Thanks to an online survey in which I participated some time ago, Scientific American online has invited me to be a member in its new online community, which is quite exciting. I'm listed as Anthony Hanmer, and my blog there is called SubCreator. My first series of posts will reissue the letter I wrote to the Fractint list in early September 2004, dealing with "Tiles of the regular reptiles for all dimensions above 1". The observable universe spans 10-20 Billion light years, depending on your source of info. Assuming a 19 inch monitor display, a fractal magnification of about E+27 puts you there. Thus your image at E+37 is not ten times the size of the universe, it is ten orders of magnitude bigger, that's ten billion times the size of the universe. Hard to fathom, but numbers don't lie. I actually have a simple DOS program on my site that does this calculation. Stay Amazed! JoTz .

FOTD -- October 19, 2007 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Greetings once again from Fractal Central, located in glorious central Pennsylvania. Today's image takes us to the parent fractal that is created when 5 negative parts of Z^(-1.5) are combined with 1 negative part of Z^(-5) and (1/C) is added. For extra interest the escape radius is reduced to 40 and the scene is rendered with the outside set to 'tdis'. This parent fractal is a string of 3 north-south aligned, nearly circular bays. Today's scene is located not too deep in one of the western valleys between the bays. I named the image "X Is Where It's At" because of the prominent 'X'-shaped figure around the central minibrot. This 'X' is almost entirely a result of the coloring, so I decided to reward myself by adding an extra 1/2 point to the 7 that I rated the image. In contrast to the images of the past few days, which had a calculation time of hours, today's image finishes in a mere 50 seconds. Another summer-like day here at Fractal Central was spoiled on Thursday by too many clouds. But despite the clouds, the temper- ature reached 77F 25C, bringing out the shirt sleeves and shorts in the area. Not needing clothes, the fractal cats spent the day stretched in the window, waiting for the sun. Unfortunately they got only a few minutes of sunshine for their effort, and extra tuna was needed to ease their disappointment. My day was busy but under control. FOTD -- October 18, 2007 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Yesterday's image showed part of the pattern surrounding an infinitesimal minibrot in the East Valley area of the large minibrot at -1.75 on the negative X-axis of the Mandelbrot set. Today's image takes us all the way down to this tiny minibrot. The depth of today's scene is truly amazing. At the scale of today's image, yesterday's scene would be enlarged to many times the size of the solar system, while at the scale of yesterday's image the entire Mandelbrot set would also be enlarged to many times the size of the solar system. I have not done the cal- culation, but I suppose that at the scale of today's image, the entire Mandelbrot set would occupy a significant part of the visible universe. I named the image "The Minibrot Revealed". Since the name says it all, no further explanation is necessary. The minibrot is actually quite an impressive one, revealing as it does the tendency of all minibrots at such a magnitude to be surrounded by a large number of concentric, circular, but well ornamented rings. The image is well worth the rating of an 8 that I bestowed on it. The drawback is the extreme slowness of the image, which takes almost 2 hours to complete on the fractal fireball and would take around 10 hours on the old cold snowball. But salvation is at hand in the form of the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> where the image will shortly be posted, if it is not already posted. Only a bit too much haze and a few too many clouds kept Wednes- day from being absolutely perfect here at Fractal Central. The high temperature of 75F 24C was certainly perfect enough. The fractal cats must have agreed, for they spent most of the day watching the pigeons roosting and cooing on the roof of the house next door. I might say my day was almost perfect also, but before I could make such a claim, I would have to know just what an absolutely perfect day would be like. So far, I have never had a day when nothing at all went wrong, so I guess I'll be satisfied saying my day Wednesday was rather good. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours give or take a few. FOTD -- October 17, 2007 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "East to the Sixth". I gave it this name because it is a scene in the East Valley of a minibrot in the East Valley of a minibrot in the East Valley of a minibrot in the East Valley of a minibrot in the East Valley of a minibrot in the East Valley of the large minibrot on the main spike of the Mandelbrot set. With all those minibrots lined up above today's scene, it's little wonder that some unusual things have appeared in what should be an everyday scene in a typical East Valley. Actually, the high magnitude of today's scene, which has been rotated 89.99 degrees, (There's a bug that prevents a full 90-degree rotation.), reaches nowhere near the magnitude of the unseen minibrot at the center, which is about 10,000,000,000 times as great. But there is quite a fine minibrot down there, which will likely make the FOTD in a day or so. I decided to rate today's FOTD image at a 7. Maybe the central minibrot itself, when it finally appears, will rate an 8. With a calculation time of over one hour on the fireball and five hours on the snowball, today's fractal almost demands a visit to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> for an immediate viewing. Tuesday's temperature reached 68F 20C here at Fractal Central, but increased clouds kept it from being another perfect day. The fractal cats must have agreed. FOTD 16-10-07 (Hyper-Dry Valley [6])

FOTD -- October 16, 2007 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's curious image is another venture into the fractal that results when 0.2 parts of Z^3 are subtracted from Z^2 before C is added. This fractal appears as a Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees, with an extra spike extending from its East Valley, which of course is on its west side. But today we ignore this extra spike and check the more conven- tional spike extending eastward from the Mandeloid's nose. There is a very prominent minibrot on this spike, which appears to be two partially merged minibrots. Today's image is located rather deep in the northern branch of what at first appears to be a Seahorse-type valley, but actually is an entirely new type of valley. I named the image "Hyper-Dry Valley" because despite the promis- ing appearance of the chaotic yet symmetrical 'object', I could find no minibrot at the center. The minibrot might be there, but the resolution failed before I reached it. Despite the disappointment, I rated the image at a 6. The fractal object, if indeed it *is* an object, has such a real appearance that I could do no less. I'll leave it to the philo- sophers to argue the actual reality of fractal objects such as the Mandelbrot set. But one thing that cannot to be argued is the calculation time of the image, which is a rather slow 10-3/4 minutes on the fractal fireball, and just over one hour on the fractal snowball. FOTD 15-10-07 (In a Blue Mood [6])

FOTD -- October 15, 2007 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's discussion will be unusually brief. The reason is simple -- I was in an unusually lazy mood all day. Today's image is a scene in the fractal that results when Z^3 is mixed with straight Z and straight C is added. The resulting parent fractal appears as a Mandelbrot set rotated so that its normally west-facing nose faces south and its eastern butt faces north. It has spikes extending straight out from both its nose and butt, and these spikes are littered with interesting bits and pieces of fractal debris. Today's scene is located in a small bit of chaos that lies on the spike extending south from the parent fractal's nose. I named the image "In a Blue Mood" because I'm in kind of a blue mood after the brief return to the place that served as Fractal Central for so many years and the aging cats who were the frac- tal cats even longer. After not very much thought, I rated today's image at a 6. And most of that rating comes from the (IMO) expert coloring. The calculation time of 2-1/3 minutes is well within reason. Even more reasonable is a trip to view the image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Another perfect day prevailed here at Fractal Central on Sunday, as F.L. and I recovered from the trip back to Old Fractal Cen- tral on Saturday to see the old fractal cats Thomas and Tippy, who are still hanging in there after almost 18 years. They are now kept quite happy by my sister, who still serves their tuna treats every evening. Curiously, the old and the new fractal cats have never met, and probably never will.
