FOTD -- September 24, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: On Tuesday for some reason, FL fell into a state of near panic over the economy, (probably from watching too much doom-and- gloom TV), and by the time I got things settled down, it was too late for a real FOTD. But I did not want to miss the FOTD, so I decided to post an image that was intended to be a passing scene on the route to the real FOTD. I named it "Not a True FOTD" and gave it no rating. How could I rate an image that consists of merely two grossly mis-shapen minibrots? Actually the distortion is all the image has to offer. The main minibrot is so twisted that its buds are almost impossible to identify. The East Valley is obvious enough, but the Seahorse Valley lies on the upper left side of the main bay, where the period-2 bud is located. The really prominent valley sets off the southern period-3 bud, which is grossly distorted by the presence of a spurious hole. The large bud to the right of East Valley is actually the southern period-4 bud. All this being said, the image calculates in a blessedly brief 1-1/2 minutes. One-hundred-percent wall-to-wall sunshine prevailed here at Fractal Central on Tuesday. When the temperature rose from 50F 10C at sunrise to 72F 22C at 4:15pm, the fractal cats voiced their approval by calling for their afternoon treat. My day was kept busy by discussing economics, a topic about which I have far too little knowledge. But then, I see by watching the news that I'm not alone in my ignorance. At any rate, the next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours -- that is unless the stock market crashes on Wednesday, when the FOTD could be delayed indefinitely while I try again to ease FL's anxieties. FOTD -- September 23, 2008 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The fourth dimension is all around us, but because we look in the wrong direction, we can't see it. Then we protest that there are no more directions out there for us to look in. And this explains the difficulty. Instead of looking out there, we must look within, into our minds, which is where the fourth dimension, whatever it is, intersects our three-dimensional space. After years of looking within, I have created a mental four- dimensional hyper-planet, which I sometimes explore when sleep eludes me. Exploring this planet one 3-D section at a time is a far more efficient way of falling asleep than counting sheep. Sometimes, while traveling around the equator of my hyperplanet, I can almost form an image of the whole hypersphere. As I progress westward, I can see the polar great circle, which is the axis of rotation, appearing to turn on itself, all points of it always 90 degrees from wherever I may wander on the equator. At the same time, the equator can be the axis of rotation of the polar circle, resulting in the strange motion known as double rotation, a motion that can exist only in spaces of four or more dimensions. I am not sure what would be the apparent motion of the heavenly bodies as seen from the surface of a 4-D planet in a state of double rotation, but I suspect it might resemble a 3-D helix. One thing totally certain is that today's image has a minibrot at the center, and lies in the fractal that results when the formula Z^(1.9)+C. is iterated 8.7 turns up the logarithmic ladder with no function applied. When I named the image "Safe at Home", I might have been thinking of the Orioles baseball team, which I still listen to on the radio. I was definitely thinking of the coloring when I rated the otherwise humdrum image at a 7.5. The calculation time of 1-2/3 minutes will give the eager fractalist little time to think of anything else. FOTD 22-09-08 (Almost an Elephant [?.5])

FOTD -- September 22, 2008 (Rating ?.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the pseudo-East Valley of the parent fractal that results when the formula Z^(1.9)+C is iterated 66 levels up the logarithmic ladder with no function applied. (I'm not sure how the various functions make the mathematics any more accurate, but they sure do add to the variety of fractals.) I could not decide on a rating for today's image, so I finally let it go with a question mark plus 1/2 point for the effort I put into smoothing the palette of only 256 colors. Sometimes I look at the FOTD fractals I create and feel like I'm living in the past. I'm still enthusiastic about the type of fractals that were being created in the late 1980's. Then I feel like a total anachronism, a lone scientist in a makeshift laboratory, with wires clumsily hooked up to batteries, search- ing for the most efficient filament to put in an incandescent light bulb, while the rest of the world has moved on to far more efficient light-emitting-diodes. But what the heck -- finding fractals uses so little energy that it may actually help us out of the latest what's-up crisis. I named today's image "Almost an Elephant" because it is located in the trunk of an East-Valley elephant that is only 90-percent there. The calculation time of 1-3/4 minutes is brief by any standard. FOTD 21-09-08 (Divided We Prevail [8.5])

