FOTD -- February 06, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The parent fractal of today's festive cubic image resembles a seven-pointed star with a cubic Mandeloid at its center, the whole thing packed neatly inside a circle. Today's scene is located deep in the southernmost point of the parent's star. I named the image "Cubic Consequences" though I do not speculate on what the consequences might be. The rating of a 7 means that I consider the image to be about the current FOTD average. The calculation time of 11-1/2 minutes is slower than I would have liked, but the small wait is worth the sight of such an unusual cubic minibrot. And even this small wait may be avoided by hurrying to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and staring in awe and wonder at the finished image posted there. The full day of sun here at Fractal Central on Thursday was spoiled by a morning temperature of 9F -13C and a brisk wind that made it feel even colder. FOTD -- February 05, 2009 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The question of fractal reality sometimes arises to puzzle even the most devoted fractal fans, and sooner or later every fractal fan asks himself, "Are fractals real?" To begin, fractals must have some kind of reality. How else could we have pictures and animations of them? But it is obvious that fractals are not made of material. They appear to be more like mathematical abstractions, but abstractions have no shape, so how can fractals be abstractions? Mathematics is basically human thought processes stated in symbolic form, so could fractals be made of thought? Thoughts are usually considered to be less real than objective material objects. This is why we say, "ghosts are not real, they exist only in the mind." But sometimes thoughts can become almost real. In dreams, for instance, thoughts can appear quite as objectively real as any material object. So are fractals made of semi-materialised thought? If fractals are made of thought, we then wonder what thought is made of? A materialist would claim that thought is a by-product of the brain. So if fractals are made of thought, they are therefore created by the neural activity of the brain. But what is neural activity? Cognitive specialists tell us that neural activity consists mainly of electric and chemical interactions between neurons. Now it looks like fractals are made of electro- chemical interactions. I could continue by asking what are the interactions made of, but an endless regression is now becoming apparent. At the same time, an idealist, such as myself, would tell us that with thought we have reached the end of the line. Con- scious thought is the ultimate reality, and it is meaningless to ask what thought is made of. My conclusion is that fractals are made of thought, which can take many forms from total abstrac- tion to a rock-solid impression of objective material reality. Fractals are quite real, in fact they are as real as thought. Now let's end the philosophical fractal digression and say a few words about today's image. I named the image "Venusian Landscape" because something about it reminds me of the first pictures sent back from the surface of Venus. I rated it at an 8 because, unlike the surface of that planet, the image has a rather sunny feeling about it. The parent fractal is a cubic Mandelbrot set surrounded by seven spokes inside a circle that makes the set resemble the hub of a wheel. Today's image is located some distance to the northeast of the cubic Mandeloid. The calculation time of a zippy 1-1/4 minutes should bring happiness to every fractalist. Fractal animation visionaries and enthusiasts: I have always been intrigued by fractals that exhibit extreme sensitivity to small parameter changes ("initial conditions"); as you all know this is one of the general concepts of chaos theory. Many Julias are like that, there are several examples on my site. This one, the "Critical Julia" (FOTD January 26, 2009) is no exception; the frames in this animation differ by only 0.0000001 in the P3 parameter. In all Julia morphs I have done up to now, the images always change (evolve) faster as you move towards the center. There is no way to "equalize" or balance it - the center is always changing too fast or the perimeter regions too slow. This one is the singular exception - the center region appears largely unchanged, or very slow, while most of the action occurs along the edges and perimeter. Why that is I do not know, but it's nice for a change. Another aspect of making animations is you never know exactly how they will turn out until it is finished and you look at it. Sometimes they are better than expected, like the recently posted "Darkness Descends". Sometimes they are not quite as good as the original test frames indicated. This one falls into the latter category, resembling a bad acid hit more than a fractal. But what the hey, it's still cool! I rate it a good 7, corresponding to two stars on my site. The rendering time of 3 days can be avoided by downloading the zipped viddie here: http://www.fractal-animation.net/vid/c_julia_x.zip The weather at fractal animation central has been sunny and mild - typical Colorado, in contrast to the NorthEast getting plastered by ice storms. My work day was better than average; the thrice per year liquid helium fill went without incident, as it fortunately has up till now. But always a day of some apprehension, as any who have witnessed the quenching of a superconducting magnet might testify. The wait for the next AOTD is ......... never can tell! My current CPU consuming project is a dive into the trench (REAL=-0.75 IMAG=0) and it should be done in a month or so. It is an interesting and unexplored region, and again, I don't know how the viddie will look till it's done and 4 months consumed! FOTD -- February 04, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The main F.C. computer developed a problem on Tuesday, and left us using the old backup machine, which has been doing fractal duty for a couple years. The ailing unit is now in the shop, but trying to fix the