FOTD -- February 09, 2006 (No Rating, No Name) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene in the fractal created by the formula Z^(2.5)-Z^(-1.5)+(1/C). This parent fractal is a hugely sprawl- ing thing with a disproportioned and twisted Mandeloid near the center. Today's image is located in what I assume is the East Valley of the parent. I cannot be sure it is the East Valley because the Mandeloid is distorted almost beyond recognition. Once again, I gave the image no rating and no name. If I had rated the image, it would have earned about a 7. If I had named it, I would have given it a name associated with diamonds. The 19-minute render time is slower than recent images, but the result is better, making the overall worth about the same. FOTD -- February 08, 2006 (Not rated or named) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's nameless image lies in the fractal that results when 1/2 part of Z^(-7.5) is combined with one part of Z^(-0.7) and (1/C) is added. It's a good thing I didn't rate it. If I had, it would have scored about a 2. I simply had no time to work on the coloring, and the muddy, unpleasant palette that results is hardly worthy of an FOTD. The included parameter file runs in under 3 minutes. FOTD -- February 07, 2006 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows a scene on the eastern side of the north branch of Seahorse Valley of the Mandelbrot set. The associated radical has a periodicity of 23. As has often been the case recently, I have given the image neither name nor rating. Per- haps the most incredible thing about today's fractal is the fact that a unique scene can be found so quickly in such a well- explored parent fractal. On my 2300mhz fireball unit, the image renders in well under one minute. On the 10-year-old 200mhz unit it takes 6-3/4 minutes. Regardless of the render time, the completed image may be seen almost immediately by downloading it from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The deed has been done and I'm back at the fractal machine. The New Fractal Central has been purchased and paid for, and we are waiting only for the present residents to move out before moving from the Old Fractal Central forever. My sister has agreed to move into Old Fractal Central when we move out, and live there until the two fractal cats depart this world. The dynamic duo are near 16 years old, and are so set in their ways that we will not upset them by moving them. This means we will be choosing two new fractal cats in the near future. And yes, I will post pictures of the old fractal cats, Thomas and Tippy, before we move away from Old Fractal Central. I'll probably pick up a throw-away camera to take the photos. A sunny, brisk and breezy day on Monday here at Old Fractal Central kept the fractal cats close to home. My day was very busy as I tried to catch up the overdue work. FOTD -- February 02, 2006 (Not Rated) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: This will be the last FOTD for 5 days. But do not be alarmed. I will simply be out of town during that time, purchasing the New Fractal Central and making contacts in central Pennsylvania. The next FOTD will appear in its full glory on February 7. Today's image is a Julia set of the Z^(1.3)+C Mandeloid as it appears a full 52 levels up the infinite spiral. When rendered in the normal manner, the image consists of a single empty black hole. The entire sawtooth effect of today's image was achieved by rendering the scene with the inside set to 'fmod'. In keeping with the recent trend, I gave today's image neither name nor rating. FOTD -- February 01, 2006 (Not Rated) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows a midget deep in the western shoreline of the northern branch of Scepter Valley of the Mandelbrot set. It is neither named nor rated. The only thing unusual about the image is the nearly circular pattern surrounding the central midget. On my old 200mhz clunker, the image takes 24-1/2 minutes to calculate. My 2300mhz fireball unit finishes the image in just over 1 minute -- a speed increase of 23 times. Unfortunately, the spectacular speed increase of the new unit is true only for fractal types Mandelbrot and Julia. (At least, I have found no other fractal types with such a speed increase.) The speed increase of the type formula fractals is closer to a modest 4 times. I suspect the types Mandelbrot and Julia use a specially designed and very efficient routine. My day was another very busy one. The next FOTD has an 81-percent chance of being posted in 24 hours. The philosophy will be on hold until the New Fractal Central is established, which will not be before the start of summer.
