Idaho State University Poet Cathy Peppers will read with music by Bob Picard and the poet Lillian-Yvonne Bertram will read April 18th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Cathy Peppers and Bob Picard both grew up in the Midwest but now live on a one-hundred-year-old farmstead in Southeast Idaho and teach at Idaho State University. Cathy’s poems have recently appeared in bear creek haiku and Sugar House Review and are otherwise loosely collecting in a manuscript regressing forward / love poems in middle age. Bob is a songwriter and musician performing with his band Steelhead Redd; his music is available on steelheadredd.com and iTunes. They are currently experimenting with weaving their verses together under the moniker p&p river and blues. Lillian-Yvonne Bertram has been a Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference work-study scholar, a writer-in-residence at the Montana Artists’ Refuge, and is a Cave Canem alumna. Her poetry has appeared in Black Warrior Review, Callaloo, Gulf Coast, Harvard Review, Indiana Review, Narrative Magazine, Subtropics, and other journals. She received first place in the 2011 Summer Literary Seminars poetry contest, has won the Gulf Coast Magazine Donald Barthelme Prize for Short Prose, and has received second place in Narrative Magazine’s poetry contest. Bertram is a graduate of the writing programs at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She was a 2009-2011 Gaius Charles Bolin Fellow at Williams College where she taught creative writing and literature. Her first book, But a Storm is Blowing from Paradise, won the Red Hen Press 2010 Benjamin Saltman Poetry Award, judged by Claudia Rankine. She is pursuing her PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Utah. She reads for the journals Arsenic Lobster and Quarterly West and currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, with her partner and their cat, the inimitable Hipólito Yrigoyen aka CatMonster. Poets Mike White and Jennifer Tonge to read at City Art Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch 210 East 400 South Salt Lake City UT 84111 Wednesday April 11th 7:00—9:00 P.M. Poets Mike White and Jennifer Tonge will read from their works on April 11th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Jennifer Tonge received an MFA from the University of Utah. Tonge’s poetry has been anthologized inRising Phoenix(2004) and Ravishing DisUnities: Real Ghazals in English(2000). Her poems have appeared in numerous journals, including Quarterly West, Poetry, Ploughshares, New England Review, andBellingham Review. The recipient of fellowships from the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, the MacDowell Colony, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Ucross Foundation, and the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Tonge has taught creative writing at the universities of Utah, Wisconsin, and Texas as well as at Butler University. She has served as poetry editor of Quarterly West, as president of Writers@Work, on the board of City Art, and as associate editor at Dawn Marano and Associates. Mike White has published poems in journals including The New Republic, Threepenny Review, The Iowa Review, Witness, and Poetry. He lives in Salt Lake City and teaches at the University of Utah. Her short fiction has been anthologized, and published in various periodicals including VLS, Story and Tin House. Her stories, “Hammam” and “Elvis Has Left the Building” were chosen for inclusion in Best American Short Stories of 1994 and 1998 respectively. “Hammam” was read on NPR’s “Selected Shorts” series. Her latest story, “The Last Speaker of the Language,” is just out in the fall 2011 issue of New Ohio Review/NOR. Anshaw is a past fellow of the Illinois Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. She teaches in the MFA in Writing program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She lives in Chicago and Amsterdam with her partner, Jessie Ewing. Most featured readings are followed by an open reading. Utah’s Poet Laureate Katharine Coles and Novelist Carol Anshaw will read fro their works on April 4th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Utah’s Poet Laureate Katharine Coles’ books include the novels FIRE SEASON and THE MEASURABLE WORLD and four collections of poems, FAULT, THE GOLDEN YEARS OF THE FOURTH DIMENSION, A HISTORY OF THE GARDEN, and THE ONE RIGHT TOUCH. Her fifth collection, FLIGHT, is forthcoming from Red Hen Press in 2013. Her stories, poems, and essays have appeared or are forthcoming in THE PARIS REVIEW, THE NEW REPUBLIC, THE KENYON REVIEW, IMAGE, upstreet, and POETRY, among many other journals. Her poems have been included in numerous public arts projects, including Salt Lake City's Passages Park, for which she served on the design team; and NUMBERS AND MEASURES (www.asci.org/digital2001/bliss/bliss.htm) an installation by Anna Campbell Bliss in the Leroy Cowles Mathematics Building at the University of Utah. Her ongoing collaboration with visual artist Maureen O?Hara Ure (www.art.utah.edu/arthome) has resulted in two major installations and two artist's books, BEAST and SWOON. She has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and PEN, among many other organizations; in 2010, she traveled to Antarctica to write poems under the auspices of the National Science Foundation's Antarctic Artists and Writers Program. She is on the faculty of the English Department at the University of Utah, where she teaches creative writing and literature and, with mathematician and biologist Fred Adler (www.math.utah.edu/~adler) co-directs the Utah Symposium in Science and Literature (www.scienceandliterature.org) which she originated in 2001. In 2006, she was named to a five-year term as Utah's Poet Laureate. In addition to her position at the University of Utah, she served in 2009 and 2010 as the inaugural Director of the Harriet Monroe Poetry Institute at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago. Carol Anshaw is the author of the novels Seven Moves, Aquamarine and Lucky in the Corner. She has won the Carl Sandburg, Society of Midland Authors, and Ferro-Grumley awards for fiction, and has been a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award three times. Her latest novel, Carry the One, is forthcoming from Simon and Schuster on March 6, 2012. Writers Rebecca Lindenberg and Malachi Black will read from their work on