Of course they are not intrinsically evil. Is anything? Of course possible to run an ethical business of that size without inevitable corruption. But are they?

So if you were to destroy them, how might you create something that would serve their function without falling victim to this corruption? -- | jzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | GPG: A4224EFA http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code / VoiceWAVE Silence: the John Cage Discussion List |
I think that its not that big businesses are "evil" or corrupt. Its simply that they become an organism with an agenda of its own - making money. "It" does anything it can to maximise the amount of money it makes - and like the view we are taking on copying cd's "it" re-rationalises its standpoint on the law to suit itself. Its easy to think of big companies as a being run by a big man in a suit in a board room but really what you have are lots of people "just doing their job". Decisions are made all over the place and no one person makes "evil" decisions but they all work to the end goal. I have had dealings with BP recently and the shear scale and power of this essentially faceless money making machine is truly terrifying (and quite awesome in the truest sense of the word). Most people doing BP's "will" don't even work for BP directly. The mainstream music industry is largely like this to. It has a resource (music) and is doing whatever it can to make money from this - manipulating "artists" and its audience to sell as much product as possible. There is another music industry still kicking around - that's the one the big one grew out of. An industry of mucisians and people who like music trying to sell their honest work to people who want to hear it (when did you last hear a britney fan raving about her actual music - they all breathlessly say things like -"Oh she's so cool - such a role model" etc.) This industry has very different needs from the big one. I personally feel that the two industries - big and small, should be separate. Let the majors sell Product to teenagers (and younger) and let the small guys have separate channels to sell real music to real people. Ok no ones going to get real rich that then they weren't doing anyway where they? cheers mark
