Hello, I am interested in using fractint (the dos version) but could not get the program to run on my computer. My computer is Windows 2000, with a fairly good processor (3.4 Ghz), lots of space on my hard drive (> 100 GB) and plenty of ram (2 GB). When I ran the dos program I got this error message: run-time error R6009 - not enough space for environment Is this a problem you have encountered before? Thanks, Russell A. Those early fractint versions are way cool to play with - amazing how the program has evolved over the years. I had an idea that they might actually render deep zooms quicker due to simpler code etc., but alas, they do not. I can't even use current sstools.ini or fractint.cfg file, saved pars, etc. or current resolution levels. But it's cool. Thanx for posting them. JoTz

Glad everyone likes it! <g> I have others on my web site, but lower resolution. Internet wildfire spread? I thought noone or very few would try to download 175 meg. But my server log says over 100 downloads in past 3 days! Someone posted a link on a photography forum, a couple other sites. How'd this happen so fast!? I hope my server don't crash. Or I might get surcharged. Fortunately I have a real good ISP. JoTz

As most people should know, if they have read through the History portion of the FractInt documentation, it was not until February 1989 when versin 06.00 came out that the current name of FractInt was used. Prior to that it was called Fract386. I have not put them all on the site yet, am waiting to see if Tim finds anything else within his archives and old hardrives. No. That is the first thing I thought of. But if that was it ALL versions of fractint would show the same behavior. They do not. It does take longer to get through the lake area, but if you hit TAB a couple minutes apart, you will see different number for row/column etc showing it is still working, albiet slowly. When I say it freezes I mean it locks up on one pixel and doesn't procede any further - same row/column for hours. No problem with the E+55 minibrot (the second one) in the video, but on the final E+89 brot, shortly after the tiny black spot in the center begins to resolve itself, the freeze happens and I switch to Fractint95 and it works. I call it fractint95 because the date on the file is 1995, I think it is version 19.3 or 19.6. The freeze happens at the boundary of the minibrot, about half way through it. Exactly why or what is going on I do not know, I suspect an endless loop - it never bails for some reason. If I save the image at this point and reload it into fractint95 it continues normally. As to the depth at which it occurs, it is between E+55 and E+89 obviously, but I recall this happening many years ago also before I started making animations, just deep stills. I have all fractint versions since the "fractal creations" CD, which I recall is version 16. They do not all behave the same! Some work for some things and others don't. You may find this out if you do a lot of experimenting. I wish I could get the old versions just to check out - starting with version 1.0 in 1987! Anyone know where / if these are available? JoTz

FOTD -- May 26, 2006 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's unscheduled FOTD is an extra one. I posted it to let everyone know that the FOTD is in no danger of coming to an end. But there is still a long way to go before things will be under control here at New Fractal Central. Fractal Lady is worrying herself to distraction trying to decide how to arrange the furniture in the new larger house. I keep telling her to put the tables and chairs on the floor and hang the pictures on the walls, but when she does this, it never seems to work out. At least fractals are not so complicated. Today's un-named and un-rated image is a hastily found scene in the fractal that results when 0.1 part of Z^(-15.5) is subtracted from Z^(-1.6) and (1/C) is added. The special effects were created by the outside=tdis option.