March 14th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Rebecca Lindenberg’s first poetry collection, Love: an Index, is forthcoming from McSweeney’s in 2012. She is the recipient of a 2011 National Endowment of the Arts Literature Fellowship and a 2009- 2010 Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship. Her poetry, essays and criticism appear most recently in The Best American Poetry—2011, POETRY, The Believer, 32 Poems, Conjunctions, Huffington Post, Iowa Review, Mid-American Review, No Tell Motel, Colorado Review, Denver Quarterly and elsewhere. She teaches literature and creative writing at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Malachi Black is a Vice Presidential Fellow in the University of Utah’s PhD program in English with Creative Writing. He is the author of the limited edition chapbook Echolocation (Float Press, 2010), and the forthcoming chapbook Quarantine (Argos Books). His work has appeared or is forthcoming in journals including Poetry, Boston Review, Harvard Review, and Blackbird, as well as several recent or forthcoming anthologies. A 2009 Ruth Lilly Fellow, he has also received recent fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, The MacDowell Colony, and the University of Texas at Austin’s Michener Center for Writers, where he earned his MFA. Writers Eric Freeze and Pam Balluck will read from their work on March 7th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Eric Freeze is a Canadian writer from southern Alberta. He completed a PhD in Fiction Writing at Ohio University and he has published short stories, translations, and creative nonfiction in a variety of periodicals including most recently Boston Review, Tampa Review, The Southern Review, The Normal School, and Harvard Review. In 2011, he was the recipient of a Canada Council for the Arts Award (similar to a NEA fellowship) for work on a multi-generational novel set in New Brunswick and Alberta. He currently teaches creative writing at Wabash College in Indiana. Pamela Balluck is from New York, Los Angeles, and western Montana. Her creative writing has appeared in, among other publications, the Western Humanities Review, The Southeast Review, Quarter After Eight, Square Lake, Jabberwock Review, Barrow Street, Pank, Night Train, Freight Stories, Avery Anthology; and she has fiction forthcoming in the Robert Olen Butler Prize Stories anthology and in The Ocean State Review, plus creative nonfiction forthcoming in Prime Mincer. Writers Mike Dorrell and Andy Farnsworth will read from their work on February 15th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Andrew Farnsworth is a PhD candidate in fiction and Vice-Presidential Fellow at the University of Utah. He was selected by Carole Maso for the 2010 Scowcroft prize in prose and his most recent work can be seen in Artifice Magazine. He lives in a small attic apartment on 3rd Avenue where he has learned to enjoy showering without standing. He has no pets. He has a fracture of the 3rd metacarpal in his right hand. He is looking forward to skiing again soon.. Mike Dorrell is best known as a playwright. His most recent plays include the upcoming TALKING WALES 2 for Utah Contemporary Theatre and a short play, THE IRRIGATION MURDER, as part of The Salt Lake Acting Company's WATER PROJECT in April. Last year, he took part in Plan- B Theatre Company's SLAM, wrote and acted in TALKING WALES for Utah Contemporary Theatre, and had a reading of a comedy, ART FOR ART'S SAKE at SLAC. He is the author of over a dozen plays for stage, radio, and television including PENNY GAFFS AND ANGEL PLACES, PICTURES OF THE FLOATING WORLD, CHANGE, THE CELTIC CROSS AND BURNING THE ARC for BBC Radio, EAST OF MAIN STREET for Avon Touring Company, and RISE OF THE OLD CLOUD for Paines Plough . Born in Swansea, Wales, Mike was educated at the Universities of London and Bristol and holds an M.A. in British and American Literature from The University of Utah. Currently, Mike is the Dramaturg for The Salt Lake Acting Company where his specialty is the development of new work. He has taught at Westminster College and The University of Utah. His poetry has been published in small magazines in Wales. Most featured readings are followed by an open reading. Poets Lisa Bickmore and Sandy Anderson will read from their work on February 8th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Lisa Bickmore's work has appeared in Mudfish, Quarterly West, Hunger Mountain Review, Tar River Poetry, Caketrain, and elsewhere. Her first book, Haste, was published by Signature Books. She teaches writing at Salt Lake Community College. Sandy Anderson has been published in Weber Studies, Eclectica, Stickman Review, Sugarhouse Review, Harpur Palate, Forge, and has work forthcoming in Ellipsis. Ghost Planet Press published her book At the Edge in White Robes in 1978, and her chapbook Jeanne Was Once a Player of Pianos, is available through Limberlost Press. Her poetry is included in the anthologies: New Poets of the American West, edited by Lowell Jaeger and Great and Peculiar Beauty edited by Terry Tempest Williams and Thomas Lyon. Her awards include the Salt Lake City Mayor's Award in Literature in 1997, and the Writers at Work Writing Advocate Award in 1995. She has been involved in the literary community since the 1960s, and is a founder of City Art. She has been artist in residence at several local high schools and given workshops to many different groups, including veterans and the disabled. She recently edited and published her fourth anthology of work by those with disabilities. She lives in Salt Lake City with her husband, two dogs and two guinea pigs. Paul Ketzle holds a Ph.D. in Fiction from theUniversity of Utah. He is the former managing editor of Western Humanities Review, where he has been a contributing editor. He teaches for the LEAP program and the English Department at the U. His fiction has appeared in Indiana Review and his nonfiction in Continuum, Utah Business Magazine and elsewhere. Susan Howe is a contributing editor of Tar River Poetry and served for eleven years as the poetry editor of Dialogue. Her own poems have appeared in such journals as The New Yorker, Poetry, The Southern Review, and Prairie Schooner. Her first collection of poetry, Stone Spirits, was published in 1997 and won the Charles Redd Center Publication Prize. It also received the Association for Mormon Letters award in poetry for 1998.
