brief. Part of the briefness is due to the fact that the points are beyond the bailout radius almost as soon as they get started. The large flat areas also increase speed by making the passes=guessing option more efficient. FOTD 04-09-11 (Tangent to What? [6.5])

FOTD -- September 04, 2011 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "Tangent to What?". The name refers to the 'atan' outside fill that created the slightly unusual pattern surrounding the central minibrot. The word 'slightly' explains the humble rating of a 6-1/2. Had the scene been a bit more unusual, the rating might have been a point or two higher. The image is a scene in the period-15 radical on the southwest shore line of the Z^(1.998)+C Mandeloid as it appears 3 levels up the hyperladder. The parent fractal resembles an everyday Mandelbrot set rotated about 30 degrees CW, so that the negative X-axis passes through the south branch of Seahorse Valley. In these almost-whole-number Mandeloids, most of the action lies along the negative X-axis. But with the MandelbrotBC3 formula, Mandeloids may be rotated so that any desired part is intersected by the X-axis, giving the ability to subject any desired part of the almost-M-set to distortion. The calculation time of just under 6 minutes is too long for comfort. Once again, thank goodness for the web sites. The high temperature of 86F 30C combined with a humidity around 90 percent kept things feeling like the Pacific end of the Panama Canal, which BTW is farther east than the Atlantic end.
