Who cares if it is stealing??? DO IT!!
Steal. Go ahead. Who cares? Especially steal from Zorn. Everyone complains about the big labels but who has the higher prices? If I would have paid for even half of the Zorn cd's i have, i would have missed my rent and been living on the streets. I could buy almost any major label release for $5 less than any TZadik release. I even got my friends into him, and then they went out and bought his cd's. You know he didnt get the fans from mtv or the radio. Where's my advertisement fee? Then I pay money to go see him live and you never know what you are gonna get. When it's good, its great but he really fuckin sucks sometimes. Who knows, maybe the next time I goto one of his improvs and he sounds like a cheap imitation of himself, the best thing for me to do would be to start talking. His predictable outburst could wind up being the best part of the show. Just test him and see how far he can actually be pushed by a fan. Back to my original argument. I have been buying cd's (tapes/records) and going to concerts on a regular basis for almost 20 years now. I couldn't even begin to imagine how much money I have spent on music. I also have put out cd's before and know exactly how much things cost. All labels, big or small owe me. I am a loyal lifelong customer of all varieties of music dedicated to adding the best cd's I can to my collections. Some I pay for, some I dont. If I have a choice between a cd and a concert, the concert wins because I can burn the cd. Right now, there are ways for me to get great music for free. I don't care if I am right or wrong and I don't care if what I am doing is illegal. I am going to take as much as I can while the free music is still available. And I will especially take as much from Zorn as I can because his cd's are way too expensive for me too keep up with. Zorn products should start coming with money back guarantees. CONTEST: Who will make the most intelligent comments in response to this email?? Winner gets a burned copy of every single cd John Zorn ever played on. ($50,000 value)
Last time I checked $15 was right on par with most major label releases. It's even less than some of the $18.99 jobs out there. Where are you getting these $10 CDs because I would like to know about this wonderful place? Zach PS Do I win the contest?
1) I'm unclear why you're owed every Zorn release, particularly if you find his work wildly inconsistent. Tzadik stuff, while not especially cheap by indie label standards, is still reasonably priced - a store can make a handsome profit on a Tzadik CD sold for $17. Most major-label stuff is priced about the same, unless you're talking about budget-line CDs. 2) If you want predictable concerts, may I recommend an interest in bar bands, rather than experimental music. Experiments fail sometimes. If JZ sucks ass the next time I see him live, sure, I'll complain. I'll write a negative review. I might even get so bored I'll walk out. But I'm owed nothing, unless my negative review gets printed. 3) Back to the idea that you're owed something - I've spent most of my disposable income on records for the last 20 years, too, and I don't feel like I'm owed anything. I wish things were cheaper, and I think it's just silly for, say, "Fire of Love," by The Gun Club to be a full-priced CD in 2002. I love records, I love getting new ones, but they're an option, and if I won't be able to pay rent, hey, I'll pass up that Electric Masada CD. I've even had to sell a few records in order to eat - does this mean I'd be justified in shoplifting at Shangri-La the next time I'm in Memphis? Should I steal the next copy of "Flowers of Romance" I see, since I already bought one and sold it? Chris Selvig

Especially when the label claims the Gun Club "are not yet royalty-bearing", which means they haven't sold enough records to recoup the initial investment. What a crock -- if the sales were that low, would they have released it in a whole new format with modified artwork etc? Knowing that Ward Dotson (the slide guitar player on that record) is not seeing a dime from FIRE OF LOVE ( a classic) ain't seeing any dough from that record is enough to make me consider pirating a whole bunch. For a minute. sh
WEA's just keeping it in print out of their sense of respect for poor dead Jeffrey Lee. At 09:52 PM 12/2/2002 -0800, skip Heller wrote:

Don't know if it's the best possible version, but the issue of "Fire of Love" on the New Rose label shows up regularly in the cut-out bin at Camelot Music. Is it worth picking up?
