Problems receiving FOTD

Fellow fractal enthusiasts: I have been subscribed to this list since April 1998 and while I have been a lurker have greatly enjoyed the FOTD (Thanks, Jim). Can anyone please explain why I have received no FOTD since 20 February? I know that there have been some because they have been on Hal Lane's web site (Thanks, Hal). Meanwhile, there have been over a dozen other messages. I use Thunderbird, and have checked my filters. I have also checked that Jim Muth, fractint-bounces(a)mailman.xmission.com <mailto:fractint-bounces@mailman.xmission.com> and fractint(a)mailman.xmission.com <mailto:fractint@mailman.xmission.com> are all in my Address Book and hence white-listed. In addition, my ISP says if it thinks a message is a scam; this hasn't happened. Test FOTD

FOTD -- February 20, 2011 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: An antiquing expedition did happen on Saturday, and it left very little time for a proper fractal search. However, I did manage to find an acceptable image, (rated a 5), in the parent fractal that results when the formula Z^(1.99)+C is iterated just one level up the complex logarithmic hyper-spiral and no function is applied. On its surface, this parent appears to be a normal everyday Mandelbrot set that has been rotated so that its main spike faces northeast instead of west. But problems arise on the negative X-axis, which in today's parent cuts through what is normally the southeast shore line of the main bay. Today's image lies in the mess of discontinuities in this small area. As would be expected, the image consists mostly of discontinui- ties. The name "Out of Order" refers to the fact that it is not normal for the negative X-axis to cut through the southeast shore line of the main bay of the M-set. The calculation time of 3-1/2 minutes may be cut to 2-1/2 minutes by resetting the passes to 'g', but doing so will cause some of the finer detail to be missed. Windows XP does not deliver it, even though it was designed long before XP. It supports more than 64meg of RAM (or is the limit on XMS blocks set at 16meg?) with what it calls SXMS blocks. Curiously, DOS 6.22 delivers XMS 3.01, and so does OpenDOS. There is also a DPMI (DOS Protected Mode Interface) 1.0 specificaion (32bit), and Windows only supports version 0.9, which does not include everything you might want to do with a thirty-two bit API. That looks like planned obsolescence to me. There is a GDI+ environment that runs under Windows, and I had or hav a package that requires it. I think the jee stands for gnome: It is designed to port into X-Windows. Half of the trick of programming for a Graphical Application Programmer's Interface (GAPI) is finding the best documentation for it, whether tutorial or reference manual. If you are lucky, someone figured out what best documentation means and donated it to your local library. Beyond that, there is a Software Development Kit (SDK), and a Device Development Kit (DDK). I think the SDK comes with a lot of commercial compilers. I asked about the DDK for Windows 3.1 in 1993. It was over six hundred dollars. DDKs are the only place I know of where M$ bows to open source. IOW, they provide source code for exemplary device drivers. In the open source world, there is DOSbox, so one might be able to figure out how to patch some code from that into winfract for sound. Then again, if you will do that much, then you might as well patch in the code for making DOS sessions into an AVI, and the bit about recording OPL as a wav file, too. Okay...so now I do not know what I want the fractint team to work on, because DOSbox is basically a DOS extender, and there might be a lot of programs that someone might want to record. I am leaning towards linking to DOSbox on the FracTint web page, and if anyone wants to deliver FRACTINT on disk, DOSbox should be included. Oh, and cwsdpmi, too, because DOSbox does not do DPMI. Heh...just ran MSD under DOSbox. It supports XMS driver version 3.01, whereas cmd.exe only supports 2.77. I said "1:24s at 536,398 kbps". Actually, that is bps. I believe that is about half the bandwidth on DSL, so realtime on DSL, if traffic allows. http://ecn.ab.ca/~brewhaha/finance/Arcade_Sound_Sampler.wmv I am not sure about DSL-light.

An epicycloid is a circle with bumps on it. I rewrote the formula for an epicycloid so that you can enter the number of cusps and the amplitude of each cusp. These values are changeable in parameter p3 with the real(p3) = number of cusps and imag(p3) = cusp amplitude. The number of cusps should be an even number. If you make the cusp amplitude = 0 you get a circle for the curve. If you want to see the details of the code you can examine the parameter file below. If you are looking for a good source of curves to put in the formula you might try the book A Catalog of Special Plane Curves by J. Dennis Lawrence. It has hundreds of curves complete with illustrations and the parametric form that you need for this formula. I did run into a few issues that will limit the curves that you can use here. It appears that the distance calculation removes loops in the curve in addition to turning them inside out. It might be possible to overcome this limitation but it wasn't obvious to me how to do it. To make more interesting images it is usually better to have more overlap between the curves. To get that, you need a place where there are a lot of minbrots that are close together and all at nearly the same depth. One place where this occurs is in the arms of spirals as in the above image. I did a short animation of changing the number of cusps in the epicycloid. There is a Quicktime and a Flash version of the animation. Astroid Mset Part 3

Setting the center of the image, zooming in to the required depth, and tweaking a few parameters generated the above image. You can see the purple asteroid ring has period doubled twice since it has 16 lobes. The astroids are much further from the minibrot in this image than the one in Part 1. I think the shallowest minibrots in the image are located inside the biggest astroids. It doesn't appear that there is a minibrot at the center of any of the spirals although the spiral arms have plenty. The noise in the image is from tiny astroids surrounding an infinite number of unresolved minibrots. The 8 lobe astroid can be found by zooming out to a magnification of 1.2E10 and the 4 lobe is at 3.8E8.
