. Invoke fractint then load the gif. Hit "E" key and you will see a pallette box. Then hit "S" and give it a filename. You will save the exact map from the image, not cycled. Then hit ESC to lose the pallette box. To compare maps, use the "FC" command in DOS (it is also available in the WinXP command shell), which shouldnt be a problem unless you are commandlinephobic. Here is what it does: Compares two files or sets of files and displays the differences between them FC [/A] [/C] [/L] [/LBn] [/N] [/OFF[LINE]] [/T] [/U] [/W] [/nnnn] [drive1:][path1]filename1 [drive2:][path2]filename2 FC /B [drive1:][path1]filename1 [drive2:][path2]filename2 /A Displays only first and last lines for each set of differences. /B Performs a binary comparison. /C Disregards the case of letters. /L Compares files as ASCII text. /LBn Sets the maximum consecutive mismatches to the specified number of lines. /N Displays the line numbers on an ASCII comparison. /OFF[LINE] Do not skip files with offline attribute set. /T Does not expand tabs to spaces. /U Compare files as UNICODE text files. /W Compresses white space (tabs and spaces) for comparison. /nnnn Specifies the number of consecutive lines that must match after a mismatch. [drive1:][path1]filename1 Specifies the first file or set of files to compare. [drive2:][path2]filename2 Specifies the second file or set of files to compare. Extraction of .map from displayed image

Need information as to how to get the .map information from a displayed .gif WITHOUT going to color cycling and entering <s>. If that can not be accomplished, is there any way to compare .map files to eliminate duplicates? I have a program which compares .map files and lists dups, but if the .map is cycled, then saved, and compared it doesn't list a duplicate since the first RGB entry is different due to the rotation. What I am looking for is a comparision for duplication regardless of the placement of the RGB values as long as they are in the identical sequence between .map files. I have multimap.exe, which is fine for comparision if the .map has not been cycled. I have a .gif for which I am trying to find the .map. I did, from a screen display, cycle the colors; then entered <s>, saved to an entered file name. Exited fractint, found the saved file and ran multimap.exe to find the .map in my .map directory. No duplicate found, although I know it is there. I then did a test: Took a known.map file, cycled it, saved as above and did a multimap comparision. No duplicate was found, and it is my guess that the cycling rotated the RGB order so that a linear comparision, while correct, is not accurate. Am I pissing into the wind? FOTD -- October 26, 2007 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With the number of video cameras, cell phone cameras, etc. now in circulation, why has no one yet produced a clear photograph of an alien space craft? I want to believe, but I have nothing to believe in, other than fractals, that is. And I'm not even sure I believe fractals are real. For today's fractal adventure I mixed Z^(0.996) with Z^(-0.996), added straight C and cut the escape radius to 90. To me, the resulting parent fractal resembles an alien flying saucer lying on its side. Some might see Bozo the Clown or maybe Popeye the sailor, but whatever one sees, the whole fractal is on the verge of evaporating, which is the reason for the name "The Vanishing Point". In fact, I had to reduce the bailout to 90 to keep the part of the parent where today's image is located from slipping into the imaginary fractal world. My efforts were rewarded with an FOTD that rates a 6. It could have been better, but it also could have been worse, so I can't complain. Today's image is located on the north shore of the parent fractal, at the point where the bud-filled chaotic shore ends and the smooth shoreline begins. I added extra interest by rendering the scene with the inside set to 'fmod' and the outside set to 'summ'. The calculation time of 8 minutes is slightly slow, but still well within reason for an image that has never before been seen and never again will be seen. And an even faster way to see the image is to go to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and view the image in finished form there. The Thursday weather proved un-notable here at Fractal Central of central Pennsylvania. The high temperature of 61F 16C was fair enough, the partly cloudy skies were fair enough, and the mild wind from the east was fair enough. The fractal cats agreed as they kept a sharp eye on the pigeons roosting under the eaves of the house next door. I had a rather busy day working on a menu for a local restaurant. But the work went smoothly and the task was completed with ample time remaining for the day's fractal. The next fractal will be posted in 24 hours, more or less. FOTD -- October 25, 2007 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The formula behind today's image subtracts Z^4 from Z and adds straight C. This mixture produces a Mandelbrot-like figure rotated 180 degrees with two sizable extra bays sprouting like butterfly wings from its butt end. Today's scene is located on the south shore of the new valley separating these two extra bays. Most of the interest was achieved by rendering the image with the outside set to 'tdis' and the inside set to'fmod' with the default proximity factor of 0.01 in effect. The mathtolerance entry was necessary to assure that the image calculates at the correct magnitude. I named the image "Over a Blue Horizon" because the greenish elements in the foreground appear to be floating over a hazy, more distant, bluish background. Then I bestowed a rating of 6 on the whole works. I could see no real reason to give a higher rating. The included parameter file finishes in 5 minutes on the fast machine and 22 minutes on the slow one. Heavy overcast, with a chilly temperature around 55F 13C, light rain and a raw wind from the north made Wednesday an unpleasant day here at Fractal Central. FOTD -- October 24, 2007 (Rating 5.