Willisau Jazz Festival (Zorn, Frith, Douglas)
Hi everyone, If anyone is in Switzerland from August 29 to September 1, you might want to check the Willisau Jazz Festival (www.jazzwillisau.ch): - Dave Douglas & Tiny Bell Trio (August 31, 14:30) - Aki Tarawase "Tribute to W.C. Handy": with Aki Tarawase, Fred Frith, Rudi Marshall, Nils Wogram, Paul Lovens (August 31, 20:00) - New New York Art Quartet: John Zorn, Milford Graves, Roswell Rudd, Reggie Worklan (September 1, 14:30) Unfortunatelly, I will only attend the Zorn concert but be sure I will give a review. Does anyone know what the New New York Art Quartet is (the hole program is in German :-( )? - Thierry
Thierry: The original NJAQ put out a classic disc under that name in 1964 for ESP-Disk featuring John Tchicai (alto saxophone); Roswell Rudd (trombone); Lewis Worell (bass); Milford Graves (percussion) and LeRoi Jones (recitation on one track). In 1999 the rerformed band did a 35th Reunion album for DIW with Rudd, Tchicai on tenor saxophone, bassist reggie Workman, Graves and Jones now known as Amiri Baraka reciting on more tracks. His contributions ruined most of the disc IMHO since his poetry that day was substandard and childish and certainly not as impressive as what I've seen him do live in NYC. I suppose the band is called the NNYAQ because Zorn is trying to fill Tchicai's shoes. Considering JT is about six foot four that may be a problem... Ken, thanks a lot for the explanations. At least I will know a little bit more when going there (I just thought it was another Zorn band and not something that "old"!). Let's hope it will be interesting ;-) - Thierry Ken Waxman wrote:
