RE: Ikue Mori - always the same?
she has? that's horrific to know.
ikue mori never sounds the same... but she's probably tired of lugging all those samplers and pedals around.
Mori's been using MAX/MSP on a laptop for years. Does anyone else think that Mori's whole shtick works great on paper, but not in practice? I mean, the idea of using drum machines to make music was great, but instead of using analogue drum synthizers, with their wealth of tonal possibilities, she always used those really horrible, gated-reverb 80's sounding digital drum boxes. andrew
Watching an artist "play" laptop can be monotonous, but it can be engaging, too. The basis of Andrea Parkins's rig is a lap top and she is a very engaging artist to watch. Though granted she has keyboard midi controllers and substantial outboard gear, but the heart is the computer. I think it is left to the artist what she wants to do with the computer as performance instrument; it is up to the artist whether the computer is dull or not. Zach

if i may, i don't think the heart is the computer at all. andrea parkins is a great musician who is reliably interesting, and THAT is what's at the heart if her set-up. skip h np: james blood ulmer -- are you glad to be in america
Of course, bad choice of words. You said what I was trying to get at. I meant the computer is the core of her rig, but not the heart of her music. The computer is just an instrument... -----Original Message----- From: skip heller [mailto:thisparadise@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Thursday, April 29, 2004 3:49 PM To: Zachary Steiner; 'ahorton' Cc: 'zorn-list' Subject: Re: Ikue Mori - always the same? on 4/29/04 1:43 PM, Zachary Steiner at zsteiner@butler.edu wrote:

Andrea told me during a small chat I had with her after a parkins/black/eskaellin show some 3 years ago that she used her laptop as efffect proccesor. That's not the same as using it as the main source of sounds. marcin g

guess this just depends on what your expectations are. leave them at the door and it doesn't really matter what the 'shtick' looks like on paper. matt http://craque.net

## first time hearing "Death Ambient" first thing that popped into my head was "Seinfeld". mainly due to the "pah" & and "lip-pop" voice synth/sample ... Andrew ##
