Unofficial Wire Audio Companion (again)
Me again - The Unofficial Wire Audio Companion (http://thewire.kargatron.net/) got a mention in the Aug 2002 issue of The Wire, in the Go To: column by Peter Shapiro, p. 81. The subject was file-sharing, and analyzing past and present sharing utilities. In that context, the relevant write-up: But there is hope still. Wire reader Vincent Kargatis, helped by individual MP3 posters, has resourcefully created _The Unofficial Wire Audio Companion_ (thewire.kargatron.net). Still a young site, the Audio Companion holds promise to be a one stop shop for Wire related music. By *pointing to* the MP3s instead of actually hosting them, this can't be shut down by anyone. Genius. The top accompanying image is from the site, even. So, that's cool, but I'm writing to ask for more help in providing or finding sources. So far, the bulk of (hosted) entries are mine (though I'm not forgetting those that have contributed - thank you!), and the site is just not living up to its potential, imo. Perhaps one way any Wire reader can help is being overlooked, and it takes no resources but time: find already extant audio files or streams corresponding to reviewed music. Primary sources include label or artist web sites, but there are other useful sources, like epitonic.com and online stores like aquariusrecords.org, etc. These entries are just as useful a music review supplement as individually-hosted mp3s. (Though I'd suggest not bothering with 30-60 second snippets, in general.) So if you want to help and see the resource grow, why not pick a favorite artist or label(s) - when you see something reviewed in The Wire, take a look online, see if you can find any relevant sources, and in the process act as advocate for them? Supported by only a few people, the Companion will at best be modestly useful - with the help of 20, 30, or more (a real community project), it could be a huge resource. And, of course, if you have relevant mp3s you want to host, that's great too. Am I groveling? Yes, but imo the idea is bigger than my own ability to support it, and I think with modest help by many individuals, it could rock.
