FOTD 21-01-04 (What the . . . [5])

FOTD -- January 21, 2004 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: For today's FOTD I tried the trick of the past two days on the quartic Mandeloid. This trick worked quite well on the quadratic and cubic Mandeloids, leading to some very inter- esting images, but it produced only near-total chaos when I applied it to the quartic Mandeloid. A quick glance at today's image shows a scene that has no business being in a fractal with a formula of Z^(4.003)+C. The image is totally disorganized. Where is the 4,16,64... symmetry that should be there? What are all the discontinuities doing in the picture? Forget about unimportant things like the meaning of existence; these fractal mysteries are the questions that need to be answered. When I saw the image, I thought, "What the...", and the name stuck. Unfortunately, we will have no third consecutive 8-rated FOTD. Today's image rates only a 5, which gives an overall value of 53 when combined with the render time of 9-1/2 minutes. The value may be increased by downloading the finished GIF image from Paul's web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Another very cold day Tuesday here at Fractal Central kept the cats safely ensconced indoors. The high temperature reached only 28F -2C, which was far too cold for their sensitive ears. But they had a pleasant day anyway, resting by the heat. Today is another repeat. FOTD 14-01-04 (The Unseen Squid [5])

FOTD -- January 14, 2004 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: When I stepped back to view today's image from a distance, I was immediately reminded of an undersea scene, where a squid or octopus has been threatened and has released a cloud of black ink to conceal its escape. Since I saw no actual squid in the image, I named it "The Unseen Squid". (I doubt that a Mandel- brot 'molecule' could pass for a squid.) All in all, it's a very traditional fractal, created with the MandelbrotMix2 formula and rendered with the outside set to 'iter' and the inside set to zero. The image has the appearance of being very close to the escape radius, but this appearance is the actual nature of the fractal at this particular point. Increasing the bailout by entering a large number as the imag(p3) parameter has very little effect on the image. A large bailout radius will not evaporate the image because its formula contains a positive power of Z. When rating the image, I studied it for several minutes, trying to find a reason to rate it at a 6. I found nothing in it worth more than a rating of a very-average 5. Combined with a render time of 11-1/2 minutes, this gives an overall value of 43. This value can be raised considerably by letting Paul render the image and downloading the finished product from his web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The temperature reached 48F 9C here at Fractal Central Tuesday afternoon, though the clouds, which came and went, kept conditions from being ideal. The fractal cats had as good a day as possible in the yard, considering the less-than-ideal weather. This morning is much colder, and a snowfall is moving in. The cats' moods will suffer, I fear. My day will be adequate once I finish the waiting work. And an adequate day is about the most one can ask for. Tomorrow, I will return with another fractal of a quality yet to be deter- mined. Fractint as a background process?

Is there anyway to run Fractint as a background process in XP? Different people have reported better luck with different video cards, but the only way I know to do what you want is to run Virtual PC. Microsoft recently bought Virtual PC from Connectix and just released 'Microsoft Virtual PC 2004' (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/) I am running the last Connectix version and I don't know what Microsoft has changed. Anyway, Virtual PC emulates hardware in software (using DirectX) therefore allowing you to run other operating systems on top of Windows, e.g. DOS, OS/2, Linux, etc. I can run Fractint, as well as several DOS games, in a window or full screen on XP. There are 2 problems with it however. First, fractint runs quite a bit slower than in native DOS. Second, Virtual PC is expensive, about $120.00, although you can download a fully functional 45 day free trial. Actually, they lowered the price - Connectix charged $200. Nick

FOTD 20-01-04 (The Cubic Trinity [8])

