I just got done reading this, Caetano Veloso's autobio/history of troplicalia/overview of Brazillian culture and politics, and was wondering if anyone else has read it. Personally, I love his records dearly, but the book doesn't make me much like him personally. He comes off as something of a coffeehouse intellectual chowderhead in spots, a dilletante in others, and -- at his best -- somebody who really loves the music of his country. skip h NP: the raymond scott orchestrette, PUSHBUTTON PARFAIT

Just started it, so I'm only as far as Maria Bethania's nascent career, but it's pretty enjoyable so far... It certainly fills in some holes in my (admittedly patchy) knowlege of Brazilian music, anyway. OTOH, I bought the _Prenda Minha_ DVD at the same time as _Tropical Truth_, but couldn't get through the live performance due to the horribly dated (and cheesey) '70s-rockshow camerawork - all that jiggling and bad zoom rubbish is a total buzzkill... Too true. But what a fantastic performance by that group. I saw them around that time here in LA, and it kicked my ass and made me cry. sh
skip's a fast reader! i just barely started my copy of it. on a related note, though, i was wondering if anyone read the os mutantes autobiography "the psychadelic adventures of a band from brazil" (the exact title escapes my mind). i've been attempting to get a copy of that for some time but i can't find it anywhere... and i've looked hard. is it worth the effort? thanks, __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
