i was just thinking how absurd this arguement about les claypool sounding identifiable in every project he's done. i mean what the hell is wrong with that? nobody has ever said something like "im so sick of that elvis guy, i can always tell it's him." or "boy sinatra has really stagnated lately, he sounds the same on all his songs.." etc. you get the point. just being foolish i guess. sorry. -mike

Actually one of my coworkers was grumbling about why we bother to stock more than one Sinatra album, since there's no difference between them. On the one hand, that probably means that the guy could benefit from a silent retreat to refresh his ears, but on the other hand it knocks out the "nobody" from that statement. I heard a Sinatra album a few weeks back that I couldn't identify until I asked the guy playing it. It sounded quite different from what I expected. Unfortunately I've now forgotten what it was, and will have to ask again. -- | jzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | GPG: A4224EFA http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code / VoiceWAVE Silence: the John Cage Discussion List |

It wasn't actually the argument, at least from my end. I wasn't questioning Claypool as a player, but his ideas, which are very much the same on every album he releases. On the other hand, when he collaborates with Tom Waits, for instance, he loses that personal sound of his, which doesn't make sense to me. Why should I call him to play in one of my albums if he performs like anyone else? Those were the arguments. Oh, btw, I've never been really impressed by that fast slapping techinque...
