FOTD -- February 28, 2006 (Rating -- NONE) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image came about when I subtracted two parts of Z^(1.7) from Z^(1.1) and added C. The resulting parent fractal is a variation on the Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees. Today's scene is located rather deep in the Seahorse Valley of the parent. On the surface, the resulting image is pretty much what would be expected of a Seahorse Valley fractal. But a closer look reveals extra features above and beyond what would be expected. The image is not far enough above and beyond the usual to earn a name or rating however. I have given it only a catalog date. The one bad feature of the image is its slowness. With a render time of almost 1-1/2 hours, the image would test the patience of a saint. I have used the program Quat to create 3D and 4D fractal objects.

I have successfully used the program Quat to create 3D fractal objects. I have also changed the parameter for the 4th dimension using a batch program and created good movies of morphing 3D projections of 4D objects. You can make left/right eye view stereoscopic 3D objects. There are a Windows installer and uninstaller. Does NY1 if it is possible to exist a real 3D fractal? I am not talking about a 3D projection of a 2D image, like you can do with fractint and other programs, or simply rotating the Mandelbrot set about the x-axis to create a "cylinder" type. I mean a real 3D in the math. The Mandelbrot plots along the X and Y axis (real and imaginary) in a 2D plane. But what about the 3rd axis (which would be perpendicular to the screen, coming out at you and projecting behind)? And it would be plotted in a cube, ie, "3-space". I can do some coding but my math skills are not up to this, maybe the Russ man has some ideas. Those who beat their swords into ploughshares will plough for those who don't ... JoTz

Several of use implemented genuine 3D hypercomplex and quaterbion fractals in POV-Ray. Because POV-Ray is such a powerful renderer, this is a good way to go to make 3D fractals. On fractint julibrot is "genuine 3d", but it just has one simpleminded renderer Tim

FOTD -- February 25, 2006 (Not Rated) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due to the continuing task of preparing to move, there will be no FOTD for February 26 or 27. The next FOTD will appear on February 28. Today's image is a view in the Oblate direction of the curious rectangle located at Z coordinates 0.00019+0.07388i in the C=(-1.7435) Julia set of the Z^(2.003)+C Mandeloid. As is immediately obvious, the rectangle, which is at the center of the image, remains a rectangle in this new direction, even though a good bit of stretching and skewing was necessary to make a proper rectangle of it. I guess I could have given the image a name and rating, but it is the kind of fractal that, for those with ears to hear, speaks for itself and needs no words or numbers. The render time of 5 minutes is not too bad. Downloading the completed GIF image from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> is even simpler. Too much wind and a temperature of 39F 4C kept the fractal cats safely inside here at Old Fractal Central on Friday. The work kept me equally subdued. FOTD -- February 24, 2006 (No Name or Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The rush continues here at O.F.C., as do the quickie fractals. Today's image pictures an 'atom' deep in the East Valley area of the large midget at -1.75 on the X-axis of the Mandelbrot set. Such scenes are far too common to earn a name or rating, so I gave today's image neither. The render time on my ancient machine is 1-1/2 seconds less than 1/2 hour. On a S.O.T.A. fireball unit the image will render in around 5 minutes. If rendering presents a problem, the pre-rendered image is available for download on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Dense fog in the morning gave way to a brighter afternoon here at Old Fractal Central on Thursday. FOTD -- February 23, 2006 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Yesterday's image was a scene in East Valley of a midget on the main stem of the Mandelbrot set. Today's un-named image is a scene in Seahorse Valley of the same midget. It's a rather unusual scene -- a midget surrounded by an oval rather than a circular pattern. The color palette, with its overwhelming reds is a bit unusual also. After giving the image careful consideration for a second or two, I decided to let it go un-named. The rating of a 6 seems about right. The render time of just under 5 minutes on my semi-operational fractal machine is fast enough. A morning with wet snow was followed by a cold, dreary afternoon here at Old Fractal Central on Wednesday. The fractal cats did not approve of this turn of events and demanded reparations in the form of extra tuna. When the tuna was delivered, they settled down for a long sleep. My day was again very busy, a trend that will likely continue for a few more months. The next quickie FOTD will appear in 24 hours. FOTD -- February 22, 2006 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The time grows ever nearer to switch home base from the familiar but deteriorating Old Fractal Central location to the New Fractal Central with its unknown potential. The exact date of transition has not yet been determined, but as things stand now, it will be sometime between April 1 and May 31. Today's image in the Mandelbrot set is good enough to earn a rating of 7, which is something for an image to be proud of, especially at a time when ratings are scarce. I could have given the image a name, but I decided not to. The scene is located in the East Valley of a tiny midget on the negative stem of the M-set. The midget is located fairly close to the point where the stem joins the main body of the set, which is why the image is filled with so much sandy chaos. On my high-speed fireball computer the parameter file runs in 10 seconds. The tired old computer chugs along on the calculation for over 2-3/4 minutes. The image downloads from the FOTD web site in around 1 minute via dial-up, and in a few seconds via broadband. FOTD -- February 21, 2006 (Un-Rated, Un-Named) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I'm back . . . on schedule of course, and all is well. The great and not so great fractals keep coming. In fact I can't shut them off. Today's image was created by taking just plain Z and mixing in the tiniest bit of Z^(-99) before adding C. The parent fractal resembles a bulls-eye ready to be eclipsed by a flat disk. The actual fractal image for today is located near the center of the bulls-eye, and near the eclipsing disk. As has so often been the case recently, I gave the image neither name nor rating. These are subjective things, and I gave them too little effort to assign meaningful names or numbers to them. But the render time is quite objective. It is a bit over 17 minutes on my worn out old machine, which BTW might soon be put out to pasture and replaced by a faster unit. Seventeen minutes is more than 1/3,000,000 of a person's entire lifetime, so to save the lives of fractal fans, the completed image has been posted to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> from where it may quickly be downloaded, thereby saving and perhaps lengthening the lives of fractal fans everywhere. The coldest weather of the season moved into Fractal Central over the weekend, keeping the fractal cats well confined. The Sunday temperature of +8F -12C was far too chilly for delicate cats, and even for most hardy people. The not-so-dynamic duo spent most of their time watching the birds huddled around the chimney pot of the house next door, trying to steal a bit of heat. With so much work to be done, I had no trouble keeping busy. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours -- unless something unexpected arises, that is.
