hello all, was checking out this reviewhttp://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/a/area/revolution.shtml I really tend to want to pick up anything that this guy reviews, a nice departure from the mainstream of pitchfork writers. Can anyone second Area as essential to pick up? I am not a prog freak, but I do appreciate drawing on lots of music, I never listen to lyrics either. Just wondering if I should drop the 40+ bucks on this box set. thanks jay __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. While I can't remember anything about the Area CDs I've heard, the singer, Demetrio Stratos was scary-wonderful -- he makes Mike Patton sound limited and conservative. His solo albums were great, and the Area stuff might well be worth it if only for his work. (Grr, eager to listen to it again, and the discs are a few thousand miles away *sigh*) -- | jzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | GPG: A4224EFA http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code / VoiceWAVE Silence: the John Cage Discussion List |

The discs in the box are their definitive albums and all are equally good. Area were one of my favorite of the European prog bands, Having discovered them via an article written by Fred Frith in the late 70's. Demetrious Stratos, the singer, was a revelation, the man had an unbelievable vibrato that he often took way over the top.(These records will annoy the hell out of classically trained singers ;-) ). Unfortunatly, he passed away from leukemia in the early 80's. The instrumental playing is fast and furious and only rarely loses its focus, so yes, I'd reccomend them. Rich
Good article, thanks for the link. I have a couple of Area cd's and I'm very impressed with them. I think of them more in the RIO vein then straight prog or fusion, and they use a very eclectic mix of styles. The article doesn't mention that they also have a live album featuring Steve Lacy and Paul Lytton, which definitely makes them fodder for Zorn list fans. philz ==================================================================== Squidco The Squid's Ear http://www.squidco.com/ http://www.squidsear.com/ just in: Fred Frith - Prints; Dockstader/Reicher - Omniphony; Les Poules; Frith/Dermome/Tanguay/Boisen; Bob Ostertag; ==================================================================== On 1/30/03 11:14 AM, "jason tors" <jasontors@yahoo.com> wrote:

A friend lent me this set...wow! What music! Where can I find it for myself? It appears to be out of print. Even Gemm didn't have it! Zach

Are we still sure about this? I'd thought so, too, but it's not listed as "pending" on the website anymore. Oh... Well the way I figure it is that if they *said* they were going to, then they *will*, if only because there'd be such absolute hell to pay if they tried to backed out.
