FOTD 18-01-04 (The Wheel of Life [7])

FOTD -- January 18, 2004 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene in the Z^(2.003)+C Mandeloid. This is the same fractal that holds the curious Julia rectangle that I sometimes use as an interesting FOTD object. But that rectangle exists at the ground level of the formula, which can be seen by setting the real(p1) parameter of today's MandelbrotBC1 formula to 2.003, and the real(p2) parameter to 3.14159... The actual parent fractal of today's image lies 1040 levels up the logarithmic hyper-spiral. Such an extreme height is necessary because the exponent of Z is so close to an integer value. This closeness causes the parent fractal to rotate and change very slowly as the value of real(p2) is raised. At a height of 1040, the parent fractal is rotated 180 degrees, a position that has the main stem, which has split into infi- nite flinders, facing east, and the East Valley, which has become smeared out, facing west. Interesting things happen at both locations. Today, we examine the things that happen on the east-facing main stem. I have chosen to explore the area immediately behind the large midget. In this area, we find what looks like a grid of railroad tracks, with midgets located where the switches would lie. Today's scene is located in the basin of attraction of a larger midget, which in turn is located in the basin of the largest midget on the main stem. And BTW, this large midget has been transformed into something that must be seen to be believed. To liven the image I have rendered it with the outside set to 'fmod' and the proximity set to the default 0.01. When editing the parameter file, I entered the proximity value by hand, though I doubt that this was necessary. While searching for a name, I was thinking of the mysteries of existence, which probably inspired the name "The Wheel of Life". The name is justified by the filimentary circular features surrounding the central midget. The rating of 7 combined with the render time of just under 4 minutes gives an overall value of 183. A good way to increase this value is to download the completed GIF image from Paul's web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Saturday was cloudy and chilly here at Fractal Central, with a high temperature of only freezing. The snow held off until nightfall, giving the duo of cats ample time to wander the yard in search of adventure. They found none, and peacefully retired to their beds at the end of the day. Today is starting most un- pleasant, with an inch of slush on the ground and a cold rain falling. It's a good thing I have tuna in stock. My precognition now tells me that in 24 hours I will return with the next FOTD. So until then, take care, and either see the light or remain in the dark. The challenge is how to recognize the actual light. ATI 9700 with Catalyst 3.10 using VESA modes in Fractint

I have been using Catalyst 3.08 drivers for my ATI 9700 AIW graphics card under XP. I could use fractint but whenever I'd exit I'd have to reset the display properties resolution to fix my corrupted screen back in XP. This weekend I updated to Catalyst 3.10 drivers and now when I exit fractint after using VESA mode drivers the XP screen is not corrupted on exit. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. [Fractint] On Bill Jemison's Reply and Jim Muth's Precognition Comments

