FOTD -- February 13, 2009 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The name of today's image -- Gilded Grandeur -- might be somewhat of an exaggeration, but the image, which comes from the same general part of the same parent fractal as yesterday's image, is at least a slight improvement. The rating of a 6-1/2 includes a 1/2 point golden-parachute bonus for my moderately successful attempts at coloring, though in this case, I have no intention of leaving the world of fractals in the foreseeable future. The calculation time of 2-3/4 minutes will pass like lightning once the image starts to appear. The trip to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> will pass like greased lightning, though I cannot imagine how one might apply axle grease to a bolt of lightning. The temperature of 45F 7C here at Fractal Central on Thursday was fair enough, and the partly cloudy skies were no problem, but the wind, which gusted to 65mph 100kph through the day made walking around every corner a challenge. The fractal cats spent most of the day at their big window, watching the trees thrash about and various objects blow past. When a sudden gust brought a number of trash containers clattering down the middle of the street, the cats ducked for cover, but curiosity soon brought them back to the window. FOTD -- February 12, 2009 (Rating 2.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal is not only 12 hours late, it is hardly worth a mention. But it does exist -- this is an undeniable fact. The image is one that I would normally toss in the fractal waste bin at once, but for some strange reason, I decided to make it the FOTD for February 12. I guess I did it to show the kind of stuff I usually throw out. I named the image "Anything Goes" because I can find nothing in it that might make any kind of a theme. It consists basically of random blotches of uncoordinated shapes and clashing colors. Despite the unimpressive colors I actually dared to give myself a half-point bonus for the coloring, which raises the overall rating to a pathetic 2-1/2. The scene is located in a filament extending from a kind of bud on a kind of minibrot at the edge of the 'fan' in the parent fractal of yesterday's image. The calculation time of 6-1/3 minutes is admittedly slow for such a poor image, but to see what all this negativity is about without waiting for the calculation to finish, go to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> where the finished image will soon be posted for instant relief. We had a little touch of spring here at Fractal Central on Wednesday, with lots of sun and a temperature of 64F 18C. FOTD 11-02-09 (Secluded Shoreline [6])

FOTD -- February 11, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today we are faced with another of my genuine evaporated fractals. An evaporated fractal is exactly what the name implies -- a fractal with a bailout radius so large, (in today's case, one-googol), that the entire fractal has melted away to nothing but trapped 'inside' stuff. The generating formula combines various negative portions of Z^(-1.1) and Z^(-11.1) to create an indescribable parent fractal with the usual prominent 'fan' opening east from the origin. Of course, with a bailout radius of one-googol, the parent fractal is a totally blank screen before the 'bof61' inside fill is applied. When the inside fill is applied however, the parent fractal appears, with today's scene lying in a curving valley at the eastern edge of the 'fan'. I thought of the name "Secluded Shoreline" when I noticed the effect of waves breaking on an idyllic secluded tropic shore. I rated the image at a 6 when I found only slight satisfaction with the coloring. The calculation time of 6 minutes means that little time will have been lost if the finished image fails to please. Tuesday here at Fractal Central was spoiled by clouds and occasional showers. The temperature of 43F 6C was fair enough, but the fractal cats need more than mild temperatures to bring contentment. They displayed their dis-satisfaction by getting into a noisy tussle over a catnip mouse. The work was a little lighter than usual, which, considering the supposed economic meltdown, was not too bad. FOTD 09-02-09 (Siegels on Parade [6])

FOTD -- February 09, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In yesterday's discussion I mentioned Siegel Disks. Actually, I'm not sure of the significance of Siegel Disks. The math encyclopedia defines the Siegel Disk Fractal as a Julia set (of the Mandelbrot set) with c=-0.390541,-0.586788i. But why this particular fractal is special is a mystery. I can see nothing unusual or unique about it. The corresponding point of the Mandelbrot set lies exactly on the boundary of the main bay, but other points on the boundary give similar fractals. The answer must lie somewhere in one of the fractal books I have not yet come upon. Today's image is an extension of the Siegel Disk idea, a Julia set of a point on the boundary of the Z^6+C Mandeloid. It is filled with things that closely resemble Z^2+C Siegel Disks, with six large disks and an infinity of smaller ones, their position made obvious by the coloring. The fractal is rather attractive, though its familiarity prevents it from earning a rating above a 6. I named the image "Siegels on Parade", and why not? After all, a parade with an infinity of marching Siegel Disks would take forever to pass the reviewing stand. Luckily, the march is only symbolic, and the fractal takes only 3-3/4 minutes to calculate. And even better, the already-calculated image is or soon will be posted on the FOTD web site for immediate and intense gratifica- tion. FOTD -- February 10, 2009 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal is a surprisingly varied scene in a Z^100+C Julia set. The Mandelbrot set of this formula is basically a circle of radius-one centered at the origin, with 99 tiny bays around its perimeter. The Mandelbrot point of today's Julia image is at an angle of 45 degrees from the origin, at a distance of a tiny bit more than 1, which puts it in the narrow strip of action along the edge of the circle. As is the case with many Julia fractals, a bit of tweaking will show that the image is extremely sensitive to the slightest change in the parameters. The name "High-Order Chaos" is a brief description of the image. The rating of a 5 means that I had no chance to work up a better color palette. The colors in the image are adequate, but could be far better. . Re: Internet problem. I dont know about you, but I do not leave my connection on all the time. I use the hardware switch on the cable modem and only turn it on when I am going on line. Usually it is instant, but sometimes it takes a few seconds to "connect". During this time, if I try to access a web page, I get the same error (obviously). The only way I know is a little icon in the tray which animates while connecting. Just waiting for the connection to establish and reloading the page is then ok. Also - about the image. The black lake in the middle has horizontal lines. I noticed something like this this years ago during some of my exotic julia zooms and morphs, thought it was a genuine part of the fractal and it looked cool (like "eye of hell #2 viddie). Turns out it was a software "issue" in fractint, or thats what some people in this forum said. Is that the case here or not? Any rate it is an interesting image, I may try to animate it. Hopefully will be better than the last one <g>. Stay Amazed JoTz .

FOTD 08-02-09 (Starry Seven [7.5])

FOTD -- February 08, 2009 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: To celebrate the warmest day in several months, FL and I took a trip into the surrounding country on Saturday. Perhaps not by chance, we came upon an antique emporium we had not yet visited. Luckily, the place was small and we made it back to F.C. well before nightfall, which left ample time for my fractal ambitions. The image shows an order-8 minibrot on the northwest shore line of a monumentally enlarged Mandelbrot set. The location is in the area where Siegel disks appear in the corresponding Julia sets. (Siegel disks are a story for another day.) For no rational reason I named the image "Starry Seven". Then I rated it at a 7-1/2, giving myself a 1/2-point bonus for the extra effort I put into the coloring. The calculation is exactly seven minutes, within 1/100th of a second. I think this is the first time this has happened. But the time is a bit on the slow side, so for convenience, the finished image has been or soon will be posted on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Some clouds moved in here at Fractal central on Saturday, but when the temperature reached a high of 48F 9C, it felt almost like a day in mid-May. FOTD -- February 07, 2009 (Rating ?) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is not a Mandelbrot set, nor is it a Julia set. It is an Oblate set, a hybrid mixture of Mandeloid and Julia stuff. The X-axis lies in the Julia direction, while the Y-axis lies in the Mandelbrot direction. I have not yet made up my mind about today's image, which is why I gave it a rating of a question mark. At times, these four- dimensional slices through the Julibrots can be spectacular, but at other times, they are just plain ugly. Today's image lies somewhere in between.
