FOTD -- October 13, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a little something I whipped up in a couple minutes. Its streaks and patches of intense colors bring it to FOTD status. I named it "Diversion" because that's basically all it is. I could give the image no rating because I put almost no effort into it. The calculation time of 2-1/2 minutes is thankfully brief. FOTD -- October 12, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal is not only late, it is lucky to be here at all. On Saturday, FL and I spent the day wandering aimlessly around the Gettysburg Military Park, and we didn't get back to FC until almost midnight. We saw no ghosts there, but I have no doubt that ghosts, whatever they are, actually exist in the area. I also sometimes wonder about my own credulity, since I believe in the reality of ghosts, (as well as fractals), while at the same time, I am the first to laugh at claims of UFO's carrying alien visitors from space. It's the day Columbus discovered America, and to celebrate the occasion we have a Fractal of the Day. The blueness of the image inspired the name "Having the Blues". FOTD 09-10-08 (Three Dimensions [6.5])

FOTD -- October 09, 2008 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is located near a larger minibrot in a loop near the East Valley of the largest minibrot on the negative spike of the parent fractal, which resembles a Mandelbrot set. The large minibrot itself is quite unusual, and its 'East Valley' must be seen to be believed. I named the image "Three Dimensions" because the minibrot at the center is clearly a cubic one. The unusually rich pattern of the cubic minibrot earned the image a FOTD status. After a few seconds thought, I rated the scene at a 6.5. The bit of extra effort I put into the coloring earns the extra half- point. The calculation time of just over 1 minute will cause no one any pain. Sun in the morning, clouds in the afternoon, and light rain in the evening marked Wednesday as a day that could have been better here at Fractal Central. FOTD -- October 10, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I'm afraid I can no longer keep the FOTD going on a daily basis with FL's continuing state of panic and a constant need for calming words. So as of tomorrow, I will stop posting the FOTD every day. When the present panicky financial situation is well behind us, I will resume the regular daily schedule. But this does not mean there will be no FOTD's until then, I will still post the FOTD on the less-panicky days. I have totally forgotten what today's image is about, but I think it lies in the east valley of its parent fractal. I gave it no rating and I named it "A Hole in One". The distorted mini- brot at the center is certainly a hole in something. The included parameter file calculates in just under 6 minutes. FOTD 04-10-08 (Disorderly Order [5])

FOTD -- October 04, 2008 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I named today's image "Disorderly Order". It is located in the East Valley of a minibrot floating in an area of total chaos surrounding a large Mandeloid at the center of the parent fractal. The disorderly parent chaos is reflected in the texture throughout the scene. The immediately recognizable pattern reflects the order. I rated the image at a 5. After all, how impressive can a scene lying not all that deep in an East Valley be. Perhaps the most impressive thing about the image is the fact that a negative logmap setting works best with it. The calculation time of 19 minutes is pretty impressive also, so I strongly recommend viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Early morning clouds gave way to afternoon sunshine here at Fractal Central on Friday, while the temperature reached a high of a slightly chilly 61F 16C. The fractal cats cleared the unwanted cats from the area early, then spent the rest of the day sleeping and thundering up and down the hallway at top speed, like a herd of . . . well, hyperactive cats! My day was busy. Enough said. I'll be spending most of the day Saturday back at Old Fractal Central, so the next FOTD will not appear until October 06. FOTD -- October 08, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: NEW FORMULA ALERT! Today's image was created with a new formula. The new formula is a slight generalization of the DivideBrot5a formula, and adds a new variable parameter as well as a variable function applied to 'C'. The result takes us pretty much back to where the DivideBrot series began. Since I don't feel like writing a discussion, I will not write one. It's up to the image to speak for itself. FOTD -- October 07, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: On Monday FL had another financial panic attack, and I had to spend most of my normal fractal time assuring that the world is not ending and we should not sell all our investments right now before they drop to zero value. I still managed to find a kind of fractal however, which I named "Enola Rail Yards". The Enola rail yards are an actual place on Route 15 near Harrisburg, and the high point of the trip to and from Old Fractal Central. Every time I pass the yards, I glance over at the hundreds of parked locomotives, thankful that the trip is half finished. Today's image is an actual scene in its parent fractal, which is basically an oversized Mandelbrot set. The scene is located near a split-apart minibrot on the infinitely-divided main stem of the parent. Since I put almost no effort into the image, I gave it no rating. The calculation time is a blazingly brief 56 seconds. And finally, the already-calculated GIF image is or soon will be posted on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The sun shone, the breeze blew, and the temperature reached 59F 15C here at Fractal Central on Monday. FOTD -- October 06, 2008 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The minibrot at the center of today's image looks like an ordinary quadratic one. But do not be deceived by appearances. It is actually a minibrot of order 1.95, basically indistinguish- able from a quadratic minibrot. The parent fractal appears to be an oversized Mandelbrot set, but some minor differences along the negative X-axis spoil its perfection. Today's image lies in one of these differences. The image is located in an almost totally swallowed up scepter, its remains barely peeking out from a discontinuity. I named it "Kaleidoscope Color" when I remembered how, as a child, I spent hours gazing into one of those toy kaleidoscopes, watching the broken bits of colored glass create ever-changing 6-sided patterns. I rated the image at a 6.5, giving myself a half-point bonus for the work I put into the coloring. Had I put a little more work into the colors, I might have been able to rate the image at a 7. The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes is within reason. Viewing the completed image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> is also quite reasonable. The trip back to Old Fractal Central on Saturday was uneventful. But curiously enough, even though I moved away 2-1/2 years ago and only one of the old fractal cats is still alive, it still seems like I'm returning home from a vacation trip. The Saturday weather at New Fractal Central was miserable -- cloudy with light rain and a temperature of 54F 12C, while at Old Fractal Central it was sunny and 72F 22C. Sunday here at New Fractal Central was mostly sunny and quite pleasant, with a temperature of 64F 18C. The one remaining old fractal cat, Thomas, slept through the fine weather on Saturday. The two new fractal cats, Nicholas and Cassandra, stood watch in the window most of Sunday, making sure no unwanted cats intruded into the yard. I simply took both days as easy as possible, which is not too easy on a day with a 300-mile round trip included. The next FOTD, undoubtedly glorious, will be posted in an incredibly brief 24 hours. I have upgraded my P3-733 / Win98SE system twice over the years; each new card performed worse with fractint (but better with games). The most recent was unusable in a win shell. The default image would draw but using any keys caused a lock-up. I finally put back in the original Hercules card (1999) and now fractint is cool again, but games suck. This is also the case with WinXP and current systems. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, at least that I can see. Some graphics cards work, some don't. Luck of the draw I guess.
