FOTD -- October 24, 2008 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due to a huge rush, today's image is an ultra-quickie, a Z^8 minibrot with East Valley Z^2 characteristics. I named it "Dynamic Structures", which is a fair description of all fractals. The rating of a 7 seems about right. FOTD -- October 23, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due to the continuing rush here at Fractal central, today's image is another quickie that fails to merit a rating. But I did give it a name. When I saw all the complex filaments converging on the order-13 minibrot at the center, I named it "All Roads Lead to Here". Even with no rating, the image is worth a quick glance. That glance may be enjoyed by running the included parameter file and waiting a brief 1-1/2 minutes, or by going to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and glancing at it posted there in already-calculated form. Cloudy skies and blustery winds spoiled Wednesday here at Fractal Central. Being stuck in front of the LED screen all day, I was not bothered by the temperature of 43F 6C. But the fractal cats complained when they missed their afternoon sun. The next FOTD image will be posted in 24 hours. Whether it is accompanied by a discussion depends on how well the load of work goes. This begs the question: if natural selection assisted the favorable mutations, (perfectly logical), what then other than pure chance guided the mutation process to produce mutations that were favorable? (No, I don't necessarily endorse the 'In- telligent Design' [God did it.] theory, but with a near-infinity of mutations possible, and with such a miniscule number of them favorable, it seems to me that it would take closer to a google years for intelligent life such as man to evolve by chance.) FOTD -- October 22, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Another hyper-busy day here at F.C. means another abbreviated discussion. Suffice it to say that today's image lies in an evaporated fractal. What is seen on the screen is nothing but empty 'inside' stuff made visible by the 'bof60' inside fill. (The image is actually a zoom into yesterday's image.) Today's image reminds me of a deep-sky photograph, perhaps taken by the now broken-down Hubble Space Telescope. The object at the center so closely resembles a globular cluster surrounded by smaller clusters that I named the image "Globular Clusters". I could not rate the image, which I found almost automatically. But I feel that running the 10-minute parameter file will result at least in fractal satisfaction, even if it does not rescue the economy. FOTD 18-10-08 (Deep Seahorse Scene [No Rating])

FOTD -- October 18, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: A fiery fractal with the speed of light, a cloud of iterations and a hearty "Hi-Yo Fractint". From out of the past come the thundering convolutions of the great fractal Mandelbrot. The Lone Mandelbrot rides again. Return with us now to those thril- ling days of yesteryear . . . Well, I had to say something to stir up a little excitement. Today's image is indeed a flashback to the past, even if only an under-iteratered scene deep in Seahorse Valley of the all-too- familiar Mandelbrot set. And this is why I named it "Deep Sea- horse Scene". I gave it no rating because these kinds of images were one of the first things I was producing in those ancient days when I was a young tyro fractalist. (Now I'm an old tyro fractalist.) The one thing that keeps the image from being totally hackneyed is its magnitude of 2.4x(10^14), which lies just beyond the range of conventional math. The resulting calculation time of almost 48 minutes begs impatience, but a quick though blurred preview of the scene may be viewed in 7 seconds (less than 1/300 the ap time) by switching to conventional math with the command mathtolerance=0.05/1 But all this math-switching and resulting impatience may be avoided by viewing the finished image posted in full arbitrary- precision definition on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Morning clouds gave way to afternoon sun on Friday here at Fractal Central, while the temperature dropped to a far more seasonable high of 59F 15C. FOTD 17-10-08 (Absolute Complexity [8.5])

FOTD -- October 17, 2008 (Rating 8.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image brings a much-anticipated improvement in FOTD quality. In fact, it actually earns a rating -- one of 8.5. The parent fractal is a mandeloid whose negative stem has collapsed into an area of fractured chaos, forming a kind of west valley. But today's scene is not located in this valley. It is found on the northeast shore of the main bay, near a larger minibrot in a cut-off section of a kind of elephant trunk. The cut-off nature of the general area is reflected throughout the image. The name "Absolute Complexity" means little, since nothing can be so complex that it could not possibly be more complex. (Except maybe fractals, which are infinitely complex.) The calculation time of 4-1/5 minutes means that some patience must be shown in the rendering process. A partly cloudy morning with a temperature of 75F 24C here at Fractal Central on Thursday gave way to a cloudy afternoon with falling temperatures, which had dropped to 64F 18C at FOTD post time, which was 1800 hrs. FOTD -- October 16, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: We successfully weathered another panicky day here at F.C. on Wednesday, with quite a few more to come I am sure. Today's fractal diversion reminds me of a fractal caught in the act of manifesting. I named it "Etheric Mandeloid", but gave it no rating. The parameter file is slower than the recent images, taking 8-2/3 minutes to finish on the fastest machine. Time may be saved however by viewing the completed image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Wednesday was a near perfect day here at Fractal Central, just a couple degrees cooler than Tuesday. FOTD -- October 15, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Things are a little calmer here at FC, but nowhere near what I would call serene. At least, fractals never get panicky! I have picked up the latest developer's version of Fractint, which has the DivideBrot5 formula hard-coded into it, and allows the use of arbitrary-precision math with the formula. I will not use the new version for the FOTD's for a while however, to give those on the list a chance to first pick up the new version. Today's image was created with the old DivideBrot5a formula. But it could just as easily have been made with the new type=dividebrot5. I named it "Tangerine Tempest" just for the fun of it. I gave it no rating because I don't think it's worth one. The 2-1/2 minute calculation time will pass like lightning for true fractal fanatics. FOTD -- October 14, 2008 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The minibrot of order 1-1/3 at the center of today's image gives me a feeling of gloom. Just look at the dark somber colors filling the screen. No wonder I named it "Depressed Minibrot". The shape of the minibrot pretty much mirrors the shape of its parent fractal, whose main spike it lies on. Putting almost no effort into the image, I could hardly give it a rating. Then again, maybe it is better than I think. Some- times I come up with these images intuitively, almost without effort, and therefore consider them worthless. The calculation time of 29 seconds is faster than light, which means that the calculation will be finished 34 seconds before it is begun. I make no comment on what will happen if, 34 seconds after seeing the finished image appear on your screen, you decide not to run the parameter file after all. All such paradoxes may be avoided by viewing the completed image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Lots of clouds marred the sky over Fractal Central on Monday, but the temperature of 68F 20C kept things quite pleasant.
