FOTD -- February 06, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a slightly deep scene in the East Valley of a minor minibrot lying in one of the side star-arms of a small period-16 bud on the northwest shore line of the main bay of the Mandelbrot set. Words fail to describe the fractal, which can be truly enjoyed only by the sense of vision. The colors were intensified in a sepatate color manipulation program. Then the intensified colors were recorded in the included parameter file. It works just fine. The result rated a 7. If I had been in a more pleasant mood, I might have rated the image an 8. The name "Extemporaneously-1" is a spur-of-the-moment thing, with no deep hidden meaning. Unfortunately, the image lies deep enough to make arbitrary- precision math necessary, which increases the calculation time to a rather dragging 17-plus minutes. All these images were created with Fractint: http://fusegallerynyc.com/Line/11alexander/alexander.html Some images date as far back as the early 90's. All were recently redone in disk-video mode, 4,320 pixels high, promoted (in Corel PaintShopPro) to 24-bit color, then reduced to 480 pixels high and saved as .jpgs. No other photoshopping was done to these images.

We all wish well for JM and PNL; but remember, microorganisms (like all life and consciousness) are fractal in nature too! So what do you get when two fractals try to "out-fractal" each other?? This storm is gonna be extreme. In Denver we only are getting the tail end of it but it is already way sub-zero with wind, snow and ice. How can people deny Global Cooling? <G> .

FOTD 05-02-11 (On What Y-Axis [5])

FOTD -- February 05, 2011 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a dip into one of the axes of the Mandelbrot set. We've had a lot of these axis-dips lately, but as far as I know, almost all of these dips have been into the X-axis. The reason is that the X-axis is a well-defined line of symmetry, while the Y-axis, the axis of today's dip, is a vague thing, with nothing to point it out amid its chaotic surroundings. The minibrots along the X-axis have an orderly arrangement that makes them quite interesting and artistically rewarding. Mini- brots along the Y-axis do not exist. The Y-axis does pass through some (an infinity) of minibrots, but it does so by acci- dent, and the minibrots can lie in any orientation. Today's minibrot lies not exactly on the Y-axis, merely very close to it, which explains the name "On What Y-Axis?" I could have found a minibrot that is actually intersected by the Y-axis, but I ran out of patience when, what I hope was one final fit of coughing erupted and put me in a cranky mood. If I had found a minibrot that actually intersected the Y-axis however, it would have looked almost like today's. The rating of a 5 is an admission that I could have done better. The calculation time of exactly 6 seconds will pass like an evening in June (in the Northern Hemisphere). The trip to the currently active FOTD web site at: <http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html> will take a somewhat longer time, but it will totally eliminate the small task of running the included parameter file. The cloudy sky in the south gave stark contrast to the clear blue sky in the north here at Fractal Central on Friday, with the dividing line directly overhead. The temperature rose from a daybreak low of 9F -13C to an afternoon high of 30F -1C. Un- fortunately, the clouds in the south blocked most of the sun, driving the fractal cats to their shelf by the heat. They leaped down only to help finish the latest bowl of chicken soup. The forecast is for more snow and ice on Saturday. The rest of the day was spent getting the routine work caught up and pondering a philosophical question raised by FL -- what is wrong with people in the world? FOTD 04-02-11 (Wine From a Stone [8])

FOTD -- February 04, 2011 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Once again up and half about, I find it's time for the next FOTD. Today's image lies in the fantastically complex fractal that results when the formula Z^1.25+C is iterated 2.62 turns up the complex logarithmic hyperspiral. The name "Wine From a Stone" shows my surprise when I found such an attractive scene in such an unlikely parent fractal. The rating of an 8 might be a bit overblown, but after 2 fractal- less days, I was extra well pleased to find such an image so quickly. The calculation time of under 2 minutes is well within reason. The fractal cats displayed a notable lack of interest. Thursday brought brilliant cloudless skies but also a cold temperature around 23F -5C. My day Thursday was spent trying to get caught up in the work. I also noticed that the fractal driveway has frozen into 3 inches of solid ice. I spread salt on it and hoped for the best. But, if a dog plays chess -- but very poorly -- it's still a dog playing chess... My Chrome browser window was updated in blocks as it calculated. I wonder if the code assigns the blocks to different cores on multi-core systems? Fractal fans: There will be no FOTD for Feb 1 because The fractal artist is under the weather. FL is doing her part with the steaming chicken soup. (She sure makes better chicken soup than I do.) The weather is also turning bad here at FC, with heavy snow and ice due on Tuesday and Wednesday. The fractal cats got their share of the chicken soup.