FOTD -- September 21, 2008 (Rating 8.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I somehow got involved in another 'antiquing' expedition on Saturday, this one to a tiny town named Richfield. And I must reluctantly admit that I am actually starting to enjoy these weekly trips to examine the stuff someone else no longer wanted. We got back to FC by 5pm, which left barely enough time to do the FOTD. As for that FOTD, it turned out surprisingly good. The parent fractal is the Mandeloid that appears when the formula Z^(1.9)+C is iterated 22 levels up the logarithmic ladder when no function is applied. Today's scene is located in a wedge-like valley leading to a large bud, where the fractal is divided to an unusual degree. Due to the fortuitous coloring, the image is one of the better ones I have yet found in the exponent range between 1 and 2. The rating of 8.5 includes the 1/2 point for my coloring effort. The name "Divided We Prevail" hints at the discontinuities that fill the frame and actually create the patterns. The calculation time of 2-1/2 minutes is about what would be expected for such an image. This is about the same time that is required to surf over to the FOTD web site and view the finished image there. FOTD 20-09-08 (Another Minibrot [6.5])

FOTD -- September 20, 2008 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Let's face it, today's image is just another minibrot, so that's what I named it. True, the minibrot is a bit fancier than some, but it's still only a simple humdrum minibrot in a world of infinite fractal possibilities. The little fellow has paid the price for being so common-place by having his rating cut from 7 to 6.5. The parent fractal is a fairly typical oversized north-south string of large bays, with a prominent 'fan' opening east from the origin. It was created by mixing various portions of Z^(-1.45) and Z^(-5.5) than adding (1/C). Today's image is located in a tiny cut-off goldfish-shaped feature near the eastern edge of the parent fractal's fan. The calculation time of 2-1/2 minutes is fast enough to prevent boredom, yet slow enough to let the anticipation build. The cloudless skies, brilliant sun and temperature of 72F 22C were just what the fractal cats wanted. As for humans, we could use a bit more rain, but all-in-all, things have been going quite benignly here for the past several months. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for other parts of the country. The fractal cats were more interested in the feline financial situation than receiving the weather they had wanted. FOTD 19-09-08 (Living Minibrot [7])

FOTD -- September 19, 2008 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: A quick glance at today's parameter file will reveal a 'biomorph' entry. I'm not sure what this feature was originally intended to do. My guess is that the idea came from an old, now forgotten article in 'Scientific American' magazine, which showed how life likely develops along fractal patterns. The parent fractal almost isn't. Instead of appearing as a screen filled with interesting intricacies, it is little more than an almost impossible to find dot far off to the southwest of the opening screen, which is a disappointing blank. But in this dot lies a tiny Mandelbrot set surrounded by far tinier dots with far tinier M-sets at their centers. Today's image is one of these miniscule sub-Mandelbrot sets. The 'biomorph' feature supplies the cusps that fill the image. The name "Living Minibrot" implies that earth life might have developed along fractal patterns. The rating of a 7 seems about right for a moderately impressive image that calculates in a F.T.L. 32 seconds. The short answer is Houston has a huge number of trees down and power out over most of the city. Power is being restored fairly slowly. However Houston will recover fine. The coastal areas such as Galveston have been devastated like the worst areas in New Orleans and will take years to recover. My workplace (NASA) is apparently little damaged but has no power or water, so I am out until at least Monday. Very possibly won't have my own power back until then, but I walked over to the University of Houston campus to send this. UH has power and is open. Tim

FOTD -- September 18, 2008 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a complete reversal of yesterday's. Though today's image is a blow-up of a small part of the lower left corner of yesterday's, it has none of the hellish malevolence. Instead of the fiery devilish effect, we have a peaceful almost heavenly effect, consisting almost entirely of various shades of blue. I can see no saints or angels in the scene, but who knows what we might find if we were to dig deep enough. Today's image is so different mostly because I evaporated the scene by raising the bailout radius to 1000 and rendered the resulting 'inside' stuff with the inside set to 'atan'. The result is an image that could almost have been taken through the space telescope. It is filled with stars and wispy fractal nebulae, with a few spirals thrown in to remind us that this is the virtual world of numbers, not the presumedly real world of the outer universe. I named the image "Beyond the Unknown". After all, this rather accurately describes most fractals. The rating of an 8 may seem liberal to some fractalists; to me it seems just about right. The calculation time of 4-1/4 minutes actually grows longer if any of the short-cut algorithms such as passes=g or passes=t are used. I guess the algorithms use too much time figuring what to do next and too little time calculating. But all these minor problems may be bypassed by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> A foggy morning gave way to a sunny afternoon here at Fractal Central on Wednesday. The temperature of 75F 24C was just what the fractal cats ordered. In my department things were notably un-notable. Just to keep things un-notable, the next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. However the school district will not reopen until Monday. My workplace, the United Space Alliance, did well despite being closer to the coast than we are. I'll be back at work Thursday at the soonest. Paul commented about Braes Bayou. We are indeed close but quite a bit higher. During Allison the bayou came over McGregor. This time not quite as high, but nowhere near us. Recently the Bayou was widened, which probably saved some friends. The lowest house along the bayou flooded last time but this time the water came right up to their steps. Tim
