FOTD -- June 16, 2004 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Sorry for the lateness, but other things needed to be done. The formula behind today's fractal combines various parts of negative Z^(1.1) and Z^(-0.9), then adds (1/C). The resulting parent fractal is a reasonably pure Mandelbrot set, with numerous slices of fractal debris to the southwest. Today's fractal scene is located in one of these slices. It is rare to see such a near-perfect circle of elements surrounding a midget, unless one dives to an extreme magnitude. I have emphasized the circular elements of the scene and named the image "Discus". The image is unusual enough to earn its rating of 7. When the render time of 3-3/4 minutes is figured in, the overall value equals a very respectful 183. The few drops of rain that fell in the early evening did not deter them from their enjoymemt. They came inside at sunset fully satisfied. Today is so far a repeat. It's a first approximation/proof of concept only, it's buggy as all hell and the UI isn't exactly great or intuitive. You can find it at: http://www.clothcat.org/scratch/fractint.iso After you boot, you'll want options 1, 1, 2 at the three menus...eventually I want to remove so many menus, that will depend on me having longer than a spare half hour though :) Then "cd FRACTINT" and run "fractint.exe" The FRACTINT directory is just a totally clean unzip of the distribution of 20.0 from spanky, it might be sane to chage that at some point. Some of the available resolutions crash the machine, although most of the testing I've done has been in VMWare, so don't take that as gospel since it does some weird funky stuff with odd resolutions. Copies of Fractal Creations

I have been lurking on this list for years. From July 1991 until August 1994 I wrote a monthly column called Â‘Frenzied FractalsÂ’ in the excellent magazine published by the local users group. Then I began a new busy job and was less than impressed when the editors often arbitrarily changed what I had written, dropped illustrations and failed to return some photos that I had paid good money for. After /Fractal Creations/, 2nd edition, came out in 1993 I tried in vain to get a copy. On 22 March 1997 I received a reply from Tim Wegner, then with a different address, saying: 'Hi Barry, good to hear from you. Â… [the 2nd edition of Fractal Creations] Great book, my best, now sadly out of print.' On 1 Jan 1999 Amazon.com confirmed my order for a second-hand copy of/ Fractal Creations//Book, CD-ROM, Disk and 3-D Glasses - Timothy Wegner, Mark Peterson; price currently unknown (Out of print; availability varies) It seems that a few copies are still around. Especially as I am now retired and have more time, I would dearly love to get a new or second-hand copy. FOTD -- June 15, 2004 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows what happens when 1.5 parts of Z^(-1.15) are combined with 1.5 parts of negative Z^(0.85) and (1/C) is added. The resulting parent fractal features a stretched-out main bay edged with the expected out-of-proportion buds. Today's scene is located near the tip of a filament attached to a small bud on the southern shoreline of the main bay. The scene was rendered with the outside set to 'tdis' rather than the standard 'iter'. Doing this gives interest to the otherwise large areas of flat color. The image is one of those rare ones that needed almost no color tweaking, which is a lucky break, considering how busy things are here at Fractal Central. I named the image "Recursive Rosebuds". I like the sound of the phrase, which is also a fitting description of the picture. The rating of a 7 appears justified, and, combined with the render time of 6-1/2 minutes, gives an overall value of 106. But being very bright cats, they waited until late afternoon when it grew cooler before venturing into the yard. After a pleasant evening, they came indoors at sunset, quite satisfied. This morning it looks as though the day will be a repeat, though today there is a chance that rain will spoil their outing. We'll see what happens. For me, the work is what will happen. FOTD 14-06-04 (Disconnected Diversion [6])

FOTD -- June 14, 2004 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Things are still quite busy here at Fractal Central, but not so busy that I lack time for the FOTD. I see thoughts of a Fractint CD circulating on the list. And I see ideas about what might be included on the disk. I am fully in favor of such a disk. If one were realized, I would certainly want a copy. But I fear that if such a project were begun, even with the best intent, the project would go the way of the FOTD CD, which has been on the drawing board for at least three years, but which I have yet to finish. All I can say is 'the best of luck with the project'. I hope my outlook for the likelihood of a successful completion of the Fractint CD is wrong. Today's fractal image lies in some scattered debris near the shoreline of the main bay of its parent. It is another of my 'evaporated' fractals, with the blank screen brought to life with the 'bof61' inside fill. I named the image "Disconnected Diversion". The name has a rather pleasant sound, with a hint of the unusual. I have rated the image at a 6, mostly because of the unusually strong color effect. The overall value comes in at a respectable 122. The most convenient way to see the image is to download it from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> It rained all day Friday here at Fractal Central. Saturday was sunny; Sunday was cloudy. The fractal cat duo did not know what to make of these confusing conditions, and simply tried to enjoy things the way they were. A bit of tuna was needed on Friday however to bring their moods up to average. Today could best be described as unsettled. It might turn sunny; it might rain. Who knows what the duo will make of it. For me, the work is temporarily caught up, but with a big new customer to satisfy, this could quickly change. Until next time, take care, and keep searching the sky for fractals. Deep ZooMs ? I have already a couple made (full screen resolution), and am currently rendering a third. They may or may not be what you are looking for. Check out the "Universe viddies" at: http://www.fractal-animation.net/index.html My animation programs work up to a little beyond the arbitrary precision limit; beyond that I use an autokey script. However, after about E+32 the images start to jump around and get distorted. Can't go further. Wonder why that is ... Stay Amazed! ' JoTz

Fractalnauts: I have the books (Fractal Creations, 2nd ed., Tim Wegner & Bert Tyler, and Fractals for Windows, Wegner, Peterson, Tyler, Branderhorst) as well as the original software (CD and disk) that came with them. Also have Zillions of PAR, FRM etc. Fractint files on CD been collectiong for years. I would be happy to contribute to this project should it go foreward, but I'm not sure how to, unless I can make copies of the software and send it by email or post it on my web site.
