a few months ago, i heard a recording of a one man live show with Hkon Kornstad where he did drones with his Saxophone. it was quite astonishing!! he's never done it on record however. so, i'm wondering if anybody on the list can tell me if there's been Saxophone players doing stuff like that before? it made me think that the instrument is excellent for creating drones.
The guy for saxophone drones is, of course, La Monte Young... if he ever gets around to actually letting any of us hear the rumoured tons of tape that he has of his early work.
Oh yeah, there's some sax work on those LaMonte "Dreamwerks" CDs that came out a few months back, but getting yr hands on those requires extreme Ninja record collecting tactics. At 09:30 PM 10/16/2003, Joseph Zitt wrote:

All of his sax playing that I've heard has him playing very fast over drones, but not playing drones. I'll try to remember to ask next time I see him. The opening movement of Terry Riley's Chanting the Light of Foresight, The Tuning Path has the Rova Saxophone Qt. playing a drone for 17 min. Tuba player Tom Heasley makes some nice drones by placing a mike on the bell of his horn and playing into an echo. -- * David Beardsley * microtonal guitar * http://biink.com/db

Ah, right. The drones I've heard him do on official recordings are vocal and electronic. Maybe one day he'll release some of the early work so we can hear for sure, rather than having to rely on hearsay and shaky memory.