FOTD -- January 20, 2004 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is the second consecutive one to rate an 8, though its slower render time cuts its overall value to 59. I did need to take a slightly liberal view of the image to reach that rating however, but it is still an unusually interesting sample of a midget in an almost-cubic fractal. The name I chose for the image, "The Cubic Trinity", has nothing to do with religious belief. It merely reflects the fact that, in the image, everything comes in powers of 3. While yesterday's FOTD image examines the negative real axis of the Z^(2.003)+C Mandeloid as it appears 1040 levels up the spiral, today's image looks at the negative real axis of the Z^(3.003)+C figure at the same level. Not unexpectedly, much of the same type of detail appears. We have the same features resembling skeletal hands, and the same barely noticeable lack of symmetry. The breaks that do appear are arranged symmetrically around the midget so that they become a regular part of the pattern. Indeed, it takes a bit of searching to find the places where the symmetry breaks, but a careful search will reveal that all corners of the midget's basin are not quite identical. The render time of 13 minutes is slow for an image that might be a bit exaggerated. That wait may be eliminated by downloading the finished GIF file from: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> With the temperature hovering around 25F -4C all afternoon, the day was far too cold for the delicate whiskers and paws of the fractal cats. They tested the outdoors only a few minutes before deciding that warmth was better than adventure. A bit of tuna kept them happy. Today is starting sunny and just as cold. The cats will likely have a similar day. I have a bit of work to finish before starting the search for the next fractal, but I can finish that work with the speed of a photon. I also have an urge to treat myself to some junk food at the golden arches 1/2 mile down the road. If I survive, I'll return in 24 hours with the next FOTD image. Could we possibly have three consecutive images that rate an 8? Check back here in 24 hours to find out. Regarding Deformation, I proved yesterday on sci.stat.math that: 1) P(A-->B) - P(B-->A) = P(B) - P(A) < = P(B/A) - P(A/B) if and only if A and B are statistically positive quadrant dependent, that is to say P(AB) > = P(A) times P(B). Let me translate this into English (those who want to know the technicalities I'll briefly discuss at the end). Inequality (1) says the the Rare Event difference in the probable influence of A on B and the probable influence of B on A reduces to the probability of B minus the probability of A and this in turn is less than or equal to the Fairly Frequent Event Conditional (Bayesian) probability of B given A minus the Conditional probability of A given B provided that A and B probably increase together rather than being unrelated or going in opposite directions. This in turn describes an "avalanch" in probable influence somewhat similar to the way in which Rasputin's influence over Tsar Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra in Russia resulted largely in their unpopularity and ultimately largely in the Russian (Bolshevik) Revolution. The discrepancy in Rare Event probable influence, when it increases much, triggers a discrepancy in Fairly Frequent Event analogs or "given" type probabilities. They aren't pure analogs because "given" isn't the same idea as influence, but they're the closest that Conditional Probability comes to formulating probable influence. For those interested in the math, P(B/A) = P(AB)/P(A) for P(A) not 0, and P(A-->B) = 1 + P(AB) - P(A). The iteration continues until the maximum iteration count is reached. This means you need to play with the inside= options to get an image (all points are inside the set). You can verify this by setting inside=maxiter and then calling up the palette editor after the image is generated (this will be possible if you are using Xfractint version 20.3, although editting the palette is still essentially broken). There are a lot of formulae that produce a blank screen at the default settings. This formula was probably written while using the integer math (not available in Xfractint). Because of the reduced dynamic range, the integer math artifacts produce more interesting images. Jonathan

FOTD 19-01-04 (Quadropod [8])

FOTD -- January 19, 2004 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's FOTD is the second one I have found with the newly released Fractint version 20.3. Other than a few minor glitches in the evolver and view-window, which have been corrected, I have noticed no difference in the program performance. Of course, some of the changes involve features I rarely use. In yesterday's FOTD we examined stem area of the Z^(2.003)+C Mandeloid as it appears 1040 levels up the logarithmic hyper- spiral. Today we turn our attention to the west, and examine the 'East Valley' area of the Mandeloid. Unlike the main stem, which simply breaks into infinite bits and pieces, the East Valley area smears out into a broad flat wedge with jagged edges. Today's image is located in a narrow band of chaos on the southern edge of the wedge. I named the image "Quadropod". It reminds me of some fantastic animal with four translucent arms. Perhaps I should have named it 'Study', since I spent so much time studying the background colors and trying to create a smoothly blended gradient with no visible bands, a challenging task in GIF format with its meager 256 colors. Though the result is not perfect, I feel I came close enough to the goal of perfect smoothness to rate the image at an honest 8, which, combined with the render time of just under 11 minutes, gives an overall value of 73. (To find the overall value, the image rating is multiplied by 100 and the result divided by the render time in minutes, making the render time like the money one must pay to buy an item. The shorter the render time, the more value for the money spent.) As always, the render time may be eliminated entirely by down- loading the finished image from Paul's web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The cold rain continued most all day Sunday here at Fractal Central, changing to a few snowflakes just before ending around sunset. The high temperature never made it above 36F 2C, which is far too chilly for the cats' fractal ears. The duo spent the day sleeping by the heat. Today is starting sunny, but it is very cold again. We'll see how the cats make out. My day looks as though it will be notably average. Hopefully, the fractal I find this evening will be notably above average.
