I second, third and 4th any recommendation here for Muddy Waters and Hound Dog Taylor. For the former, I'd recommend HIS BEST 1947-1955 as a good intro and DELUXE EDITION as a good intro for the later. Howlin' Wolf is amazing too. The CD that collects HOWLIN' WOLF (aka the Rocking Chair album) and MOANIN' IN THE MOONLIGHT is a classic. Speaking of Wolf, his guitarist Hubert Sumlin is an incredible player. He's having a benefit show this Wednesday at BB King's. Vernon Reid, Marc Ribot are on the bill too so it should be a good show. See <http://bbkingblues.com/schedule/moreinfo.cgi?id=796> for details. Pretty much any Muddy record up to about 1958 is all that. Wolf's 50s stuff for Sun & Chess is completely essential and should be owned in its entirety by anyone who really loves music. That live Hound Dog Taylor record with "Give Me Back My Wig" is also as good as it gets. Also: pretty much anything by Little Walter up through the early 60s Frankie Sims on Specialty (with "Lucy Mae Blues") Guitar Slim on Specialty Lonesome Sundown on Excello Lightnin' Slim on Excello Billy the Kid Emerson on Sun Bobby Blue Bland on Duke Johnny Guitar Watson on Modern/RPM T-Bone Walker on Capitol and Black & White Gatemouth Brown on Peacock damn near anything by Lightnin' Hopkins John Lee Hooker on VJ Jimmy Reed on VJ Junior Parker on Sun any early Ike Turner skip h

Agreed. I think someone mentioned the Wolf and Muddy box sets on Chess and if you're a fan, you need both of those.

BEWARE OF THE DOG is indeed a classic. Good call. I forgot about Sonny Boy Williamson (the second one)- that was some raw, primal stuff! Also, Son Seals early stuff on Alligator is quality material indeed. Heard James Blood Ulmer's recent blues project with Vernon Reid? I saw them a few months ago (at Irridium) and they tore it up something fierce. "Unsatisfied" is one of the perfect Chess records.

The album was great, but that version of the group never made it to LA. sh

I think Proper (or JSP) has a great cheap box set on Wynonie, and really good ones on Sister Rosetta Tharpe (who is excrutiatingly amazing) and Amos Milburn. sh

JUST STOMPIN' The Forever Bad Blues Band Live at the Kitchen
I should have thought of that one. It's out of print, with no plans of re-issue - afaik. Later performances were even more amazing. * David Beardsley * http://biink.com

Is there anyone out there that has any experience and expertise with MIDI? I have a question I need to refer to some one of experience, but I won't bore the list with the long question. Please contact me off list. Thanks, Zach
