I caught CV at Royce Hall last night and, while not as mindbending as his 1999 show (which I saw at the Anson Ford), it was still really quite something. Jacques Morelenboim is one of the few cello players I can see in a pop mujsic situation without wincing. Has anyone picked up his LIVE IN BAHIA? Was wondering what the band on that was, what the general style of it is, and if anyone's read his book yet. skip h NP: early andre williams stuff on fortune records

Don't think twice, grab it. The original album has never sounded better on disc, and the bonuses are compelling: The live take from Antibes sounds WAY better than any of the bootleg versions, and the outtakes, while not earth-shattering, are well worth hearing. After so many years of rumors about the "lost" sessions with Shepp, it might seem like a let-down to hear that they're no improvement on the original (like anything could be!). But they're fascinating all the same, with Shepp's gruff bark embroidering Trane's sanctified soulfulness. (I did catch myself for just a minute wondering if Pharoah Sanders might have been a more appropriate partner for this particular suite, as he was in 'Meditations,' but that's precisely why this is so damned valuable.) The two quartet outtakes are worthwhile as well, for some remarkable alternative views of by now completely familiar music. There is some momentary distortion and drop-out on the tapes for the augmented session; otherwise, everything here retains the sonic majesty you'd expect. And Jimmy Garrison's extended solo on the live version of "Pursuance" may just be his single most compelling performance. The boos at the end of the live performance come as a surprise, until you learn that the audience is just pissed that the band has nothing more to say, the transcendant concert is over. Once I finish the new Eggers novel, I'm planning on reading Ashley Kahn's new book on the making of 'A Love Supreme.' Some physics friends of mine asked me if there has been music based on quantum mechanics as there has been music based on all types of math and the such. Has there? Thanks. Zach