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The parent fractal of today's image, which was created by combining Z with Z^(-0.5) and adding C, resembles a fractal bullet. Today's scene is located on the north shore of the bullet, where some very tiny mandel-buds are located. I named the image "Nevermore Land" because after finding what lies there, it is unlikely that I'll ever go there again. I could rate the image itself at only a 5. My semi-expert color- ing efforts added the extra half-point. Today's fractal image shows an abstract land of fractals -- a land created by numbers and populated by the horde of similar figures that fill the frame. Not surprisingly, as we dive deeper into the image, these figures are repeated at ever smaller sizes without end, all the way to infinitesimal infin- ity. That's the way fractals are. An overwhelmingly prominent, blazing white minibrot sits at the center of today's scene, looking strangely out of place, almost as though it were dropped there by some higher power. It has little symmetry to betray its existence, and almost no basin of attraction around it. Other smaller minibrots are scattered throughout the scene, all of them similar to the one in today's image. The parameter file at the end of this discussion takes just over 5 minutes to complete on the fireball P4-2000mhz machine. On the droopy old P-200mhz snowball unit it takes about 1/2 hour. On the FOTD web site the image has already been calculated and posted for maximum enjoyment. FOTD -- October 23, 2007 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "The Wheel of Eternity". I was in a kind of mystical mood when I searched for a name, and this is what I came up with. And why not get mystical with fractals? After all, almost anything seems to be considered true by someone some- where in today's world, where those who have actually experi- enced the preternatural know that it does exist, and skeptics, who are solidly grounded in physical reality, know that it does not. Since I have yet to decide whether fractals are real, un- real, or somewhere in between, I have no comment at this time on the preternatural. (I might have a comment in the not-too- distant future however.) One thing in-between is today's image. Though it is worth about a 6, I actually rated it at a 6.5. The extra half-point is to reward myself for the minimum of extra effort I put into the coloring. I am sometimes asked why I post so many images of Minibrots. The answer is that this is the infinitesimal part of the infinite world of fractals that I have chosen to concentrate on, and learn as much as possible about. When working with fractals, one can know either a little about a lot or a lot about a little. I have made the latter choice. The parent fractal was created when I subtracted Z^(1.1) from 10 parts of Z^(-1.1) and then added C, while increasing the escape radius to 625. This parent fractal lies totally off the default screen, making a couple outzooms necessary before it comes into view. It consists of a distorted Mandeloid, shaped somewhat like a dumbbell, with a period-2 bud larger than its main bay, and a smaller, half-obscured Mandeloid some distance southwest. Today's scene is located in what appears to be a kind of East Valley of this smaller Mandeloid. With its calculation time of 1-1/4 minutes, today's image is blessedly fast. But the minor chore of setting up and running the included parameter file is still there. This minor task may be avoided however by going to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and viewing the completed image there. With partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 73F 23C, Monday was rather pleasant here at Fractal Central. The fractal cats must have agreed, for they spent a good part of the day sleeping. FOTD -- October 21, 2007 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: After a run of images that take sizable portions of an hour to calculate, today's rather dark and gloomy but sizzling-fast image finishes in 13 seconds. The image is a scene in the parent fractal that comes about when 0.3 part of Z^2 is subtracted from 0.3 part of Z^(-3) and straight C is added. This parent fractal is an oversized thing that vaguely suggests a Mandelbrot set that has been rotated 180 degrees and filled with fascinating intricacies. Today's scene in located in the part of the parent fractal which might be the remnants of the large minibrot on the negative X-axis. I named the image "A Lot of Nothing" for no logical reason at all. There certainly is a lot of something in the image -- an infinity of it. In fact, there is enough stuff in the hidden depths of today's image to give every fractalist on earth a different infinity to explore from now through eternity. After I named the image, I rated it at a 6-1/2. Once again I rewarded myself for the extra effort I put into the coloring. The calculation time of 13-2/3 seconds is as fast as lightning. Even the worn-out old P200 machine finishes the calculation in under 1 minute. But the most convenient way of all to view the image is to go to the FOTD web site and view it in finished form there. FOTD -- October 22, 2007 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "The Lost Minibrot". I gave it this name for a good reason -- I lost the parameter data when I saved the image in the wrong format. The image, which I did not rate but which would be worth an 8, can be seen only by going to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> All I can say about today's image is that it was probably crea- ted with either the MandAutoCritInZ formula or the MandelbrotBC2 formula. I'll try to track it down when I get a chance, but success is very unlikely. Sunday turned out totally perfect here at Fractal Central. The cloudless sky and temperature of 73F 23C was perfect for almost anything except farming. The fractal cats agreed as they basked on their window shelf in the warm sun. My day was pretty good. It would have been better if I had not lost the parameters of today's image, but the image itself survived even though it will probably never be further explored. The next FOTD will appear, along with its parameters, in just 24 hours. Until then, take care, and what is it all about?
