A while back on this list there was a thread about DVDs we would like to see released, and a few mentioned Tarkovsky's "Solaris" and "Stalker". I found a place that sells the Ruscico versions of these discs, for $36 each (much cheaper than the $50 price tag at Kim's Underground): http://www.mhvf.net/forum/russian.shtml The website says the discs are Region 0 encoded. Apparently the Region 1 disc of Stalker is being released by Image in October for $50: "RusCiCo's Stalker DVD is set to be distributed in North America (R1/NTSC) exclusively by IMAGE Entertainment. The release date is October 15, 2002, and the price tag is USD 49.95." (http://www.acs.ucalgary.ca/~tstronds/nostalghia.com/TheNews.html) Criterion is currently preparing "Solaris" with a bunch of interviews and deleted scenes as extras. (No word on their website though) Just placed an order, so I don't have any details about reliability, service, etc. Peace, Ben _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

And if the Criterion "Solaris" is delayed, you can always catch the Steven Soderbergh-directed, James Cameron-produced, big-screen remake with George Clooney coming to a mall near you this fall! Whee! In a multiplex no one can hear you scream, Ben p.s. Ljova wrote earlier about the Apex multiregion DVD player. My Apex DVD player (a different model) was pretty dead in the water when I bought it, and lots of people (see the reviews on Amazon.com) have reported it too. Make sure the store you're buying it from has a good return policy... np: arthur lyman, "taboo" nr: samuel delany, "dhalgren" http://members.tripod.com/~tamad2/ ICQ: thewilyfilipino / Yahoo!: sunny70 --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. It's possibly my single favorite novel. Others loathe it. My suggestion: try to stick with it for at least a coupla hundred pages, and don't try too hard to puzzle out what's "really going on". One of these centuries, I'd *really* like to get to perform or record the opera I sketched of it. -- | josephzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt/ http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code Silence: the John Cage Discussion List |

.....or, if you're in New York (and why wouldn't you be? [don't answer that] ) you could see 35mm prints (some of them new!) at Lincoln Ctr at their Tarkovsky retrospective (http://www.filmlinc.com/wrt/programs/9-2002/tark/tark.htm) or, at Film Forum, you could see "Andrei Rublev" and "Solaris.", along with, ummmm, a documentary about Derrida (http://www.filmforum.com/comingsoon.html), the new Michael Snow, and Andy Goldsworthy. Randon film recommendation: Manoel de Oliveira's "I'm Going Home." Anyone want to share an apartment in Queens with me? Not even 1/100th of a percent joking.