problem left me with no time to complete the day's fractal. The day's image is actually only half finished. The colors obviously need a lot of work, but I decided to post it anyway. I named the muddy image "Smog". The reason is obvious. I gave it no rating. The calculation time of 8-3/4 minutes is too long for such an image, so I advise taking a trip to view the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Despite a forecast of snow, Tuesday turned into quite a pleasant day here at Fractal Central. The sun shone brightly, while the temperature reached a high of 39F 4C. The fractal cats took full advantage of the warm sun. With the main computer down, my day was very busy. Paddy Duncan wrote Madness is like exam results; the border is defined by social convention such that just the 'right' people are sane. And mimsy were the borogroves. Reality is what is.....sanity is measured by an individual's grasp of reality. Reality defined is what is real, regardless of whether something is known or not. Not knowing (thinking) something doesn't change anything except as pertains to the individual who is ignorant of whatever facet of reality they haven't discovered. Proof in point is mathematics, or better yet for this list, fractals. Fractals always were, but the discovery had to await the developement of computers. Fractals exist, are real and a part of reality. If some bushman in the Kalahari Desert doesn't know about them then his knowledge of/about reality is limited, but this doesn't negate anything, it only places limitations. and the insane are just heretics. I don't think so. Insanity is a measure against an individuals ability to "see" reality. Since we don't know everything reality (understanding) is constantly expanding and unfortunately there are some retards who can't accept this, but acceptance is not the basis for reality. The insane are mentally color-blind. An individual that can not see color(s) or hue(s) is defective......no other way to put it. Still, even so, color exists, and independent of the biological eye, too. IR and UV require special devices to be visible to the human eye, but nontheless are part of the spectrum at opposite ends. FOTD 03-02-09 (Richly Decorated [7])

FOTD -- February 03, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The parent fractal of today's image is the most unusual parent of all time. Its main problem is that it is so small it's invisible at the default opening magnitude. But despite initial appearances, a tiny mandeloid lies at the center of the opening screen, and today's image proves it. When magnified a few hundred times, this mandeloid reveals itself to be splitting apart on its west side. Its Seahorse Valley has broadened into a double wedge, and deep in this wedge today's scene is found. The magnitude of 1.6*(10^12) is deceiving. When the parent fractal was shrunk, the decimal point of the coordinates shifted several places to the left, giving an illusory increase in precision. The rating of a 7 seems fair enough, though if I had had more time to work on the colors, I might have raised the rating to an 8. I'm not quite sure what the name "Richly Decorated" refers to. Most likely it's the areas of chaos. The calculation time of 14 minutes is admittedly slow, but nothing that a SOTA unit cannot handle with ease. (Unless the machine is over-qualified, that is!) FOTD 02-02-09 (Squarely Chaotic [2])

FOTD -- February 02, 2009 (Rating 2) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: All the 'reality' stuff on the Fractint list lately might indicate that the philofractal list may need to be brought to life again. I'm not going to say how I spent the day Sunday, but if I did, it would be no surprise. Due to a total lack of effort, today's image is hardly worth being called a fractal. I rated it at a 2 out of the kindness of my heart. And to make matters even worse, the image takes near 13 minutes to calculate. But it's still an image, and to see what kind of fractal I found with one eye on the TV, run the parameter file and indulge yourself in masochistic disappointment. The name "Squarely Chaotic" means little or nothing. The 13 minutes required to run the parameter file may be avoided by visiting the FOTD web site and viewing the finished image there. The web site may be accessed at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Sunday turned out to be an unexpected gift here at Fractal Central, as total sun and a temperature of 50F 10C combined to make it seem almost like spring, despite the snow still covering the ground. The next FOTD, a better one for sure, will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD -- February 01, 2009 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's FOTD is late because on Saturday FL decided we should go on an antiquing expedition down to Hershey, and I agreed. The day was long, but despite the journey and late return, the hastily found fractal turned out to be an unusually attractive one, (at least in my opinion). The parent fractal is a shapeless thing created by combining various negative portions of Z^(-1.1) and Z^(-5.9). This parent fractal has a very large and prominent 'fan'. Today's image is located on the northwest edge of this fan. I named the image "Ring of Snowflakes" because it reminds me of a snowflake. I rated it at an 8 because I think it's pretty good. And the calculation time of under 2 minutes is brief enough to make running the included parameter file almost fun. Sunny skies and a temperature of 25F -4C made for a chilly midwinter day here at Fractal Central on Saturday. The fractal cats enjoyed the conditions alone. Most of my day was occupied elsewhere. Jim, you posted the following with the fotd 31 Jan 09: Until then, take care, and whatever it is, it's all in the mind. Does this mean if we change our mind(s) we change reality? Do we each have our own "reality" in our thoughts? If so, how then can there be any agreement about anything between two or more individuals about anything, not to even consider the fact that according to your statement, something not in my mind doesn't exist.
