the ruins improv collaborations are some of my favorite listening material of the last year. I like their stuff with Bailey and Haino better than their own tightly composed stuff. Not that it's bad or anything, but the improv shit is totally insane. Especially 'Tohjinbo' w/Bailey and 'Knead' w/Haino. some of the best disjointed thrash-improv I've heard. --wrotemaw

Hi,
Where should I start with the Ruins? I know nothing of their oeuvre other than the one Dave Brubeck cover on "In His Own Sweet Way." I like it okay but it didn't compel me to go out and buy every one of their albums (as I'm wont to do when seized by a musician or group).

We'll be exchanging recs I think. First of all, I've been wanting to order that Brubeck tribute for a long time. Is it as good as it promises to be?
My Ruins fave is their "Live at Mandala" album on Tzadik. It's really impressive. I admit I have never listened to it in one sitting, because their sound can be really appaling, but they're real virtuosos in their style. They don't really sound like a duo and, even knowing that they are, I can't figure out how they're capable of such a mass of sound with just a bass and drums. If you want to listen to something different than their usual stuff, their album with Derek Bailey, "Saisoro" is also very good. It's a bunch of studio improvisations but this time everyone seems to go his own way (nothing strange for Bailey though).
I'm really looking forward to this new album on Ipecac.
Best,
Efrén del Valle

My personal favorite Ruins album is Refusal Fossil....it is an early release so the sound quality isn't great but I love the way it sounds. It was the album that got me into the ruins. It is so heavy and rough around the edges. They have an interesting live prog. rock medley on it. So amazing. I really enjoyed the Mahahavishnu medley on their new disc on Ipecac. Hearing Sasaki Hisashi play John Mclaughlin guitar lines on bass melts my soul. Saisoro is also excellent. XQuiQ
