FOTD and two fractals

Had a bit of trouble with the FOTD 09-04-10 Common-Sense_Cubic. Fractint said it couldn't read the coloring information so I used the classic Fractint "blues" map (which comes with the distribution zip) and it looks great. In other news I may have solved the gif to png conversion problem. I used the brute force method of setting up a Flickr account. Hope it works. Oooo look at that fractal its so bright and shiny. FOTD 29-06-10 (So Bad It's Good [8])

FOTD -- June 30, 2010 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is so bad it's good, and this is what I named it. The image was generated by combining 3 parts of an unlikely Z^(0.03) with one serving of Z^3 and adding straight C. The parent fractal vaguely resembles a Mandelbrot set, but the large negative bud is missing, replaced by an unbroken, curving west shore line of the main bay, while the large north and south buds are grossly distorted. Today's scene is located in a small, out of place valley on the northwest shore line of the main bay. The image is one riotous mass of shapes and colors. Most of it consists of 'inside' stuff that was brought to life by rendering the scene with the inside set to 'fmod'. The image is really total chaos with no organizing theme, but there are so many fractal nooks and crannies to explore that it has kind of a fascinating effect on the viewer. All this fascination earns the image a rating of an 8. Lots of sun, lower humidity and a temperature of 84F 29C made conditions near ideal here at Fractal Central on Monday. The fractal cats actually gave up their sleeping spots on the tile floor and came out to let us know they are still here. My day was near normal; tomorrow looks so slow that FL and I might decide to take the day off. If the next FOTD is late, you will know we did. FOTD 29-06-10 (Forever Nameless [6])

FOTD -- June 29, 2010 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image rates a 6. So far, so good. Its parent fractal is one of the largest I have ever found, needing the maximum possible outzoom before it fits onto the screen. No problem here either. I named the image "Forever Nameless", which is paradoxical because this is actually a name. OK, but fractals are meant to be observed with the eyes, not to be given clever names. Today's image is evaporated. I raised the escape radius to one googol, which caused all the 'outside' parts to vanish, leaving an image consisting totally of 'inside' stuff. This left-over inside stuff was then brought to life by the 'bof61' inside fill. The generating expression combines various negative portions of Z^(-1.2) and Z^(-4.4) then adds (1/C). The calculation time of 54 seconds is quite fast, I admit it. But the image can be seen instantly on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> assuming Paul has already posted it there, that is. Heavy clouds, high humidity and sporadic rain showers spoiled Monday here at Fractal Central. The temperature of 86F 30C felt very sultry -- like an afternoon on the banks of the Panama Canal rather than the Susquehanna River. The fractal cats, who have never been to Panama, spent the day stretched on the cool tile floor. My day was average. FL, who was beginning to worry that it might never rain again, felt much relieved when the showers fell, even though the day's rain amounted to only 1cm. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Fractal Spiral of Spirals

What says fractal more than a spiral of self-similar spiral? Well if I get pedantic "fractal" says "fractal" more than anything else but I'm talking rhetorically here. This post has two graphics, a Fractint compatible gif and an anti-aliased jpg. I used my usual technique to anti-alias. The original 800x600 gif was regenerated to 3200x2400 resized to 800x600 in Gimp 2.6.8 sharpened a bit and saved as a 800x600 low compression jpg. FOTD 28-06-10 (Eructating Julia Set [5])

FOTD -- June 28, 2010 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is one of the laziest in FOTD history. My energy totally wilted in the outside heat on Sunday, so I took up resi- dence in front of the TV and passed the afternoon watching baseball. (The good old Baltimore Orioles are doing abysmally terrible this year!) Despite the laziness attack, I still managed to find a fractal. True, it's only a Julia set of the northeast shore line of the Mandelbrot set, but the image is just unusual enough to earn FOTD status. The way I achieved the effect is obvious enough, as is the cor- responding point of the Mandelbrot set. The rating of a 5 says the image is average. The name "Eructating Julia Set" pretty well describes the image. The calculation time of 4-1/2 minutes is brief enough, though even this brief time may be saved by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> A temperature of 95F 35C made Sunday the hottest day so far this summer here at Fractal Central, with a sky so hazy that it was hard to tell if the sun was shining or not. The fractal cats, who do not care about sun in the summer, claimed the cool tile floor early and stayed there all day. My day was average, while FL busied herself in the garden. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and if it makes no sense, how can it be untrue? You can't keep a good formula down! Today's fractal was generated from Paul Carlson's Zf_ang formula which had been mindlessly mutated by myself. FOTD 27-06-10 (Thoughtful Fractal [7])

FOTD -- June 27, 2010 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: To create the parent of today's image I combined 4 negative parts of Z^(-1.56) with 0.8 negative part of Z^(-3.3) and added (1/C). This parent is little more than a series of 4 large bays stacked one on top of the other, with today's scene located on the southwest shore line of the northernmost bay. I found the image in an unpromising valley that I almost passed by. Luckily, I got a certain 'feeling' before I abandoned the area, and was rewarded by today's image, which IMO rates a solid seven. I named the image "Thoughtful Fractal" in recognition of the second thought I had before turning to some of the other interesting sites in the parent. The calculation time of almost 14 minutes is actually more than the image is worth, but in this case at least patience will be rewarded. If no reward is sought, the pre-calculated image may be viewed in its full clory on the FOTD web site at: <http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/> The temperature reached 86F 30C here at Fractal Central on Saturday, while the humidity was high enough to make things muggy. A few drops of rain tried to get started in the after- noon, but never wet the ground. The fractal cats spent the day sleeping and watching their window TV. My day was uneventful; FL kept busy in her garden. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and things are darkest just before the fractal.