>From Osher Doctorow Ph.D. I want to thank Bill Jemison for his interest in my postings, and to assure him and other readers that I will try to not over-bombard Fractint with posts far disproportionate to the number of people who are interested. Also, I will try to make postings usually intuitively clear for non-experts in the field(s). On Jim Muth's Precognition comments of Jan. 17, I think that it is an excellent sign of Creative Genius that he is courageous enough to discuss Non-Mainstream ideas. My own opinion is that what some people interpret as Precognition is probably more Telepathy or Clairvoyance (respectively receiving auditory versus visual mental images in one's mind which originate from others' minds). Jim, I would guess, picked up the plotters' thoughts, and I'd suggest trying to compare his location on 9-11 or 9-10 with those of the plotters or else those of people or agencies who might have had an indirect connection to the plotters via (a) support or (b) surveillance. It is even conceivable that Jim picked up NYPD's surveillance of somebody indirectly involved in 9-11 or (crazy as it may sound) even somebody who could explain the anthrax attacks and the deaths of the Vietnamese immigrant in the Bronx and the older woman in Connecticut who died from anthrax poisoning. We run into the difficulty with Telepathy and Clairvoyance that I have run into with Non-Mainstream ideas in Mainstream Mathematics and Physics and other sciences/professions, namely, people who don't experience certain things are very unlikely to believe them. This is especially a difficulty in teaching. I try to teach my college classes in Mathematics with emphasis on most students rather than "exceptionally bright" students partly for this reason. The exceptions often have experienced Mathematics from parents who are teachers, engineers, physicists, and so on, but the majority of students usually have parents who weren't taught well and didn't learn much in mathematics. This disagrees with the way in which most Research Universities teach mathematics, and also with the way in which many Teaching Universities or their faculty teach mathematics. Fractals probably relate to Telepathy and Clairvoyance, in my opinion, through their self-similar Expansion-Contraction property, since I think that Consciousness-Perception-Memory also have (wavelike or field-like) Expansion-Contraction properties. When we awaken, our perceptions and Consciousness and Memory subjectively expands and probably also do objectively via various instruments that can monitor brain activity. When we go to sleep, there is a subjective and probably objective contraction in Consciousness and Perceptions and Memory although during sleep various cycles like REM are known to involve differing degrees of dreaming and so on. FOTD -- January 17, 2004 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In yesterday's discussion I wrote about precognition. When I wrote it, I was undecided whether to say that I believe in precognition or to claim that I know it exists. I ended up stating that, because of personal experiences, I am convinced that the ability to foresee future events does exist. This is one step short of saying that I *know* it exists. In order to claim that precognition *does* exist as a proven fact, I would need to display the ability to do things like predicting winning lottery numbers at will, an ability I do not have. I would have been more accurate if I had stated that I am convinced that, on rare occasions, we receive hints of great (and not-so-great) events which have not yet happened. The point in question is whether these hints are actual information from the future, which has somehow moved backward in time and worked its way into our awareness, or whether we merely give undue attention to real events that happen by chance to resemble fantasies we have recently experienced. After considering my own experiences on the seven nights of September 4 to September 10, 2001, I have decided that somehow, information of what would happen on the morning of 9-11 did somehow enter my awareness on those earlier nights. I have no idea of a mechanism through which this might have happened. The important thing is that, because of my experience, I am convinced that our relation to the four-dimensional space-time world around us is far more intimate than the "I'm in here and the world is out there" relation presented by our senses. I am not yet ready to take seriously the pseudo-mystical phrase 'become one with...', but I am now convinced that the hard skeptics, while keeping a thread of reason in a world drowning in nonsense, are still missing something big. And I would not be surprised if fractals were somehow involved. Today's image is a scene in the fractal that results when Z^(-2.5) is subtracted from (1/Z) and (1/C) is added. This parent fractal is a double-lobed thing with X-axis symmetry, consisting of a central area of chaos with a zig-zag filament arching out to the east. Today's scene is located in the vicinity of a larger midget on this filament. The image has been rendered with the outside set to 'tdis'. I named it "Iterative Toytown" for no good reason. The name merely reflects the frame of mind I was in when I thought of it. I have inserted the mathtolerance entry into the parameter file because of the high magnitude of the image, which might cause the image to render at the wrong magnitude if the resolution were increased beyond 640x480. After careful thought, I rated the image at a 7, which is above FOTD average and, combined with a render time of 5 minutes, gives the image an overall value of 140. The value can be raised to 700 or so by eliminating the wait for the image to render. This can be done by letting Paul render the image and by then downloading it from his web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The Friday weather was cold here at Fractal Central, but with a temperature of 28F -2C and lighter winds, it was not as cold as recent days. The fractal cats must have agreed. They spent over an hour in the yard, investigating the things they had not checked in several days. When the day ended, they settled comfortably for a peaceful evening. I have only a small bit of work to finish before today will be totally free. What will be done with that free time however remains to be determined. Regardless of what happens, I'll be back in 24 hours with another fractal. If readers aren't interested in this first post, I'll take the question and theory else- where. QUESTION. Are fractals Deformations, and if so, are they in particular Quantum Deformations? The Theory involved is Deformation Theory. If you look under the key- word Deformation on the internet, you'll find hundreds of articles in many different fields and disciplines and quite a few definitions of Deformation that seem to have nothing in common. My interest is to unify these different theories but in a Simple way and an Intuitive way that doesn't require years of study but applies almost directly to fields like Fractals. Deformation intuitively is "change". Unlike the concept of the "infinitesimal" in calculus, which is a "very small change," a Deforma- tion can be large or small or intermediate, but it is specified in some way both globally and locally. Deformations have revolutionized Quantum Theory and Mathematics, and for example Quantization in Quantum Theory is presently of two main types: Deformation Quantization and Geometric Quantization (look them up as keywords on the internet). The simplest example of Deformation is probably also one of the most fundamental in mathematics and physics: Non-Euclidean Geometry (NEG for short here). NEG is the Geometry of curved ("bent") space while Euclidean Geometry (EG for short here) is the Geometry of flat space. So we get from Eucidean Geometry to Non-Euclidean Geometry by the very Simple and Intuitive idea of Bending or Curving something. What's so great about that? Well, Non-Euclidean Geometry was discovered in the 1800s by Gauss, Riemann, Lobachewski, and Bolyai, and both Mathematics and Physics were fundamentally changed afterward. Physics used NEG as the basic tool (in what is called tensor formulation) for General Relativity of Einstein, and General Relativity is in turn involved either in classical or modified forms in Quantum Gravity and Superstring and other Quantum-Related research. Before getting to Fractals, I'll give one more example of "what's so great about that". "Very small" Deformations were discovered as "Infinitesimals" by Sir Isaac Newton and Leibniz in the 1600s, although they actually built upon pioneering work of Pierre De Fermat of 1600s France and Archimedes of later Ancient Greece. In other words, they are the essence of Calculus. Mathematics and Physics and other Sciences were not the same after Calculus. They changed fundamentally. Yet, like Non-Euclidean Geometry, Calculus was a type of Deformation, both very Simple and very Intuitive when formulated as Deformations (not so simple when presented in complicated textbooks designed for Math or Physics majors who have mastered many prerequisite courses). Most of us, I think, have an intuition that Fractals and Chaos are as Revolutionary as anything around, so a "natural" choice is to ask whether they can be regarded as Deformations of anything. Fractals change the shapes of objects by Self-Similar Contractions. In simple language, the original shape of a "large" object is shrunken into many smaller copies of that object, and that is the Change involved. The new, smaller objects are similar to the origin ones. Everywhere you look, so to speak, there are smaller copies of the original object - smaller and smaller on smaller and smaller scales. In Computer and Mathematics language, the way in which the original object changes is kept track of and specified by Iteration and repetition of the previous operation (the opera- tion often called Composition in Mathematics). What could "Deformation" give FractInt that current methods don't give? In my opinion, it will probably eventually yield Quantum Fractals and Quantum Knowledge-Information from a different route than current Quantum Computer and Quantum Information theories. That route, as I indicated above, is through Deformation Quantization among other methods. But as important as that, it will probably enable us to understand the relation- ship between "shrinking" large objects on the human scale and the nature of the apparently very diferent microscopic Quantum world where waves or fields and particles have a curiously different nature. If no reader is interested, I'll take this thread elsewhere, and I'll have no hard feelings since I won't give up my interests. Hopefully, readers won't have hard feelings about being disturbed from their other interests in this posting.
