"Beat The Donkey is a very good CD, however, his CD on Avant, "Villa Lobos, Vira Loucos" is a little bit better starting off point. There are some very "commercial" soundonmg sections in "beat The Donkey" that make me think that there is a very strong tendency towards "slickness", if you understand where I am coming from there.. That being said, the first track has some very good surprises, and the playing is high-quality throughout. I've got the three Massacre albums but I wasn't really impressed by the Meltdown live recording. Maybe it was not about energy in that show, but I found it to be a bit "weak". I also tend not to be too excited about "Killing Time", to be honest, despite its classic status. My fave is "Funny Valentine" by far, although it's a total departure from their first album and comparisons are a bit stupid in this case. Thanks for all the Laswell recs so far. I'm adding most of them to my want-list, specially the numerous coincidences I've found in your recs. Even if my wallet doesn't agree, thanks again. I don't have much Laswell, but of the laswell I do have, I listen to Material 'Hallucination Engine' and Massacre 'Killing time' the most. 'Killing time' is great to my ears, as it sounds like some sort of avant garde minutemen album. Regarding 'Hallucination Engine', track 5 ("words of advice") sounds a heck of a lot like 'Red Baron' from Billy Cobham's 'Spectrum' album, but it is credited to "Laswell/Burroughs".... Given the similarity I would have expected Cobham to be credited... -whit

## I've never heard of this? I just looked at Turning Groove & found a bit more info on it. what's it like? I see none of the usual suspects are involved. (nb: see how Worrell is now playing with Jam Bands most of the time?, ie: Gov't Mule (GREAT band!), Phish, Claypool etc...) Andrew ##
