Writers Brenda Miller and Teresa Jordan will read from their works for the City Art Reading Series on April 13th at 7:00 P.M. at the Salt Lake City Library’s Main Branch. . Brenda Miller is the author of Season of the Body (Sarabande Books, 2002) and co-author of Tell it Slant: Writing and Shaping Creative Nonfiction (McGraw-Hill, 2003). Her newest collection of essays, Blessing of the Animals, was released by Eastern Washington University Press on February 1, 2009. Her work has received five Pushcart Prizes and has been published in many journals, including Fourth Genre, Creative Nonfiction, The Sun, Utne Reader, The Georgia Review, and The Missouri Review. Miller’s last collection includes two Pushcart Prize winning essays (“Blessing of the Animals” and “Raging Waters”). "Table of Figures" was named a "Notable Essay" in The Best American Essays, 2009 and selected for inclusion in The Best Creative Nonfiction, Vol. 3, by W.W. Norton. A book of new and selected essays is forthcoming as is a collaborative book on spiritual practices in writing. Miller is a Professor of English at Western Washington University and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Bellingham Review. She lives in Bellingham, WA, with her dog Abbe and her cat Madrona, both of whom are acting as muses for her next book. Teresa Jordan was raised as part of the fourth generation on a ranch in the Iron Mountain country of southeastern Wyoming. An author and visual artist, her books include the ranching memoir, Riding the White Horse Home; the classic study of women who work on the land and in the rodeo, Cowgirls: Women of the American West; and two illustrated journals, Field Notes from the Grand Canyon: Raging River, Quiet Mind, and Field Notes from Yosemite: Apprentice to Place, as well as other books. She lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, with her husband, musician and public radio producer Hal Cannon. The event is free and open to the public. Reading from Anthology Fragile Constructions: from the Utah Independent Living Center Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch 210 East 400 South Salt Lake City UT 84111 Wednesday March 16th 7:00—9:00 P.M. City Art will host readers from the Utah Independent Living Center for a celebration of their Anthology Fragile Constructions on March 16th at 7:00 P.M. at the Salt Lake City Public Library Main Branch. This is the fourth anthology of work to come from members of a writing workshop at the Utah Independent Living Center in Salt Lake City . The workshop, open to anyone with disabilities, began in June, 2001, under the sponsorship of Art Access/VSA Arts of Utah, and was originally to continue for six weeks. The workshop was such a positive experience for both the participants and myself as teacher, that we have continued to meet weekly until the present. This anthology is a sampler of work by participants, not a comprehensive collection. The writers in this anthology have very different backgrounds. Their education ranges from high school drop out to masters degree in business. Some have disabilities that prevent them from being able to write down the works themselves—they have to dictate it and have someone else write it down. A couple can’t see the work on the page after it is written down; they need to have someone read it back to them in order to revise. Their disabilities stem from a diversity of causes including being hit by a drunk driver, gunshot wounds, brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, spinal bifida, paralysis, cerebral palsy, autism, diabetes, and long-term memory loss. When he did come to—he had to relearn to speak and walk, but he remembered how to play the saxophone. He started writing because for the first months of his recovery he couldn’t talk fluently enough to communicate his thoughts. ORLA ZABRISKIE: She grew up living in the National Park system with her family. She has cerebral palsy. She received a degree from BYU in Special Education. She rides the public buses in her wheelchair with her oxygen tank attached to the back. SHAUNA CLAUSEN grew up in Maine , and graduated from Waterville High Schoolin 1993. She has diabetes and osteo arthritis, and was in a wheelchair for many years, but through determination and hard work now gets around with only the aid of a walker—which she calls a good friend. She participated in the 2010 Run and Roll, completed 3 rounds of the race with the help of her walker. MARK SANTINI is from Maryland, and has been in Utah for 10 years now. He has Spinal Bifida. He writes “to get my thoughts and feelings out.” TOM HURST: “Even after five years at the University of Utah(where he received a masters degree in business) I enjoy coming to classes at the Independent Living Center .” Tom was diagnosed with MS at 19 after returning from Canada on an LDS mission. Mark Wagenaar is the 2011 winner of the Felix Pollak Prize, for his manuscript ‘Voodoo Inverso.’ He graduated from the University of Virginia’s MFA program—where he won an Academy of American Poets Prize—and is a recent transplant to Salt Lake City, where he's just begun a Ph.d in poetry at the University of Utah. He has two chapbooks forthcoming from Finishing Line Press & Pudding House. He is a winner of the Yellowwood Poetry Prize, & his poems appear widely, including most recently in Subtropics, the SouthernReview, the New England Review,/nor, theAntioch Review, 32 Poems, theNorth American Review, theAmerican Literary Review, Crab Orchard Review, Tar River Poetry, & Poetry East. Rob Carneyis the author of two books—Weather Report (Somondoco P, 2006) and Boasts, Toasts, and Ghosts (Pinyon P, 2003), both winners of the Utah Book Award for Poetry—and two chapbooks: New Fables, Old Songs (Dream Horse P, 2003) and This Is One Sexy Planet (Frank Cat P, 2005). University of Colorado poet Julie Carr and poet Shira Dentz will read from their works at the Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch on Wednesday March 2nd at 7:00 as part of the City Art Reading Series. Julie Carr’s first collection of poetry, Mead: An Epithalamion (University of Georgia Press, 2004) was selected by Cole Swensen for the University of Georgia Contemporary Poetry Prize. Her other collections include Sarah — of Fragments and Lines (Coffee House Press, 2010), a National Poetry Series winner; 100 Notes on Violence (Ahsahta Press, 2010), selected by Rae Armantrout for the 2009 Sawtooth Poetry Prize; and Equivocal (Alice James Books, 2007). Her study of Victorian poetry and poetics is forthcoming from Dalkey Archive. Carr is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is the co-publisher, alongside her husband, Tim Roberts, of Counterpath Press. She lives in Denver, Colorado and has three children. Shira Dentz is the author of a book of poems, black seeds on a white dish, a chapbook, Leaf Weather, and another full-length collection, door of thin skins, that is forthcoming. Her poems have appeared widely in journals such as APR, The Iowa Review, jubilat, and New American Writing, and have been featured on NPR, Poetry Daily, and Verse Daily. She is a recipient of an Academy of American Poets’ Prize, The Poetry Society of America’s Lyric Poem and Cecil Hemley Memorial Awards, Electronic Poetry Review’s Discovery Award, andPainted Bride Quarterly’s Poetry Prize. William H. Coles and Bill Coles Reading Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch 210 East 400 South Salt Lake City UT 84111 Wednesday February 9th 7:00—9:00 P.M. City Art presents a night of two William Coles with Bill Coles and William H. Coles reading from their works at the Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch on Wednesday February 9th at 7:00 as part of the City Art Reading Series. Bill Coles is an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Utah. Born and raised in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, he has lived in Salt Lake City with his wife Joan since 1956. He has been fully retired since 2001, and has turned his interests from differential equations and mathematical ecology to becoming a writer. So far his non-scientific writings have appeared in Catalyst, City Art, Salt Lake City magazine, and—here his memory fails him—perhaps a few other places. William H. Coles, MD, MS, has had work appear in the Chattahoochee Review and Miscellany. For eight years he reviewed poetry for the Journal of the American Medical Association and won the Callenwolde Prize (Atlanta) for best poem (”Unwed Girl”). He was finalist (short story) in the William Faulkner Creative Writing (2007) Competition short listed the novel (2007), previously, placed five times as a semi-finalist for novel (2004-2010), and a finalist (2006) for short story. He won both first and second place (two stories) in the Sandhills Writers’ Competition 2006. In 2008, seven stories placed as finalists in the Faulkner Competition, one as three equivalent winners. He was a finalist in the 2010 Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction. He also wrote scripts for editorials and weekly radio segments on jazz for the NPR affiliate WBFO that were presented on air. He published Story in Literary Fiction: A Manual for Writer in 2007, and in 2008, Literary Story as an Art Form: A Text for Writers. In 2010 he published Facing Grace with Gloria and Other Stories. He won the Conrad Berens Award Competition for best film on a medical subject. He is a former ophthalmic surgeon specializing in ocular trauma who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah with his wife