He invents his own musical rules, and his unusual collages and sound combinations often serve to explain postmodernism. But who is John Zorn? What does he think, how does he work? Zorn followed his ideas from the beginning without compromise. And these ideas are based on something deeper and more intense than just sounds, or musical terms. He created his own world, full of fascinating and also radical ideas. More than a decade ago filmmaker Claudia Heuermann heard about that world, and listened to this music, which would change her life completely. A BOOKSHELF ON TOP OF THE SKY begins exactly at that moment. The 12 episodes of the film do not only portray John Zorn. They also tell the story of a meeting between cinema and music, in which the director appropriates the aesthetic qualities of the composer to liberate herself from all restraints.
