Oh God, no. In my opinion this is the worst possible introduction. Like Patrice said, this project totally got out of Ikue's controll and she doesn't fit in at all. This is really straight drummachine rhytms. An exeptioanlly boring performance from her.

Totally agreed. A total failure considering who the signatories are.

Having said that, I generally think Ikue rules. Try the second Death Ambient CD on tzadik for a good intruduction.

Absolutely. I haven't checked the first one but "Synaesthesia" is one of my favorite Tzadik releases by far. A great mixture of ambient created with "real" instruments courtesy of Fred Frith's unorthodox techniques plus the electronic environment of Ms. Mori and lavish doses of tasteful noise. Don't miss it.

However, if you are a Ribot or Quine fan, "Painted Desert" is a must! Had it been Cyro Baptista or perhaps Joey Baron on percussion this would be one of the coolest albums of all time.

The guitars still sound boring to me, although Ribot is one of my faves. Not much substance in there by any involved parties! If I'm not wrong, nobody mentioned Mori's "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon" on Tzadik with a great ensemble: Friedlander, Anthony Coleman, Eyvind Kang, Kato Hideki, Makigami Koichi and Mori herself. Great performances, strong compositions, beautiful melodies, ambient-oriented soundscapes, noisier passages, some Japanese folk influence (I sense it, could be unexistant though),...