who is a pediatric retina surgeon and researcher. He has served as Department Chairman, State University of New York at Buffalo; Regent for the American College of Surgeons, President Association of University Professors in Ophthalmology. He has held academic appointments at Louisiana State University, Medical University of South Carolina, Emory University School of Medicine, and State University of New York at Buffalo where he is presently Professor Emeritus. He has lectured internationally on surgery, Georgian antique furniture, and jazz and recently presented the lectures, "How Humor Works in Literary Fiction" and "Narration in Literary Fiction: Making the Right Choices" at Kenyon College in 2009. Writer Scott Carrier and poet Katharine January will read from their works at the Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch on Wednesday February 2nd at 7:00 as part of the City Art Reading Series. Scott Carrier is an independent radio producer and writer who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. His radio stories have been broadcast on All Things Considered, This American Life, and The Savvy Traveler. His print stories have been published in Harper’s, Esquire, and Rolling Stone. A collection of his stories, Running After Antelope, will be published in March of 2001 by Counterpoint. Katherine January was born in New Mexico and grew up on a dairy farm in Northern Vermont. She put in academic time at Tufts University, the University of Vermont, and Georgia State University. She farms and writes in Bountiful, Utah where she lives with her good husband Michael and her bad dog Charley. In her spare time she works as a psychologist in a healthcare setting. She recently finished a children’s story, The Curmudgeon Under the Stairs, and is at work on a second volume of poetry. Poems have previously appeared in The Shenandoah Valley Writers’ Guild Showcase and The Potomac Guardian. The Blue Giraffe is her first full-length collection. Writers Robert Glick and Mike Dorrell will Read for City Art Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch 210 East 400 South Salt Lake City UT 84111 Wednesday January 19th 7:00—9:00 P.M. Writers Robert Glick and Mike Dorrell will read from their work at the Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch on Wednesday January 19th at 7:00. Robert Glick is a PhD student in Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Utah and fiction editor of the Amsterdam-based literary journal Versal. Recent and forthcoming publications include Denver Quarterly, Black Warrior Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, Bateau, and Fourteen Hills. In 2010 he won The Normal School Normal Prize for fiction and the Copper Nickel Fiction Contest. He likes breaking things. Mike Dorrell is best known as a playwright. His most recent plays include the upcoming TALKING WALES 2 for Utah Contemporary Theatre and a short play, THE IRRIGATION MURDER, as part of The Salt Lake Acting Company's WATER PROJECT in April. Last year, he took part in Plan- B Theatre Company's SLAM, wrote and acted in TALKING WALES for Utah Contemporary Theatre, and had a reading of a comedy, ART FOR ART'S SAKE at SLAC. He is the author of over a dozen plays for stage, radio, and television including PENNY GAFFS AND ANGEL PLACES, PICTURES OF THE FLOATING WORLD, CHANGE, THE CELTIC CROSS AND BURNING THE ARC for BBC Radio, EAST OF MAIN STREET for Avon Touring Company, and RISE OF THE OLD CLOUD for Paines Plough . Born in Swansea, Wales, Mike was educated at the Universities of London and Bristol and holds an M.A. in British and American Literature from The University of Utah. Currently, Mike is the Dramaturg for The Salt Lake Acting Company where his specialty is the development of new work. He has taught at Westminster College and The University of Utah. Writers Brian Kubarycz and DeNorris Bradley will read from their work at the Salt Lake City Public Library on Wednesday January 12th at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Brian Kubarycz writes and paints in Salt Lake City, where he teaches Intellectual Traditions for the Honors College at the University of Utah. His work appears in The Quarterly, Black Warrior Review, Unsaid, New York Tyrant and, most recently, NOÖ. DeNorris Bradley will be reading from his manuscripts, 'Cairo Morning Glory' and 'The Holler.' The poems take on the voices of, Women, ghosts, and the dispossessed. DeNorris grew up in North and South Carolina with paternal relatives strewn throughout the southern United States, and maternal relatives in the southern Caribbean, Haiti and Trinidad Tobago. He has lived in Salt Lake City for 18 years and earned a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Utah. The event is free and open to the public.
